Be it known that I, ALBERT KRAETZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tank-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to certain improvements in removable heads for tanks.
The invention refers particularly to improvements in the removable heads of the tanks used in wood treating machines, but the features of the invention are in nowise limited to this particular class of service. I will state, however, that the conditions existing in wood treating machines are such that the features of the present invention are particularly well adapted for use in connection with such machines. For this reason, I have illustrated the invention as applied to this particular class of service.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a very strong and rigid construction of head, so that the same will properly withstand the very heavy pressures and loads to which it is subjected in service. The head, however, is so constructed that a very tight joint is efiected, and such that the greater the gas pressure to which the head is subjected, the more solidly and perfectly it'is held in position.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a construction such that the head can be very easily removed after the gas pressure has been released. This feature is of importance when it is considered that, on account of its size, the weight of the head will run up into several thousand pounds.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the head and adjacent parts that they can readily be used in connection with tanks of standard size and shape, thus making it possible to use a given head on a standard form of body. 7
Other objects and uses will appear from a detailed description of the same which consists in features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to Fig. 2, the tank body is des ignated by the numeral 7 The body construction illustrated is of rectangular form, and the head is of corresponding form. This is a familiar type of construction for use in wood treating machines, for the reason, among other things, that it permits of the ready accommodation of small cars or trucks, in which the wood sticks are carried. It will be understood that the invention might be used in connection with any other form of body.
Secured to the forward portion of the body is the frame 8, within which the removable head is mounted. The head is so constructed that it may be removed sidewise, traveling on rollers or a track for this purpose. The frame 8 has the opening 9 in its front face and the opening 10 in one of its side walls. The opening 9 is of substantially the size and contour of the body portion of the tank; whereas the opening 10 is of sufficient size to permit the head to be freely moved back and forth through it. The remaining portions of the frame 8 are closed so that, when the opening 9 is covered by the removable head and the opening 10 by a door of suitable construction, the entire tank is closed and rendered gas-tight.
The removable head is designated by the numeral 11. It comprises a rectangular frame-work 12 of overall dimensions somewhat greater than the size of the opening 9,
the central portion of which frame-work is closed by a sheet metal plate 13.
On account of the large size of the opening 9 and the comparatively heavy gas pressure to be resisted, the removable head is constructed of such shape that it can best resist the gas pressure. To accomplish this result, the frame 12 and plate 13 are so formed that said plate is cylindrical in form, as best, shown in Fig. 2. The frame 12 is of rec tangular form to correspond with the shape of the opening 9. Figs. 3 and i show the cross section of the side portions14= and 15 of this frame; whereas Figs. 5 and 6 show the cross section of the upper and lower portions 16 and 17 of the frame on substantially the center line.
It will be observed from an examination of Figs. 3 and l, that each of the side portions 14 and 15 has a front lip 18 and a rear flange 19. It will be observed from an eX- amination of Figs. 5 and 6, that each of the portions 16 and 17 has a horizontal arm 20. The upper portion 16 has an upstanding lip 21; whereas the lower portion 17 has downwardly depending lips 22 and 23 which, between them, provide an inverted trackway. Each of the portions 16 and 17 has a curved flange 24., and the curves of these flanges correspond to the curvature of the plate 13. This plate rests against the side portions 14 and 15 and against the flanges 2 1, being riveted or otherwise secured to all of said parts. It will thus be observed that notwithstanding the curved form of the plate 13, said. plate is nevertheless rigidly secured to the frame 12 throughout its entire periphery.
Referring particularly to Figs. 5 and 6, it will be observed that the upstanding lip 21 travels within a guideway 25 which is of such size as to accommodate said lip and permit of slight adjustments of the removable head back and forth. The lower portion 17 travels on a series of rollers 26, and the distance between the lips 22 and 23 is sufficient to permit a slight movement of the removable head back and forth sidewise on the rollers. The rollers are suit ably spaced to properly carry the load of the removable head as the same travels into or out of the front portion 8, and it will be observed, from an examination of Fig. 1, that the rollers are carried' a considerable distance to one side of the body of the tank. Thus they carry the weight of the removable head at all times, whether the same be in working position or not. In like manner, the guideway 25 is carried out sidewise a sufficient distance to properly guide the removable head during its entire travel.
Completely encircling the opening 9 is a compressible gasket 27, against which the lips 18 seat when the removable head is in working position. This gasket may be of any one of a number of familiar compositions and may be held in position in any desired manner. Adjacent to that side of the portion 8 which is away from the opening 10, there is a stop member 28. This stop member is conveniently illustrated as comprising a bolt, including the nut 29, and the position of the head of which bolt is determined by the number of washers 30, which it carries. By regulating the number of these washers, the position of the head may be set one way or the other, so as to insure a correct position of the removable head when it strikes the stop. The opening 10 may be closed by means of a door 31. This door is conveniently illustrated as comprising a plate 32 mounted on a plurality of hinges 33 and carrying an outside handle 31. The outside face of the plate is provided with a peripheral gasket 35 which seats squarely against the casing when the door is closed so as to insure a gas-tight joint. hen the door is completely opened into the dotted line position of Fig. 3, the removable head may be moved out through the opening 9 without interference.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that, when the removable head is in position and the door 31 is closed, the application of gas pressure will serve to maintain both of said elements solidly in closed posi tion. It will also be seen that the greater the gas pressure within the tank, the more firmly will these elements be held in closed position.
