To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that T, JACOB E. NEAHR, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Match-Igniting Devices, of which the following isa specification.

This invention relates principally to a combined match-safe and match-igniter, and it is especially adapted for pocket use, although certain features may be used in either match-safes or match-igniters considered separately, and whether adapted for pocket use or not.

One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and durable structure, sufficiently compact to be adapted for pocket use, and containing safely a supply of matches and means for igniting them.

The invention, which may be carried out in a variety of ways, is illustrated, by way of example, in the form of a tube closed at both ends; pressure upon one of the ends serving to cause the protrusion, from the other end of the tube, of a match-igniter, followed by a match-box, so that a match may readily be withdrawn from the box and ignited; whereupon the box and igniter may be pressed back telescopically into the tube, closing the same; both the matches and the ignitcr being protected against injury, while the pocket of the user does not `come in con.

The. match-box lits telescopically within the tube or casing, and carries upon its upper end the match-igniter, which is preferably in the form of an ignition-strip wound upon a drum. The drum is secured upon A the top of the match-box, which thus serves as a means whereby the igniter is supported upon the casing, which latter serves as a convenient handle by which to hold the device when striking a` match. The ignition- .strip is coiled within the drum, and paid out and applied upon the periphery of the drum as required; the ends of the applied portion of the strip being clipped to the drum. The clip may be readily opened to release the strip, and then closed after adjustment of the strip; the drum and the clip in its closed condition being adapted to slip within the casing or tube. The match-box has an open side. the opening being of such form that the mere tipping of the device will cause the matches to hang out of the box but without likelihood of dropping therefrom, so that it is very easy to select a match and withdraw it, and there is no need to insert the fingers in the box for the purpose of securing a match, and hence the box may be quite small, as is desired for pocket use.

Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective of the cover of the ignitionstrip drum, the cover being removable to give access to the interior. This cover moreover normally closes one end of the main casing or tube. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the open-sided match-box, withdrawn from the casing and showing the ignitionstrip drum mounted thereon. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the casing, which may be a simple open-ended tube. Fig. 4 is a central sectional elevation of the device in closed condition, and illustrating the manner of opening the same by pressing the finger upon one end thereof. Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective to illustrate the manner of clipping the ends of the applied portion of the ignition-strip upon the drum. Fig. 6 is a plan of the parts seen at Fig. Q Fig. 7 is a plan to illustrate the method of adjusting the ignition-strip upon the drum. Fig. S shows in enlarged section the upper portion of the device in closed condition. Fig. 9 illustrates the device opened up and tipped to cause the matches to hang out therefrom for accessibility. Fig. 10 shows in perspective separately the parts that make up the Fig. 2 structure.

The matches l are contained in a box 2, which telescopes within a tubular holder 3 serving as a handle; the bottom @L of the box serving to close the lower end of the tube, and also serving as a finger-piece whereby to push the box out from the other end of the tube. rIhe latter is preferably lined with paper or suitable material 5, which aids in frictionally holding the casing and box in different relative positions, and also tends to keep the box clean and bright. Y

The side of the box is open at 6, for insertion and withdrawal of mat-ches; the open- V ing being preferably in the form of an elongated V-shape out, terminating at its small end between the top and bottom of the box. By tipping the box as at Fig. 9, the matches are caused to hang out of the opening, where they areV readily accessible and can CIK easily be withdrawn one by one, without likelihood of any match falling out of the box. The V-shape cut terminates so far above the bottom of the box, that the matches are supported between their ends, so as not to fall out at Fig. 9. The cut 6, however, may be of other form, so long as it terminates at a suiiicient height for this purpose. The top and bottom of the box may be near enough to each other to confine the matches against liability of jumping out of the opening (3.

