STEEL DERRICK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1916.
' Application filed April 5, 1916. Serial No. 89,149.
To all wkpm'z't may concern:
Be it known that we, Jnssn F. HILLIARD :"and FAYETTE JoNns, citizens of the United States, residing at Aiken, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steel Derricks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction or derrick and has for its primary object to provide means for more effectively bracing the different elements and substantially supporting the pulleys.
An object of the invention is the substantial manner of securing together the upper ends of the uprights aiid 'supporting a plutality of pulleys. H
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists. in construction, com-' bination and armrrgemeht of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a side eleva tion of the derrick.
" Fig. 3 is a detail enlarged elevation of the upper portion of the derrick. Fig. 4: is an enlarged side elevation of the upper portion of the derrick. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the bearing supports.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a plurality of uprights of any suitable cross sectional formation depend ing entirely upon the service required of the derrick. These uprights 1 are rigidly connected together by means of the transversely arranged braces 2 and angularly.ar ranged struts 3, the latter being connected in pairs at an intermediate point by means of the clips 4:. The uprights are mounted upon any suitable form of base such as illus trated at 5. The uprights converge toward each other in an upward direction so that the upper end portions 6 are disposed in close proximity to each other. In this par ticular instance the uprights are made of tubular material and seated in the upper end Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View on the line 22 of'Fig. 1.
of the uprights is the extension 7 of a bearing support 8. This support is recessed as illustrated at 10 and snugly fitting the recess is the extension 11 formed integral with the bearing 12; This bearing 12 is formed with a depression 13 in which rotates one end of an axle 14 that carries a pulley 15. Passing through both the bearing and the support are the parallel limbs of a U bolt 16 that passes over the axle and holds the same seated in the depression. Arranged directly below the pulley 15 and contacting with the adjacent surfaces'ofthe uprights is a block 17 through which and the uprights pass bolts 18 vertically spaced from each other. For exposing the center portion of the lowermost bolt we cut away a. portion of the block as illustrated at 19 and connected to the exposed portion of the bolt is a second pulley 20.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it should be apparent that we provide a de vice which is admirably adapted for the purpose for which it is intended, that the device is simple, durable, and eliicient of construc tion and that the device may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
WVhat we claim is:
l. A derrick comprising hollow uprights, supports having extensions detachably mounted in the uprights, bearings detachably mounted in the supports, a pulley mounted in the bearings, and a pulley supporting block mounted between the uprights directly below said first pulley.
2. A derrick comprising hollow uprights, supports detachably mounted upon the upper ends of said uprights, bearing blocks seated within said supports, a pulley including an axle mounted on the bearing blocks,
and U bolts passing around the axle of the pulley and through said blocks and supports.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures. 1
JESSE F. HILLIARD. FAYETTE JONES.
