Some of the links of the nattern chain have lugs 19 and when the lever 20 is acted upon by one of said lugs the lower end of the bar 1i will be pushed inwardly in the path of the swinging toe 17 and the baniwill be reciprocated once for each vibration of the arm 16 as long as it remains in this position, the withdrawal of the lug 19 from the lever' 20 permitting the bar 14: to swing outwardly away from the path of the swinging toe 17 and thereby arresting the reciprocating' movements of saidbar 14.
If the bar 14 happens to be projected while the arm 16 is in its uppermost position, the contact of the toe 17 with the bar 14, on the downward swing of the arm, will cause said toe to yield until it has been carried below the end of the bar, whereupon it will at once swing forward again, so as to engage the bar-on its next upward movement.
The pattern drum 9 has alternate high members 1* and low members 3 and the pattern drum 9 'has like high members 13 and alternating low members, the high members of one drum being in line laterally with the low members of the adjoining drum.
The levers 6 and, 6 have projecting teeth 25 and 25 for the action, respectively, of the drums 9 and 9*, consequently when a lever 6 is depressed by the action of the drum 9 so as to raise the corresponding yarn feeder 1 out of feeding position the lever (3 will be permitted to rise by the corresponding drum 9 so as to permit the yarn feeder 1' con trolled thereby to drop into feeding position and when the lever 6 rises the lever 6 will at the same time be depressed, consequently there will be a change in the positionof the yarn feeders 1 and 1 for each intermittent movement of the drums 9, I), that is to say, for each forward movement of the ratchet wheel 10 to the extent of one tooth and each vertical reciprocation of the bar 14, hence, as long as the lower end of said bar is held in position to engage with the swinging too 17 there will boa change of feed for each "ibration 01' the arm 16, but when the lower end of the bar 1% has been permitted to swing out of the path of movement of the toe l? the same yarn will be fed to the neodles continuously until the bar 14 has again been placed under control of the vibrating arm 16 by the patterndevice 19. It will be evident, therefore, that as long as the intermittent forward movements are being imparted to the drums 9 and 9 quick changes in the positions of the yarn feeders 1 and 1 will be elfected and narrow stripes will be formed in the knitted web but when the movements of the drums 9 and 9 are arrested the same yarn will be fed to the needles during such period of rest and a stripe of any desired width can be produced.
If more than two yarn feeders are employed the number of pattern drums may be correspondingly increased.
I claim:
1. The combination, in a knitting machine, of a plurality of yarn feeders each movable into and out of feeding position, controllers,
one for each of said yarn feeders, said con trollers being such as to cause movement of one feeder out of feeding position as another feeder is moved into feeding position, and means for moving said controllers simultaneously, said means comprising a reciprocable bar, a vibrating actuator therefor, and means for moving said bar into and out of the path of said actuator, said means comprising a pattern chain, a lever acted on by said chain, and a bell crank lever having one arm connected to said first-named lever and the other arm having a bearing on the recip' rocable bar, in respectto which bearing the bar is free to slide.
2. The combination, in a knitting machine, of a plurality of yarn feeders each movable into and ,out of feeding position, controllers, one for each of said yarn feeders, said controllers being such as to cause movement of one feeder out of feeding position as another feeder is moved into'feeding position, and means for moving said controllers siimiltaneously, said means comprising a reciprmrablc bar. a vibrating actuator therefor, having a spring-pressed toe there on, and means for moving said bar into and out of the path of movement of said toe.