lhe match-igniter, c; rried upon the upper end ot' the match-box 2, comprises a drum 7, to contain a coil ot' match-ignition strip 8, one end whereof is pulled out through an eye 9 in the wall ot the drum and applied to the periphery of the. drum by winding thereon, as at 10. The ends of the applied portion of the strip are secured by a clip 11, projecting up from an arm l2, pivoted at 18 to the drum bottom. The clip may have converging sides to be wsprung between the edges of the eye 9, to hold the strip securely at said eye; and the arm l2 may be pressed firmly against the bottom of the drum, to make sufficient friction to hold the clip securely in strip-clamping or closed position. Normally the clip must be closed as at Fig. 6, in order to permit the match-igniter to slip into the casing 3; the arm when open forming an obstruction to the closing of the ignition device into the tube, since at that time the arm projects beyond the contour of the casing, as at Fig. 7. The drum, although made ot such diminutive proportions as to slip within a casing 3 of say three-fourths of an inch in diameter, is still of ample size to serve the purpose, and also may accommodate a coil orp sufficient length to last for months or years with ordinary usage.

The coil may surround a central stud (or core) 1l, rising from the bottom of the drum; and the drum may be covered by a disk 15, having a threaded shank 1G to screw into said stud; said disk normally serving to close the upper end of the casing, Figs. el, 8.

The means whereby the drum is supported upon the match-box 2, may comprise a disk 17 whereby the box is headed, and to which the bottom of the drum is secured by a rivet 18. The circular edge of the box may fit into a rabbet 19 cut on the lower edge of the disk. The clip arm 11 may work in a recess or seat 2O eut in the upper face of the heading disk 17. The latter may have a circular brim or iiange 21 within which the drum fits; said iiange 21 serving as a bottom iiange for the drum, and cooperating with the top flange of the drum (consisting of the overhanging edge of the cover 15) to confine the ignition strip against lateral displacement.

The outward movement ot the match-box from the tube or casing may be limited by an interior stop 22, which will engage (Fig. 9) the bottom of the V-shape notch in the box for this purpose. Said stop may also serve to limit the closing movement of the device, by engaging (Fig. 8) with the under Side of the cover 15 of the strip drum. Upon removing the cover, the box may be thrust out of the bottom of the casing and withdrawn, the bottom ot' the flange 21 being cut away at 23 to atlord a clearance for the stop 22 when the box and drum are to be taken out of the casing.

Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

l. A match-safe comprising a match-ignition device comprising a coil, and a casing to contain said match-ignition device and the matches; said match-ignition device mounted for a movement to expose the same ior striking a match thereon; means being connected with said match-ignition device to be eiiective at the movement thereof, for rendering the incased matches accessible when the match-ignition device is exposed, and inaccessible when the match-ignition device is returned within the casing.

2. The combination ot an incasing structure within which matches may be inaccessibly coniined; a match-ignition device comprising a coil normally inaccessible in said incasing structure; and means supporting said match-ignition device upon said incasing structure in a manner to permit movement of the match-ignition device away from the incasing structure and simultaneously cause the matches in the incasing structure to be rendered accessible.

3. A combined match-safe and ignitiondevice, comprising a drum or magazine portion upon which an ignition-strip is applied and within which the strip is stored, and a match-containing handle portion forniing a casing wit-hin which said drum with its strip is contined; means movable relatively to said casing being provided for rendering the matches accessible and for exposing the ignition strip to permit the striking of a match thereon.

t. A combined match-safe and ignitiondevice, comprising a drum or magazine upon which an ignition-strip is applied and within which the strip is stored, a match-holding box, a easing structure, and means connect ing said drum and said match-holding box for simultaneous movement relatively to said casing structure, to render the matches accessible and expose the drum and ignitionstrip to permit striking a match thereon.

5. The combination of an open-ended tube or casing; an open-sided match-box having a bottom and fitting in said casing, said bottom closing the lower' end of said tube and affording means for thrusting the box at will out from the top of the tube; and a magazine or drum mounted upon the upper end of said match-box within said tube, and comprising a portion which closes the upper end ot' said tube; a strip of match-igniting material being applied upon said drum.

