Description

J. CHISHOLM.
TOOL HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED APR-4,1916.
Patented Aug. 15, 1916.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE' JAMES CHISHOLM, OF LYONS, COLORADO.
TO OIL-HOLDER.
Application filed Apri14, 1916.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES Cinsiromr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyons, in the county of Boulder, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in tool holders, and particularly to tool holders for use on lathes, planers, shapers, etc.
One object of the invention is to provide a novel and simple device of this character in which the tool can be properly adjusted to different vertical and lateral angles or completely removed from the tool post, without danger of the post becoming dis engaged from the supporting arm.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is 'an elevation of my improved tool holder; Fig. 2 is an end view of the same; Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section on the line of Fig. 2.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the arm of the tool holder which is adapted to be properly secured in the post of the tool rest which latter is not shown. One end of the arm 10 is cut away as shown at 11 and enlarged to form a circular head 12 in a plane at right angles to the arm 11. The upper face of the head is formed with a flat face 13 for the reception of a plane-concave washer 14. In the center of the head and formed vertically therethrough is an opening 15 through which is inserted, from the bottom of the head, the tool post 16. The tool post has a flanged head 17, the lower end of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1916.
Serial No. 88,886.
and secured therewithin a pin 24, the lower end being formed with a head 25 extending beneath the flanged head 17 to support the tool post against dropping downwardly through the opening 15, while at the same time permitting the post to be turned in the head. Thus it is a simple matter to take the tool holder from the tool rest to remove or adjust the cutter 20, without any danger of the post dropping downwardly through the opening of the head.
What is claimed is:
A tool holder comprising an arm having a horizontally disposed and circular head on one end, a tool post disposed vertically through and rotatable in the head, said post having a flanged head on the lower end which is countersunk into the lower face of the first-named head, an opening being formed vertically in the first-named head, and a pin secured in said opening and having a head extending beneath the head of the post whereby the post is prevented from downward movement while at the same time it is permitted free rotary movement within the head of the holder.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES CHISHOLM.
