To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS C. SANDnRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville,.in the county of Clay and State of Illinois, have invented certain new an useful Improvements in Head-Block-Setting Devices for Baling-Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in baling presses, and relates particularly to a setting device for the head block.
The invention has for its primary object an automatic head block setting device which will be durable in construction and not liable to get out of order, and very efiieient in operation, the parts being so constructed and arranged that they may be readily applied to, or embodied in, a press of any ordinary or conventional type, and
which may be held in an inoperative posrtion until required, when the f operator, by a very simple movement, may so adjust the parts that upon the subsequent movement of the plunger apron, the device will act to antomatically transfer the head block from the condenser chamber into the baling chamber and into proper position in the latter. And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this class so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
tVith these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certam constructions, arrangements and combina tions of the parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the condenser chamber of a baling press equipped with the improvements of my invention, parts being shown in different positions in dotted lines. Flg. 2 (Sheet 2) is an endview of the apparatus. Fig. 3 (Sheet 1) is a top plan view of the trigger setting device. Fig. 4: (Sheet 2) 1s a similar view showing the trigger. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the trigger engaging lever, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the trigger.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in all of the views of the accompanymg drawings by like reference-characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the condenser chamber of a ballng press formed in one side with a feed opening 2 through which the head block 3 may be inserted into the chamber when desired, and 4 designates the baling chamber of the press 1n which the head block 3 is designed to be received when automatically transferred from the condenser chamber to thebaling chamber, as will be hereinafter specifically described.

This apron has secured to its rear end and to its under face two trigger supporting members in the form of longitudinally extending blocks 6, the same being laterally spaced from each other, as best illustrated in Fig. 1, and secured to the plunger apron 5 by belts or similar fastening devices, and the trigger 7 is pivotally mounted at one end in between said blocks, and is disposed longitudinally of the apron and movable in an opening formed therein, as shown, said trigger being preferably curved lengthwise, as clearly illustrated in the drawings, and pivoted near one end upon a transversely extending pivot rod 8, secured at its ends to the blocks 6.- The trigger 'Tis adapted to rest in its depressed and substantially horizontal position with its longer arm resting upon a transversely extending rod 9 secured to the blocks 6, in which position the other arm of said trigger will curve rearwardly and downwardly, as shown, preferably below the lower faces of the blocks; and in its upper position the trigger will project above the blocks 6 and the apron 5, and also be inclined slightly in a rearward direction, as best illustrated in Fig. 1, in dotted lines.
Secured to therear end of the condenser chamber 1 and preferably some distance be low the bottom thereof is a transversely elongated frame 10, and secured to the middle of this frame and extending rearwardly therefrom in a. substantially horizontal direction, is a substantially U-shaped bracket 11, bolted to the frame or otherwise secured thereto, and supported thereby. The bracket 11 supports and carries the trigger setting device, which consists, in the present embodiment of the invention, of a bail- 45 of will like member 12 pivoted at its ends to the side bars of the bracket 11 intermediate of the ends of the latter, as indicated at 13, and a lever let which is fulcrumed at one end upon a pivot bolt 15 that extends transversely of the bracket near the rear end thereof. Preferably, the lever 14 is curved or bowed longitudinally, as shown, and projects forwardly and upwardly and is designed to rest at its upper end upon a crossbar 16 carried by the bail-like lever actuating member 12, and the latter, like the lever 14, extends above the bracket 11, as best illustrated in Fig: 1. The lever raising member 12 is connected to one end of a wire 17 or cord or the like, which constitutes a link between said member and a hand lever 18 fulcrumed upon the framework of the press, and it is to be understood that 20 this link or wire and the operating lever to which it is connected, may be located on either side of the press, as desired. 1
From as much of the description as has preceded in connection with the correlated views of the accompanying drawings, it will be understood that when it is desired that the head block in the condenser chamber 1 be set or transferred from the condenser chamber to the baling chamber 4, in proper position therein, the operator will, through the instrumentality of the hand lever 18, pull upon the link 17 and thereby swing the lever raising member 12 upwardly and forwardlyto the full line position illus- 5 trated in Fig. l, thismovement of said member 12 manifestly raising the relatively free and rearwardly extending end of the lever 14, whereby the lever will be raised to and maintained at an elevation slightly 0 above the rearwardly and downwardly extending curved end of the trigger 7, with the latter in its substantially horizontal position. Consequently, as the plunger apron moves rearwardly, the rear extremity thereengage the lever 14: and be raised thereby to its set or operative position, while the continued movement of the apron in a rearward direction will engage the lever raising member 12 and throw it rearwardly T to the dotted line position illustrated in Fig.
1, so that the lever 14: will again be depressed and moved to its relatively inoperative position. Subsequently, that is, upon the following forward movement of the p plunger apron, the trigger 7 will engage the head block and move it forwardly out of the condenser chamber until it drops off onto the plunger apron and is caught on the end of the condenser bottom, as illustrated f 0 at 19. Then, when the plunger starts back again, the block is caught on this, abrupt end of the condenser side at 19, and the plunger apron upon which the block rests slides out from under the block which drops 5 into position in the baling chamber 4E. Up-
on this rearward movement of the plunger apron, the trigger 7 strikes a depressing member 20 which preferably yields in a forward direction to allow the erect trigger to pass thereunder but which, in the rearward movement of the trigger, will engage same and thereby automatically cause the lever to drop into its lower inoperative position with its longer arm resting upon the cross bar 9 above referred to, whereby the r trigger will be permitted to run back and forth, under a block placed in position, until said block is needed, when the operation will be repeated by the operator pulling upon the link 17 by the manipulation of the lever 18 before described.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a very durable, etlicient, and automatically acting block setting device for baling presses, which will not be liable to get out 35 of order or require any especial attention, and the parts of which are of such construction that they may be easily and cheaply made and readily applied to a press of any ordinary or conventional type without any material changes in the press structure.
Preferably some means are provided for preventing the trigger 7 from going too far back when it is raised; as, for example, the 5 transversely extending pin 7, best seen in Fig. 1.
What is claimed, is:
'1. In a baling press provided with a head block receiving chamber and a baling cham- 1 her, a trigger setting device carried by the press, a head block engaging trigger, means for reciprocating said trigger in a depressed position below the head block, and means for moving the trigger setting device to a position where it will be engaged by the trigger to cause the latter to move upwardly above the plane of the head block, whereby, upon the next movement of the trigger, it will engage the head block and move same from the receiving chamber toward the baling chamber.
2. In a baling press provided with a head block receiving chamber and a baling chamber, a trigger setting device including a vertically movable lever, a plunger apron mounted for reciprocating movement underneath the head block in the receiving chamber, a swinging trigger carried by said apron, a swinging bail operatively connected to said trigger raising member, and manually operable means connected to said bail for raising said lever to a position where it will be engaged by the trigger upon the rearward movement of the plunger apron and raise the trigger above the plane of the head block as and for the purpose set forth.
