ELECTRIC-ARC FURNACE FOR THE TREATMENT GASES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL OLAF ANonRsnN DovLE, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Notodden, Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Arc Furnaces for the Treatment of Gases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willcally to a flame disk, the air or gases usually are so conducted through the furnace that they pass as closely as possible along the The gases either are whole flame surface. introduced through holes directed toward the flame "disk and taken out at the periphery, or they are introduced at the periphery and taken out near the central part of the furnace. and cooling effect may be attained by disposing the outlet openings systematically instead of taking out the gases as usual through openings at the periphery. It has also been found, that the diameter of the furnace may be reduced considerably in this way.
According to the present invention a number of outlet openings. of suitable form and cross section are disposed between the center and the periphery of the furnace, while the air or gas inlets may be disposed as usual in relation to the flame disk. In this way there is created a number of fields, varying according to the capacity of the furnace, and in which the air or gases are being conducted along paths, which are considerably shorter than in an ordinary furnace. Further the capacity of the different outlets may be regulated, thereby. influencing the length of the gas or air paths, until the best possible heating and cooling conditions are obtained. 7 I
The increased output of the furnace according to the present invention possibly also is due to the effective coolingcaused by part of the cold gases being sucked out through thecomparatively narrow outlets together with the heated gases. This effect may be increased by providing the outlets with cooling devices E, for instance, as indi-.
cated, inthe form of a cooling tube. The outlets may also be provided with devices (not shown) for imparting to the gases a rbulent movement around a cooling device.
Claims: v 1. In an electric'arc furnace for the treatment of'gases a magnetically spread flame disk, gas inletopenings for introducing the gas into the furnace disposed over the area of the flame disk, and a number of gas outlets disposed between the center and the periphery of the said furnace with the object of obtaining a short passage of gases in the furnace.
2. In an electric arc furnace for. the reduction of gases a magnetically spread flame disk, gas inlet openings for introducing gas into the furnace, said openings being disposed angularly to the flame disk and over the substantial area of the same and anumber of (gas outlets disposed between the center an the peripheryof the said furnace with the object ofobtaining a short passage of gases in the furnace.

In an electric arc furnace for the re- 110 duction of gases amagnetically spread flame disk, gas inlet openings for introducing gas into the furnace, disposed over the area of the flame disk, and gas outlets located between the center and the periphery of the furnace, said outlets being provided with means for cooling the gases with the object of obtaining short gas passages in the=fur nace and an effective cooling of the gases after leaving the furnace chamber.
4. An electric arc furnace producing a magnetically spread flame disk having inlet openings in its side walls for the admission of gas through its sides to said flame -disk and outlet openings disposed between the center of said disk and its periphery, -whereby gas treated by said arc will exit through said outlet openings at points intermediate the ends of the radii of said disk.
5 An electric arc furnace producing a magnetically spread flame disk having outlet openings in its side walls between the center of said "disk and its periphery surrounded by a number of inlet openings.
6. An electric arc furnace producing a magnetically spread flame disk having outlet openings in its side walls disposed between the center of said disk and itsperiphery and surrounded by a number of smaller inlet openings whereby gases will besubjected to the action of said are disk in fields eccentric thereto.
7. An electric arc furnace for producing a magnetically spread flame disk having inlet openingsvin its side walls disposed over the area of said disk, and outlet openings disposed between said inlet openings at points between the center and periphery of said disk, and cooling means arranged in the paths of the gases issuing from said outlet openings around which the treated gases flow.
