GATE-OPERATING MEANS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN H. Gnovn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moorcroft, in the county of Crook and State of \Vyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Operating Means; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description by it may be operated as approached and passed, so that a person whether in a vehicle or on foot, on approaching the gate may readily cause the same to open, and after having passed the gate may then readily close the same.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the gate and operating devices therefor, the gate being shown closed and its operating devices being constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail plan of one of the catches. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, of the means to secure the operating lever. Fig. 4 is a detail elevation, partly in section, of the inner portion of the gate and associated parts. Fig. 5 is a detail elevation at right angles to Fig. 1, and showing the gate opened. Fig. 6 is a detail elevation, from the inner side, of the post against which the gate closes, and showing the latching devices. Fig. '7 is a detail horizontal sectional view of the same.
The post to which the gate is hung is indicated at 1 and the post against which the gate closes is indicated at 2. Standard posts 3 are spaced from opposite sides of the post 1, and are on the same side of the road or driveway as said post 1 and their upper ends are connected to said post 1 by lines 4 of wire, rope, or the like.
The gate 5, which may be of the construction here shown, or of any other suitable construction, is provided at its inner end with tubular hinge members 6, which are pivotally mounted and are also adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.

slide vertically on a pivot rod 7, which is spaced from the inner side of the post 1 and is connected thereto at its'lower and upper ends, as at 89. A bent supporting arm 10 is provided which may be fitted at its upper; end in any one of a series of adjusting openings 11 in the inner side of the post 1, the lower end of the said supporting arm having an eye 12 through which the pivot or hinged vertical bar 7 passes, said supporting arm hence serving to support the gate at any desired vertical adjustment. This enables the gate to be raised or lowered, as desired, so that it may be set to swing over'snow or to permit the passage of small animals under it when closed.
The post 2 against which the gate closes is provided on its inner side with a pair of vertically arranged latch plates or devices 12, which are arranged in spaced relation and are cross sectionally angular so that each, latch plate has an oblique web or flange 13, which projects into the path of the gate latch bar 1'-1 and also has an outwardly extending web 15, which is pivotally connected to the post 2, as at 16. Each latch plate has a slot l7. The post 2, is provided with bolts 18 which pass through said slots 17 so that the heads of said bolts serve as stops to limit the outward movement of said latch plates. Springs 19 are provided to move the latch plates outwardly and normally hold them in the path of the latch bar 14, said springs being here shown as coil springs and arranged on said bolts and between the latch plates and the post 2.
The latch bar, 1 1 is arranged for sliding movement in guides 20, one of which is on the vertical outer bar 21 of the gate, another guide being on a vertical bar 22 with which the gate is provided. The inner end of the latch-bar is connected by a link rod 22 to an operating bar 23, which has its lower end pivotally mounted, as at 24, on one side of the gate near the inner or hinged end of the gate. This operating bar 23 passes upwardly through a guide 25 on one side of the upper gate bar and said operating bar extends upwardly above the gate to a suitable height. A spring 26 is provided which has one end connected to the operating bar, as at 27, and the other'end connected to the top bar of the gate, as at 28, the function of this spring being to normally move the upper end of the operating bar 23 outwardly to cause said bar to normally hold the latch bolt 14 in locking position. A spring 14* may be also employed on the latch bolt 14L to normally hold the latter in locking position, said spring coacting with the spring 26. Hence, when the gate is swung from either side to the post 2 its latching bar strikes the flange 13 of one of the latching plates and turns said latch plate on its pivot 16 against the tension of the spring 19 so that said latch plate permits the latch bar to pass, and as the latch bar gets into the space between the latch plates, the latch plate which has just been passed by the latch bar is restored by its spring 19 to normal position, so that the gate is secured in closed position.
On the inner side of the post 1 at a suitable height from the ground is a cross arm 29, which extends in opposite directions therefrom and parallel with the roadway, and which is provided at its ends with catches 30, which ordinarily overhang the roadway, the said catches beingprovided on their opposing sides with curved cam faces or edges 31 and with recesses 32. These catches are arranged in the path of the bar so that when the gate is opened in either direction the bar 23 strikes one of the cam faces or edges 31 and is moved inwardly against the tension of its spring 26, until it reaches the recess 32, the said spring then acting to engage the bar 23 with said recess 32 of the catch, thus securing the gate in opened position.
To enable the gate to be operated from either side it is here shown as provided on each side with an opening cord 33 and a closing cord 34. These cords are respec tively suspended from the lines 4 by pulleys 35, 36 and are respectively provided with depending handles 3738. The opening cords are directly attached at their inner ends to the bar 23, as at 39, the closing cords engaging direction elements 40 on the cross arm 29 and are attached to the eyes of a double eye bolt 41 with which the operating oar 23 is provided. from coming in contact with the hinge or pivot rod 7 of the gate I provide a fender a2, which is secured to the inner side of the post 1. It will be understood that after having passed through the open gate the operator by pulling an appropriate cord Willtd cause the bar 23 to first disengage the catch and will then cause the gate to swing back to closed position. Any suitable operating cords or means may, within the scope of my invention, be employed for actuating the bar 23 and for opening and closing the gate.
hat I claim is:
1. In combination with a swinging gate having a longitudinally movable latch bar; an operating bar pivotally mounted on the gate, and extending upwardly therefrom, and connected to said latch bar to operate the latter: a spring engaging the operating bar normally holding the latch bar in locking position; catches at the sides of the gate to engage the operating bar when the gate is opened in either direction, and means to actuate said operating bar.
2. In combination with a swinging gate having a longitudinally movable latch bar; an operating bar pivotally mounted on the gate extending upwardly therefrom, and connected to said latch bar to operate the latter; a spring engaging the operating bar normally holding the latch bar in locking position; catches at the sides of the gate to engage the operating bar when the gate is opened in either direction; and means to actuate said operating bar and comprising operating cords extending from opposite sides of the gateway.