6. The combination ot' an open-ended tube or casing; an open sided matchbox having a bottom and iitting in said casing, said bottom closing the lower end of said tube and affording means for thrusting the box at will out from the top or' the tube; a magazine or drum mounted upon the upper end of said match-box within said tube, and comprising a portion which closes the upper end of said tube; a strip of match-igniting material being applied upon said drum, and extending within the drum; and means releasably securing the applied strip upon the exterior of the drum.

7. The combination of an open-ended tube or casing; an open-sided match-box having a bottom and fitting in'said casing, said bottom closing the lower end of said tube and affording means for thrusting the box at will out from the top of the tube; a magazine or drum mounted upon the upper end of said match-box within said tube, and comprising a portion which closes the upper end of said tube; a strip of match-igniting material being applied upon said drum; and means to prevent the box from being extruded from the bottom of the tube.

8. A pocket ignition-device, comprising a magazine or drum portion upon which an ignition-strip is applied and within which the strip is coiled, and a handle portion within which said drum and strip are inca-sed; said drum with the strip being movable out of the handle portion, to expose the applied portion of the strip for striking a match thereon.

9. A pocket-safe comprising a handle poi'- tion, and a match-ignition device comprising a coil oi match-ignition strip incased within said handle portion and mounted for a movement to expose the same for striking a match thereon; said match-ignition device comprising a. support for the coil of matchignition strip.

10. A pocket ignition-device, comprising a casing, and a magazine or drum within said casing; a coil of match-ignition strip being partly wound upon said drum, and the latter being mounted for movement out of the casing to expose the strip for striking a match thereon; means being provided for affording a support or connection to retain the drum upon the casing when the drum is moved to strip-exposing position.

11. A pocket ignition-device, comprising a tubular casing; a magazine or drum Within said casing; a coil of match-igniting strip being partly wound upon said drum; the drum mounted for a movement of protrusion from the casing; the strip extending Within the drum, and the latter having an eye through which the strip may be withdrawn from the drum; and a clip mounted on the drum to clip the strip to the drum at said eye; said clip when open forming an obstruction to the return of the drum within the casing, but being mounted to told to the drum to permit the latter to be returned within the casing.

12. A pocket ignitiondevice, comprising a magazine or drum to the circmnlierence of which an ignition-strip is applied,- a portion of the strip extending within the drum; a casing -i`or normally confining said drum with its applied strip; and means whereby said drum is supported upon said casingl to permit the movement of the drum out ot the casing in a manner to expose theV strip for the entire circumference of the drum.

13. A pocket ignition-device, comprising al magazine or drum portion upon which an ignition-strip is applied and within which the strip is coiled, a handle portion within which said drum and strip are incased; said drum with the strip being movable out of the handle portion, to expose the applied portion of the strip for striking a match thereon, and a match-containing box con` iined within said handle portion and movable with said drum out or" said handle portion.

A pocket ignition-device, comprising a magazine or drum portion upon which an ignition-strip is applied and within which the stripis coiled, a handle portion within which said drum and strip are inca-sed; said drum with the strip being movable out of the handle portion, to expose the applied portion of the strip for striking a match thereon, and a match-containing box co-nined within said handle portion and movable with said drum out of said handle portion; said box forming means, whereby the exposed drum is supported upon said handle portion 15. A pocket ignition-device, comprising a magazine or drum portion upon which an ignition-strip is applied and within which the strip is coiled, a handle portion within which said drum and str'p are incased', said drum with the strip beL movable out ot the handle portion, to expose the applied portion of the strip for striking a match thereon, and a match-containing box confined within said handle portion and movable with said drum out of said handle portion; said box forming means, whereby the exposed drum is supported upon said handle portion, and having a bottom normally closing the casing and serving as a finger-piece for thrusting the drum out of the casing.

16. The combination with a coil of ignition-strip, and an ignition-strip-containing drum or magazine upon which a portion of the strip is releasably applied; of a matchcontaining box connected to said drum, and means normally constituting a safe for said drum and box but capable of movement relatively to the drum and box to render the matches accessible and expose the strip for striking a match thereon.