It willbe understood that I do not restrict myself to the use of the features herein disclosed in connection with tanks for treating wood, nor do I restrict myself to their use in connection with rectangular openings, except as I may do so in the claims. It will be understood that, in this connection, I have illustrated the features in connection with a wood treating machine, simply for the reason that they are well adapted for use in connection with such machines, and for the reason that the construction of such machines is well understood in the art.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pressure receptacle, of a head compartment on one end of the same, said compartment having a front opening in alinement with the receptacle and of size and contour substantially the same as that of the interior of the receptacle, there being a peripheral seat on the interior side of said head compartment surrounding said opening and there being a. side opening in the head compartment, a sidewise removable head of contour similar to that of the front opening and of a size to completely close said opening and overlap the edges thereof and rest against said seat, guiding means extending sidewise from the side opening of the head compartment and adapted to guide the removable head in its side movements, the side opening being of suitable size and contour to permit passage of the removable head therethrough, and a door mounted within the head compartment and adapted to seat against the periphery of the side opening and close the same.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pressure receptacle, of a. head compartment on one end of the same, said compartment having a front opening of desired size and contour in alinement with the pressure receptacle, there being a peripheral seat on the interior side of said head compartment surrounding said opening and having a side opening, a sidewise removable head of contour similar to that of the front opening and of a size to overlap the periphery of said opening, and rest against said seat, guiding means extending sidewise from the side opening and adapted to guide the sidewise removable head, the side opening being of proper size and contour to permit passage of the head there through, and a door mounted within the interior of the head compartment and adapted to close the side opening.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pressure receptacle, of a head compartment on one end of the same, said head compartment having a front opening of desired size and contour in alinement with the pressure receptacle, and having a side opening, a sidewise removable head adapted to seat against the interior portion of the head compartment and completely close the front opening, the side opening being of proper size to permit passage of the sidewise removable head therethrough, and a door on the 1nterior of the head compartment adapted to close the side opening.
4. In a device of the class described,the combination with a pressure receptacle, of a head compartment on one end of the same, there being a front opening in the said head compartment in alinement with the pressure receptacle, and there being a side opening in the head compartment, a sidewise removable head of proper size and contour to seat against the interior portion of the head compartment, and completely close the front opening thereof, the side opening being of proper size to permit the passage of the sidewise removable head therethrough, guiding means extending sidewise from the side opening and adapted to guide the sidewise removable head in its movements, and means for closing the side opening in a gas-tight manner.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pressure receptacle, of a head compartment on the same, there being front and side openings in said compartment, a sidewise removable head adapted to seat against the interior portion of the compartment, and completely close the front opening of the same, guiding means adjacent to the side opening and adapted to guide the sidewise removable head in its movements outside of the head compartment, the
- side opening being of proper size to permit passage of the sidewise removable head therethrough, and means for closing the side opening in a gas-tight manner.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pressure receptacle, of a head compartment in communication With the interior of the same, there being front and side openings in said compartment, the front opening being in alinement with the interior of the pressure receptacle, a side-- wise removable head adapted to seat against the interior portion of the head compartment and completely close the front opening thereof, the side opening being of proper size to permit passage of the sidewise removable head therethrough, and means for closing the side opening in a gas tight manner.
7 In a device of the class described, the combination with a pressure receptacle, of a head compartment in communication with the interior of the same, said compartment having a front opening and a side opening, the front opening being in alinement with the interior of the pressure receptacle, a compressible gasket completely encircling the front opening and mounted on the interior of the head compartment, a sidewise removable head adapted to seat against the said gasket and completely close the front opening, the side opening being of proper size to permit passage of the sidewise re- .movable head therethrough, a door on the interior of the head compartment adapted to seat against the side opening and completely close the same, and a compressible gasket on the periphery of the door.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pressure receptacle, of a head compartment in communication with the interior of the same, there being front and side openings in said compartment, a sidewise removable head adapted to completely close the front opening and rest against the interior of the head compartment, a compressible gasket between the periphery of the sidewise removable head and the interior of the periphery of the front opening, the side opening being of proper size to permit passage of the head therethrough, a door adapted to close the side opening, and a compressible gasket between the periphery of the door and the periphery of the side opening.
9. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pressure receptacle, of a head compartment in communication with the interior of the same, there being front and side openings in said compartment, rollers on the bottom portion of the head compartment, a guideway in the upper portion of the head compartment, a sidewise removable head resting on the rollers and of size to completely close the front opening, an upstanding proiection on the head travcling in the guideway, the side opening being of proper size to permit passage of the head therethrough, and means for 010s mg the side opening in a gas-tight manner.
10. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pressure receptacle, of a head compartment, front and side openings therein, rollers in the lower portion of the head compartment, guiding means in alinement' with said rollers, a sidewise removable head mounted on the rollers and adapted to completely close the front opening, cooperating means on the upper portion of the head, and in the upper portion of the head compartment for guiding the head in its travel, the side opening being of proper size to permit passage of the head therethrough, and means for closing the side opening in a gas-tight manner.
11. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pressure receptacle, of a head compartment in communication with the interior of the same, there being front and side openings in said compartment, a sidewise removable head adapted to enter the compartment and being of a size to seat against the interior of the periphery of and completely close the front opening, and means adapted to seat against the interior periphery of and close the side opening in a gas-tight manner.
12. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pressure receptacle, of a head compartment in communication with the interior of the same, front and side openings in said head compartment, a side- Wise removable head adapted to pass through the side opening and overlap the periphery of the interior of the front opening of the head compartment, a gasket interposed between the interior of the head compartment and said removable head, and means for closing the side opening in a gastight manner.
13. In a device of the class described, in combination With a pressure receptacle, a removable head, a seat against which said head is adapted to rest in gas-tight manner, all portions of said seat being in communication With the interior of the receptacle, there being an opening at right angles to said seat, and a removable closure for closing said opening in a gas-tight manner, whereby When said closure is in place pressure Within the receptacle serves to force the removable head against the said seat, for the purpose specified.
