2 SHEETS-"SWEET- 2- WNEsEs ,Li,g ai,83h I r Application filed April 27, 191.5. serial h shown 933,443, dated September 7, 1909, any inveneRSIDE, "new To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, RAYMOND Fiance, a citizen of the United States, resiclihg in .rhilaclelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain improvements in Striping Attachments for initting-lrlacnincs, 01. which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improve ments in knitting machine of the type in J. Hemohills Patent No,
tion relating to the devices whereby the knitting yarn is fed to the needles of the ma.- chine andcomprising means whereby quick changes of yarn can be efiectecl for the purpose of producing relatively narrow stripes.
In the accompanying (iraWinesFigure l is an end View of sufficient of? a Knitting nia= chine of the type to which my invention relates to properly illustrate those parts of the machine constituting the subject or" my invention, ancl Fig. 2 is a View, partly in. section and partly in elevation, looking in the direction of the arrow Fig, 1, ano on a larger scale than said figure.
In Fig 2 of the drawing, 1 and 1* more sent two of the yarn feeders of a machine of the Hemphill type, these yarn feeciers being normally moved by the action of springs 2 to the yarn fee-cling position shown at l but being susceptible of elevation to the position shown at 1 in order to carry the yarn out of range of the needles.
The yarn feeders are under control of le vers 3 and 3 mounted upon the frame of the machine and each of these levers usually has a connection 4, i with a pattern Lli'iiill mounted upon the lower portion of the frame of the machine and constructed that when the yarn feeder 1 raised the feeder 1 Will. be lowered, and vice-versa, so as to provide for the feeding oi either yarn to the needles, and supposing the he of different colors, the consei pient formation of stripes in the linitteci Web. Ciheusual pattern mechanism, however, which acts upon the lovers 3, 8 through. the medium of the connections 4, 45 is not such as to provide for quick changes in the position of the v yarn feeders but such quick changes are nec essary if narrow stripes are to produced. I therefore provide the machine with means whereby the desired quick changes in the position of the yarn feeders can he effectecl inv oendently of any change their position Sncoifieetion of Letters Patent.
starts to act, and resumes control of the same which may he cine to the action of the ordinary pattern mechanism of the machine, the latter, used at ail, being employed only when broader stripes are to he producer. carrying out my invention ll connections 5, 5 between the levers 3 and other ieyers 6, 6 pivoted. in a structure '2" located at one side of that carrying the r are feeders and their operating levers, this structure also providing for the support of a shaft 8 to which are secured a pair oi pattern drums 9, 9, and a ratchet Wheel ill), the latter being engaged by a pawl 11 pit-"oiled at the outer end of an arm 12 which is mount ecl so as to swing upon the shaft 821ml vihrateii, throughthe medium of a link connection 18, by a vertically reciprocating 14, the latter, being suitably guicleil on. the frame of the machine and normally pressed by means of spring i l- The levers 3, 3 can either be actuated by the main hattcrn device through the connecare tions 1, 45, or by the supplementary pattern device through the medium or the levers 6, i 6- ancl connections 5, 5 it being understood, at} of course, that the pattern drum which con-- trois the connections 4-, 4 releases the same when the supplementary pattern device when said suppieineiitai pattern device ceases to act.
lilounted in hearings oijacent to the lower end of the bar 1 3": is rock shaft "which carries an arm 16, and upon the latter pivotaliy mounted a toe It? normally held in operative position o means o? a spring; 1%. constant rocking; increment is inn? the 15 by any suithle roean as long; a
t W ment of the of the arr-1 l 1 rte-fl by said toe 9.11.; permitted to drop on the hackw 1 of the a each lift of the bar 11 companied ioy a iorwar u movem ratchet Wheel 16 to the extent 1 i and a iihe forward. movement of a pattern drums 9 9.
'fhe spring M besides impar i Ward movement to the (lrayvthe some lateraliy out o" mov n'ient the toe 1'? hot f ol is too wheel, or other device 19 i hav piyotally in the machine and connected by a link 21 to a bell crank lever 22, likewise pivoted on the frame of the machine and carrying an antifriction roller 23 which bears against the back of the bar 14:, as shown in Fig. 1.
Some of the links of the nattern chain have lugs 19 and when the lever 20 is acted upon by one of said lugs the lower end of the bar 1i will be pushed inwardly in the path of the swinging toe 17 and the baniwill be reciprocated once for each vibration of the arm 16 as long as it remains in this position, the withdrawal of the lug 19 from the lever' 20 permitting the bar 14: to swing outwardly away from the path of the swinging toe 17 and thereby arresting the reciprocating' movements of saidbar 14.
If the bar 14 happens to be projected while the arm 16 is in its uppermost position, the contact of the toe 17 with the bar 14, on the downward swing of the arm, will cause said toe to yield until it has been carried below the end of the bar, whereupon it will at once swing forward again, so as to engage the bar-on its next upward movement.
The pattern drum 9 has alternate high members 1* and low members 3 and the pattern drum 9 'has like high members 13 and alternating low members, the high members of one drum being in line laterally with the low members of the adjoining drum.
The levers 6 and, 6 have projecting teeth 25 and 25 for the action, respectively, of the drums 9 and 9*, consequently when a lever 6 is depressed by the action of the drum 9 so as to raise the corresponding yarn feeder 1 out of feeding position the lever (3 will be permitted to rise by the corresponding drum 9 so as to permit the yarn feeder 1' con trolled thereby to drop into feeding position and when the lever 6 rises the lever 6 will at the same time be depressed, consequently there will be a change in the positionof the yarn feeders 1 and 1 for each intermittent movement of the drums 9, I), that is to say, for each forward movement of the ratchet wheel 10 to the extent of one tooth and each vertical reciprocation of the bar 14, hence, as long as the lower end of said bar is held in position to engage with the swinging too 17 there will boa change of feed for each "ibration 01' the arm 16, but when the lower end of the bar 1% has been permitted to swing out of the path of movement of the toe l? the same yarn will be fed to the neodles continuously until the bar 14 has again been placed under control of the vibrating arm 16 by the patterndevice 19. It will be evident, therefore, that as long as the intermittent forward movements are being imparted to the drums 9 and 9 quick changes in the positions of the yarn feeders 1 and 1 will be elfected and narrow stripes will be formed in the knitted web but when the movements of the drums 9 and 9 are arrested the same yarn will be fed to the needles during such period of rest and a stripe of any desired width can be produced.
If more than two yarn feeders are employed the number of pattern drums may be correspondingly increased.
I claim:
1. The combination, in a knitting machine, of a plurality of yarn feeders each movable into and out of feeding position, controllers,
one for each of said yarn feeders, said con trollers being such as to cause movement of one feeder out of feeding position as another feeder is moved into feeding position, and means for moving said controllers simultaneously, said means comprising a reciprocable bar, a vibrating actuator therefor, and means for moving said bar into and out of the path of said actuator, said means comprising a pattern chain, a lever acted on by said chain, and a bell crank lever having one arm connected to said first-named lever and the other arm having a bearing on the recip' rocable bar, in respectto which bearing the bar is free to slide.
2. The combination, in a knitting machine, of a plurality of yarn feeders each movable into and ,out of feeding position, controllers, one for each of said yarn feeders, said controllers being such as to cause movement of one feeder out of feeding position as another feeder is moved into'feeding position, and means for moving said controllers siimiltaneously, said means comprising a reciprmrablc bar. a vibrating actuator therefor, having a spring-pressed toe there on, and means for moving said bar into and out of the path of movement of said toe.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RAYMOND FISHER.