A pocket-safe comprising a handle portion; a match-ignition device comprising a coil of match-ignition strip ineased within said handle portion; and a support for said match-ignition device; said support telescoped within said handle portion and mo 'able to expose the match-ignition device for striking a match thereon.

18. A pocket-safe comprising a handle portion, a match-ignition device comprising a coil of match-ignition strip incased within said handle portion and a support for said match-ignition device; said support teleseoped within said handle portion and mo vable to expose the match-ignition device for striking a match thereon, and having a bottom and an open side; to constitute a match-box which is opened by thrusting the same out from the handle and closed by shutting the same within the handle.

19. The combination of a tubular casing; a match-container telescoped within the casing; a magazine or drum connected to said match-container and also confined within the casing to be extruded therefrom with said match-container; an ignition-strip applied upon thc surface of the drum and extending' within the drum; said drinn having an eye for the passage of the strip; and a releasable clip for holding the applied strip upon the drum; said clip mounted upon the drum and normally confined within said tubular casing.

The combination of a tubular casing; a match-container telescoped within the casing; a magazine or drum connected to said match-container and also confined within the casing to be extruded therefrom with said match-container; and an ignition-strip applied upon the surface of the drum and extending within the drum; said drum having an o ve for the passage of the strip; said drum having fianges between which the strip is confined, and said fianges approximately fitting the interior of said tubular casing.

The combination of a tube; and a combined match-box and ignition device confined tclescopically within said tube and having portions which close the ends of the tube7 one of said closing portions being exposed to serve as a nger-piece; pressure upon which may expose the igniter and match-box at the other end of the tube.

22. The combination of an open-ended tube. or casing; an open-sided match-box having a bottom and fitting in said casing,

said bottom closing the lower end of said tube and affording means for thrusting the box at will out from the top of the tube; and a magazine or drum mounted upon the yupper end of said match-box within said tube; and comprising a portion which closes the upper end of said tube; a strip of matchigniting material being applied upon said drum; said tube lined with paper or the like, to afford frictional resistance to the telescopic movement of the box; and tend to clean or polish the latter.

The combination of a tube or easing; an open-sided match-box teleseoped within said casing and closing one end thereof; a disk or device whereby said match-box is headed; an ignition-strip drum fastened upon said disk; and a cover for said drum; said cover normally closing the upper end of said tube.

The combination of a vtube or casing; an open-sided match-box telescoped within said casing and closing one end thereof; a disk or device whereby said match-box is headed; an ignition-strip drum fastened upon said disk; a cover for said drum; said cover normally closing the upper end of said tube; an arm confined between said disk and said drum; and a clip upon said arm to clip an ignition-strip applied upon said drinn.

The combination of a tube or casing; an open-sided match-box telescoped within said casing and closing one end thereof; a disk or device whereby said match-box is headed; an ignition-strip drum fastened upon said disk; a cover for said drum; said cover normally closing the upper end of said tube; said disk having a flange within which said drum is fitted; and an ignitionstrip applied upon the face of said drinn and clipped thereto; the edge of said cover forming an upper flange for said drum; and said strip being confined against lateral displacement b v means of said flanges.

The combination of a tube or casing; an open-sided match-box telescoped within said casing and closing one end thereof; a disk or device whereby said match-box is headed; an ignition-strip drum fastened upon said disk; and a cover for said drinn; said cover normally closing the upper end of said tube; a step being provided in said tube to limit the outward telescopio movement of said box, and to engage said cover to limit the closing movement thereof.

The combination of a tube or casing; an open-sided match-box telesooped within said casing and closing one end thereof; a disk or device whereby said match-box is headed; an ignition-strip drum fastened upon said disk; and a cover for said drum; said cover normally7 closing the upper end of said tube; a stop being provided in said tube to limit the outward telescopic move- Il G0 ment of said box, and to engage said cover to limit the closing movement thereof; said cover being removable to permit the box to be thrust out from the lower end of the tube und removed therefrom.

28.
