E. CERF.
FASTENER FOR HATBANDS.

FAs'rENEn non HATBANDs.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A11 15, 19116.
Application filed. July 12, 1915. Serial No. 39,338.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMILE CERF, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Fasteners for Hatbands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fastening devices, and has for its object to provide such an article particularly adapted for attaching an elastic band or a bow string to a hat, by means of which adjustment can be effected.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a staple, on which is carried a clasp, between which the band or string is received and held by the clamping action of the clasp; the staple being adapted to pierce the border of the fillet in the hat and be clenched at its end thereon.
The preferred form of my invention is exemplified in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a hat provided with an elastic band held in place by my improved fastener. Figs. '2, 3, 4t and 5 show enlarged detail perspective views of the fastener in its various positions.
In the drawings, the fastener is' shown as comprising an elongated U-shaped staple 10, upon which is adapted to be received a thin metallic clasp 11 provided with nibs 12 on either side of its longitudinal central line, said nibs being, preferably, formed by striking up a triangular portion in the adjacent metal of the clasp.
In use. a string or band 11 of a hat or the like is passed through the staple above the clasp 11, thereupon said clasp is moved upwardly on the staple until it strikes the band, when it is bent or folded along its longitudinal axis 15; the nibs 12 piercing the fabric of the string or band 1 1 above the closed end 16 of the staple. In this position the free end 17 of the band or string is folded back against the main portion 1% and the said band is securely held against removal.
The staple 10, with the band in position thereon, is then punched through the border 18 of the hat fillet 19 and the legs on the opposite side of the border are bent over or clenched, as shown in Fig. 2, where it will be seen they are hidden from view and the clasp is partly obscured on account of its position in the groove between the border 18 and the hat brim.
In practice, the band 11 of the hat is permanently attached at its end 20, and by providing my improved fastener for the opposite end the band may, obviously, be adjusted 'to any length required. The clasp 11 is constructed of a pliable metal and may be bent and re-straightened successfully without injury. The provisions of the nibs 12 passing through the band above the closed end of the staple serve to securely hold the former against possibility of slipping between the elasp and staple when a strain is applied thereto.
It is obvious that some variation in the structure and use of my device may be without departing from the spirit of my invcntion as disclosed in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination, a hat, a pendent strap, means for adjustably fastening the strap in place thereon at one end, said means comprising a staple and a metallic clasp slidably received upon the legs of said staple between which clasp and the head of the staple the strap is adapted to be placed, said clasp being adapted to fold over the strap and pinch the same against the head of the staple to retain it in position, and said staple being adapted to be detachably se cured to the hat.
2. In combination, a hat having a fillet or annular band, a pendent strap therefor, and means for adj ustably securing said strap in place on the hat, comprising an elongated staple, a metallic clasp provided with openings along its longitudinal axis to receive the legs of said staple, said clasp being movable to position for clamping the end of said strap between it and the head of the staple, and the legs of said staple being adapted to pierce the border of said fillet and be clenched on the opposite side.
In combination, a hat having an annular band or fillet, a pendent strap therefor, a staple adapted to pass through the border of said fillet and be clenched on the inner side, a bent clasp carried slidably upon-the legs of said staple between which and the head of the staple said strap is received, and nibs carried on said clasp and piercing said strap at the outer side of the head.
4-. A fastening device for fabric straps, comprising a staple, and a metallic clasp provided with openings in its longitudinal axis to receive the legs of said staple and movable to position adjacent the head thereof, between Which and the head a strap is adapted to be received, said clasp being foldable along its longitudinal axis to bind the strap against the head of the staple.
5. A fastening device for fabric straps, comprising an elongated staple, a clasp provided with openings along its longitudinal axis to receive the legs of said staple, and
nibs formed on the inner side of said clasp at either side of the axis, said clasp being foldable over the head of the staple to pinch a strap received between.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
