means that will prevent air or moisturegaining access to the interior of the receptacle, said means also serving as a cushlon to prevent damage to the cover or the receptacle.
Simple and practical forms of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the 1mproved receptacle. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective View of the cover for the receptacle. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the cover shown partly in section.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the re-" ceptacle and cover shown assembled. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing a modifled form of the invention.
The improved receptacle is especially adapted for use in connection with cigarettes and other tobacco products and it is preferred that the same be made of fragile material and ornamented so that the same will be pleasing to the eyes of purchasers and of such a nature that when emptied of its'original contents, may be used as an ornamental receptacle for various articles.
The invention contemplates in its general organization and in the various forms shown a body 1, and a cover 2. It is preferred that the receptacle and cover be rectangular in shape, and the cover 2 has a depending inset flange 3 on its under surface, that conforms to the shape of the open upper port on of the body 1, and is adapted to fit w1th1nthe upper portion of the receptacle 1n abutting relation with the inner surface of the walls Specification of Letters Patent.

of said receptacle, the portion 4: of the cover beyond the flange 3 resting on the upper edge of said walls.
The outer portions of the corners of the flange 3 are provided with notches, 5 forming seats for holding a combined seal and cushion 6 in contact with and in surrounding relation to the said flange. The combined cushion and seal 6 is formed of a resilient material, and as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and a of the drawing may be a continuous band of flat rubber, that will lie flat on the portion 4 of the cover beyond the flange 3 so that when the cover 2 is seated on the body 1, said cushion and seal 6 will be interposed between the top edges of the walls of the body 1 and the cover 2, and thereby serve as a seal as well as to form a cushion thatwill prevent damage being done to the cover or body when the cover is being placed on the body. It is to be understood, of course, that the notches 5 serve to prevent accidental displacement of the seal and cushion 6, such notches, as shown being in the form of corner recesses in which the seal and cushion seats, and are shaped so that no sharp edges are formed that might cut or otherwise damage the said seal and cushion.
By referring to the drawing it will be observed that the corner recesses 5 are of such a nature that the seal and cushion 6 is held perfectly flat at the corners thereby preventing said seal' and cushion becoming twisted, or otherwise distorted from its normal flat condition.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 5 two of the combined seals and cushions are employed in connection with the cover 2, the seals being held in engagement with the forward portion of the cover 2 and with the outer surfaces of the flange 3 so that a seal and cushion is interposed between the outer side of the flanges and the inner surface of the walls of the body 1, and between the cover 2, and the top edge of the walls of the said body. In this form of the invention, as in the preferred form, the seals are held in proper position by means of their engagement with the notches or grooves 5.
I claim as my invention seated in' the corner recesses to hold said A receptacle comprising a rectangular seal and cushion in a Hat condition. 19 body, a cover therefor having a depending In testimony whereof I have aflixed my flange that extends into and conforms tothe signature in the presence of two Witnesses. contour of the body, said flange being pro- GEORGE R.
