GUARD-RAIL FOR PASSENGER-CARS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Conr- BEAR, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the town of Homer, county of Lincoln, Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guard- Rails for Passenger-Cars, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in guard rails for passenger cars as described in the present specification and shown in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.

The invention consists essentially of the novel means employed whereby a rail on the outer side of a car is adapted to be usedas a guard and in the novel means employed for moving said rail into and out of position.

The objects of the invention are to insure the safety of conductors while walking along the steps of a car, to prevent passengers from boarding or alighting while the car is in motion and generally to provide a guard for street cars which will be easy to operate, simple and cheap to manufacture and durable.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a street car showing the guard rail in its down position. Fig. 2 is an end view of a car showing the guard rail in the down position. Fig. 3 is a detail of the brackets and frame for holding the guard rail, the pulleys and cords for operating the guard rail being shown in dotted lines on the bracket. Fig. 1 is a detail of the operating lever and winding drum for raising or lowering the guard rail.

Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.

Referring to the drawings, 1 is a street car having at each end the hollow vertical rods 2 running from the floor of the car to the roof, the said floor having cu-t therethrough the holes 3 coinciding with the hollow rods 2.

a is a vertical trackway formed by the bars 5 and 6, said bars 5 and 6 being secured at their lower ends to the brackets 7 on the rods 2 about midway of the length of said rods and at their upper ends secured to the hollow brackets 8 on the rods 2 adjacent to the upper ends of said rods.

9 is a guard rail suspended from each end in the trackway 4E and adapted to slide upwardly and downwardly in said trackway.

10 is a cable secured at one end to the end of the guard rail 9 adjacent to the front of the car and running over the pulleys 11 and 12 in the hollow bracket 8 and down the hollow shaft 2 over the pulley 13 and adapted to wind around the winding drum 1 1 which is suitably secured beneath the car flooring.

15 is a cable attached at one end to the end of the guard rail 9 adjacent to the rear of the car and running over pulleys in the hollow bracket 8 and down the hollow rod 2 over suitable pulleys to the winding drum 14.

16 is a crank, preferably located in the front of the car where it may be operated by the motorman, and attached to the winding drum 14. thus operating the cables 10 and 15 in raising and lowering the guard rail 9.

17 is an auxiliary bracket of which there may be any required number according to the length of the car.

In the operation of this invention when the car is set in motion the crank 16 is turned by the motorman or others and the guard rail 9 allowed to slide down the trackway 4: until it rests on the bottom thereof thus forming a guard for the full length of the car for the protection of the conductor or others who may be on the steps of the car. As the running of this guard rail is under the control of the motorman and is always in the down position when the car is in motion passengers can only board or alight from the car after the motorman has stopped the car and turned the crank 16 thus raising the guard rail and leaving the passage to and from the car clear.

What I claim is:

l. A guard rail for passenger cars comprising a plurality of rods in pairs supported by brackets and forming vertical supports and trackways out from the side of the car, a corresponding number of hollow posts to said pairs and communicating therewith through the upper brackets, a rail sliding in said tracks and cables extending through said posts and said upper brackets and secured to said rail and suitably operated.

2.
