To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE T. Pnansonsy a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and
State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire-Extinguishers,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to syringes in which a stream or jet of liquid is ejected from a reservoirduring each outward and inward movement of a piston, and it is the object of the invention to i provide improved means to obtain'this result which.a re simple and cheap in construction, eflicient in operation and adapted for fire extinguishers.
In carrying out the invention I provlde a reservoir having an outlet and mount a cylinder in the reservoir with a piston to.
reciprocate in the cylinder, said cylinder havinginlets adjacent opposite ends controlled by valves opening into and closing outwardfroni the cylinder and having outlets adjacent its ends with valves opening outward from and closing into the cylinder, and provide means to connect said cylinder outlets to the outlet of the reservoir, whereby as the piston is reciprocated liquid is drawn from the reservoir into thecylin der alternately to opposite ends of the piston ing a body portion 1, preferably cylindrical inshape, and the ends 2 and 3 secured thereto as,by solderingor otherwise, the end 2 having a discharge outlet 4 and the end 3 a filler opening closed by a plug 5, said plug being constructed with an inwardly opening and outwardly closing spring influenced check valve to permit entrance of air into the reservoir as the liquid is ejected therefrom. The end 2 is preferably dished to permit of the standing of the syringe Specification of; Letters Patent.

Mounted in the reservoir is a piston chamber comprisin a cylinder 6, preferably of less length than the reservoir as shown, the said cylinder being' closed at opposite ends by heads 7 and 8, and having ports 9 and 10 through the heads to the cylinder to provide inlets to the cylinder at opposite ends, said ports having spring influenced valves 28 and 29 closing outward from and opening into the piston cylinder. The cylinder 'end 7 has a chamber 16 which has a port ll connected with outlet means in the form of a tube'17 with the outlet =1 of the reservoir. Directly in line with the port 11 is a port 11 leading into the end of 'the piston cylinder to constitute an outlet for the cylinder, said port normally being closed by 'a spring in-' fluenced' valve 12 closing into the cylinder and opening outwardtherefrom. A- port 13 in the opposite head 8 of the cylinder communicates with the cylinder to constitute an outlet for the opposite end of the cylinder, communication between said'port'and the cylinder being controlled by a spring influenced. valve 14: closing into the cylinder and opening outward therefrom. The said port 13 is at all times connected to the chambero'r casing 16 by a tube 15. The piston chamber extends from the reservoir end'3, but not to the "full-length of the reservoir.
The cylinder 6 has a .driving fit with the cylinder heads 7 and 8- andthe head 8 has a bore extending therethrough of the same diameter as the bore of the cylinder 6 to constitute a continuation thereof. The
piston chamber is mounted in the reservoir recess in said nut to the exterior of the 'piston chamber and reservoir, and has an operatinghandle 22 fixed to said projecting end.
' To p'ermitof the drawing of the liquid from the lowermost part of the reservoir, I provide a tube 27 to lie adjacent-the side of the reservoir and in operation below the piston ends with the ends adjacent opposite ends of the reservoir, saidtube 27 being connected to the inlet ports 9 and 10. of the piston cylinder by tubes 24 and 25. To permit drawing of the liquid from either end of the reservoir whether the reservoir is full or partially empty, or held in a' horizontal Hosition during the discharge thereof, or inclined upward or downward, the ends of the tube 27 are provided with gravityseated inwardly closing and outwardly opening valves 38, 39, consisting of balls connected by a rod 40 extending through the tube andthe said balls adapted to cooperate with valve seats formed at or'connected to the ends of the tube 27.
In operation assuming the syringe to be held in a horizontal position, as the piston is drawn out it will unseat thevalve' 28 drawing liquid through the port 9 into the piston chamber in front-of the piston, the piston at the same time ejecting air which may be in back of the piston out through the outlet port 13, tube 15, chamber 16, port 11, tube 17, and the reservoir outlet. Upon the piston being moved inward it will e ect the liquid previously drawn into. thecylinder in front of the piston out through port 11 unseating the valve 12, through chamber 16,"'port 11 and tube 17 connected with the reservoir outlet, and simultaneously therewith unseat the valve 29 and draw liquid from the reservoir through the port 10 into the cylinder in back of the piston, which liquid is discharged from in back of the piston during thenext outward movement of the piston through port'13 as here- 'inbefore described. This operation is repeated so long as the piston is reciprocated. The outlet 4 of the reservoir is preferably. restricted, and as the liquid is drawn from the reservoir and injected into the chamber or tube 17, this volume of liquid being greater than what can be ejected through the'restricted outlet, the incoming liquid will tend to create a pressure in said chamber and thereby increase the force of the ejected stream.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In combination with a receptacle, a

and divided by said piston into two compartments, valved inlet connections from the receptacle' 'to said compartments, an outlet leading to the adjacent cylinder compartment, a valve movable in said chamber lengthwise of the pump and controlling sa1d port, and a valved connection extending from said chamber to the other compartment of the pump cylinder.
