Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1916.
Application filed August 19, 1913, Serial No. 785,556. Renewed June 12, 1916. Serial No. 103,339.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. HANRAI-IAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Single- Tvpe- Casting Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear; and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to type casting attachments for linotype machines, such as are disclosed in my copending application #732,101 filed November 18., 1912, and has for its object to improve the means for delivering the metal to the attachment, as will appear more fully below.
\Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construes tion and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed andparticularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views:Figure 1, is a. plan view of the easting pot and associated parts of a linotype machine with my improvement applied" thereto, and also shows in plan a portion of my single type casting attachment made the subject of my application above; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the castingpot and associated parts shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the cylinder for delivering molten metal which 1 locate in the linotype casting pot; and Fig. 4 is a detail, view of the spring means l employ to control the casting lever of my attachment.
1 indicates a portion of the frame of a linotype machine to which is attached as at 2 the well known operating lever 3, attached to the piston rod 4', serving to operate the piston 50 in the cylinder 51 located in the melting pot 5, and which delivers metal through the spout 6 to cast lines of type. l'pivot to said frame as 7 a second lever 8, and connect it to a second piston rod 9*, operating a piston 26, in the cylinder 10, having the inlet 11, the delivery channel 12, and delivery'spout 13.
The lever 8 is provided with theplate 14, extending over the lever 3, so that the latter in one of its motions raises the said lever 8, but not in the other. in order to return the raised lever 8, I provide a reciprocating rod 16, preferably housed in the casing 17 and surrounded by the spring 18. Said rod is provided with the notch 20, into which I fits the latch 21, pivoted by the rod 22 to the bracket 23 supporting the casing 17 and secured to the frame 1, as at 25, as shown. The pivoting rod 22 carries at its lower end the toe 27 adaptedto turn with said rod and latch and to thereupon engage and disengagesaid plate 11. That is to say, when said latch is in position to render said pusher rod 16 inactive as by engaging the notch 20, then the toe 27 underlies said plate'll and holds the lever 8 in its raised and inactive position. lVhen in this position it is evident the linotype lever may rise and fall without affecting the attachment lever 8. It is also desirable to be able to readily, attach and detach said lever 8 from its piston rod 9, and to accomplish this purpose I provide the pin 30 for detachably connecting said parts, and also the latch 31 for locking them together and unlocking them when desired. The said piston rod 9 is also preferably bent or offset as at 3% (Fig. 2) in order to reach the attachment cylinder 10 located to one side in the pot 5 as plainly shown in Fig. 2. -This attachment cylinder is preferably of the construction illustrated, and may be made from a single piece. Its spout 13, projects through an additional opening 37 in the side of the pot 5, and preferably located at about 90 degrees from the spout 6.
As the single type casting attachment mechanism. per so designated 'by 40' is fully disclosed in my copending application above and forms no part of the present invention, it will not be described herein further than to say, the molten metal is delivered from the spout 13 to a matrix located at l1, and single type are cast, trimmed and delivered simultaneously with the casting of lines of type from the spout 6 of the linotype machine. By this particular improvement, however, the delivery of the metal to the single type casting attachment 40 is made more independent of the operation oi the iinotype machine, for by simply manipulatthe latch lever 21, the flow of metal to said casting attachment may be readily started or stopped without in any way interiering with the operations of the iinotype machine. Farther, the attachment cylinder, T
spout, etc, may be readily removed and cleaned without causing any inconvenience.
It is obvious that. those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction as well as the arrangement of parts without depart ing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the above disclosure, except as may be required by the claims.
What I claim is 2- 1. in a machine of the class described the combination of means for casting a line of type comprising an operating lever, a melting pot and a cylinder in said pot; a second leve adapted to be moved by said operating lever; a second cylinder in said pot associated with said second lever; and means for delivering metal from said second cylinder for casting single type, substantially as described. I
2. In a machine of the class described the combination of means for casting a line of type comprising an operating lever, a melting pot and a cylinder in said pot; a second lever adapted to be moved by said operating lever; a second cylinder in said pot associated with said second lever; and means comprising a piston and spout associated with the second cylinder for delivering metal from said second cylinder for casting single type, substantially as described.
lin a machine of the cl: ss described the combination of means for casting a line of type comprising an operating lever and a melting pot associated with said lever; asecond lever associated with said operating lever and pot; connections by which said second lever may be raised by said operating lever; and means for holding said second lever in its raised position, substantially as described.
4. In a machine of the class described the combination of a means for casting a line of type comprising an operating lever and a :melting pot associated with said lever; a
second lever associated with said operating 'lever and pot; connections by which said ing'lever; means comprising a spring for normally returning said second lever after it has been raised; and means for holding said second lever in its raised position when desired, substantially as described.
6. In a. machine of the class described the combination of means for casting a line or" type comprising an operating lever and a melting pot associated with said lever; a second lever associated with said operating lever and pot; connections by which said second lever may be raised by said operating lever; a cylinder in said pot also associated with said second lever; means associated with said cylinder for delivering metal from said pot; and means for holding said second lever in its raised position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afi'ix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JUHN EHANRAHAN.
