''o all '1r/mfr 1l t may concern Be it known that I, Trioiwias HoMANs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hempstead, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Line(asting Maf rfliines, of which the following is a specifica' tiem.
This invention relates to line casting inaehines, and more especially7 to those of the linotype class employing a slide carrying a mold disk or wheel and having power means for moving the saine toward and from the matrices prior and subsequent to each casting operation. Heretofore, in the operationA of machines of this class, the mold-carrying slide is frequently disconnected from its poiv'cnopeialted means and pulled forward for the purpose of cleaning outeiny accuinulated type metal. Practical experience has shown, however, thatY safety means must be provided to prevent running of the machine, or at least the casting operation, if the operator sh'ould attempt to start the machinebej fore the mold-carrying slide has been returned to operative position and again'connccted to its operating means.
YThe primary object of the present invention is to provide a control between the main clutch which drives the machine and theV mold-carrying slide, which prevents starting of the machine if the mold-carrying slide is disconnected from its power operating means for the purpose of drahwingthe slide forward and backward by hand for the removal of,` the type metal which may have leaked from the` mouth piece of the metal pot and which prevents disconnecting of the.

To this end the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations and arrangements of parts, all asjwill be hereinafter more fully describedhthe"novelifeatures beingpointed out particularly in the claims at the end of the specification.

(lne embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing and will be described ini detail in 'this specification. It is to be understood,however, that the invention is not limited to this particular embodiment of vthe invention, as equivalent devices may be employed to obtain the saine or similar results. In the present instance, the invention is shown, as an example-,iii connect-ion with a line casting machine ot the well-known linotype class, the molds 1 being mountedv on mounted to reciprocate horizontally between guides 6 on the main frame 7, it being understood that in a machine of this class the slide reciprocates to carry the mold to and from a line' of matrices held at the forward side of the mold wheel or at the right hand side of the mold wheel as these parts appear in-Fig. 1. These reciprocating movements of the moldjcarrying slide are effected at proper intervals and by power derived from the cam 8, the latterbeing driven, as iisual, from the main or power shaft of the machine and under the control of the main clutch, which will be hereinafter described. `The cam cooperates with ay roller 9, the latter being` mounted on a cam lever 10, this cani lever also carrying a roller 11 adapted to rest in a socket y1'?. formed at th rear end of the mold-carrying slide. The lever 10 is suspended from a pivot pin 13 on one arm of a hand `lever 14, the -latterbeing pivoted to rock on a pin 15. lhen the` parts occupy the full line position shownin Fig. 1, the mold-carrying slide will be operatively connected to cam 8 which operates it. By pressing downwardly on the hand lever 14 and thereby causing the parts to assume the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1, the roller 1l will be withdrawn from the socket 1Q and hence the mold-carrying slide will be disconnected from its power operating means.
According to the present invention, a
,safety controller is provided whereby the plied to the .mechanism which governs the operation of the/main driving clutch. Machines of this class are usually driven by a pulley 16 which .forms one member of a 5 Inain driving clutch,- the other member i7 of the clutch being connected to the mam driving shaft 18, and the clutch is engaged and disengaged by a bar 19, one end of which is eeonnected to a clutch controlling lever 26, while the oppositeend of this bar is'conne'cted to'a starting -lever`21. `The'general construction of the main driving clutch and its controlling means is disclosed fully in the patent to Mergenthaler, No. 436,532,
dated September 16, 1890. In the present instance, the starting lever 21 'is connected to the bar 19 by a toggle 22. When the starting lever occupies the position shown in Fig. 2, the" main driving clutch is.en- 20 gaged, and when this starting lever is pushed toward the rear of the machine andA in an upward direction with reference tov Fig. 2, the main driving clutch is disengaged and the operation of the machine is.

as shown -in Fig. 2, and also prevents .the operator from mying the starting lever into the run/ning position while the mold-carrying slide is disconnected Afrom its power operating 'means In the construction shownthe longerside of 'the bar 19 is provided witli a projection 23, a lever 24 isarranged below the bar' 19, it being pivoted on pin.25 .and provided onits upper side with a toothzior projection 26, and a link'27 is 40 pivotally connected at 28 to the lever 24 and is connected by the pin 29 to the cam lever 10. l'Vhile the starting lever 21 is in the position ,shown in Fig. 2, in .which position the main-clutch is engaged and the machine running, the tooth or projection 23 on the bar 19 is opposite and immediately above the tooth or projection 26on lever 24, and itherefore it will`be impossible for the oper- ,ator Vtodepress the handle 14 to disconnect the mold carrying slide from the cam' lever, for the reason that rising Vof the cam lever is prevented owing to the connectionof the cam lever withthe lever 24 by the link 27, the lever 24 being then locked down. When the starting handle 21 is pushed to they rear of the machine or in' an upward direction with rele'rence to Fig. 2, this bar 19 will be shifted into the position shown in Fig-1, the tooth or projection 23 on this lever being then clear of the tooth or projection 26 on the lever 24, and the latter is then free to rise, and the handle 14 may then be operated to bring the parts into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1, the mold carrying slide being then disconnected from its power operating means. While the mold-carrying slide is disconnected from its power operating means, it is impossible for the operator to start the machine, as movement of the bar 19 in a direction to start the machine is prevented by the` abutting of the tooth or projection 23 thereon against the projection 26 on the lever 24. However, afterthe moldcarrying slide has been again connected with its power operating means, the bar 19 is unlocked' and the machine may be started.

combination with the driving clutch, means for engaging and disengaging it, the moldcarrying slide, and operating means for the slide capable of being disconnected'therefrom, of means to prevent engaging of the driving clutch while the mold-carrying slide is disconnected from its operating means.
v2. In a machine of vthe linotype class, the combination with'y the driving clutch, .the mold carrying slide, and operating means for the slide capable of being disengaged with respect thereto, of means tov prevent disconnecting of the mold-carrying slide y from its operating is engaged.

In a machine of the linnotype class, the combination with the driving clutch, the moldcarrying slide," and operating means for the slide capable'ofbeing connected and disconnected with respect thereto,.of means to prevent engaging of the driving clutch while the mold-'carrying slide is disconnected from its operating means and to prevent such disconnection while-the driving clutch is engaged.
