To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that. 1, JOHN C. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Trucks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in lateral motion car trucks; and, to this end, it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indi cate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a car truck embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section, taken on the line m 12 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of one of the roller bearing plates and connected cross tie; and Fig. t is a view in section taken on the line 00* m of Fig. 2.
The wheels, ournal boxes, and side frames of the car truck are indicated respectively by the numerals 1, 2, and 3. The side frames 3 are supported from the journal boxes 2 by heavy coiled springs 4 which rest on the tops of the journal boxes 2 and are seated in pockets 5 formed in the end portions of the side frames. Each journal box 2 is mounted for vertical movement between two guide brackets 6 and 7, the former being cast integrally with the side frame 3 and the latter is detachable therefrom. A bolt 8 and sleeve 9 connect the lower ends of the guide brackets (3 and 7 below the journal box 2 and hold the same properly spaced.
Each side frame 3 is provided'with a cen tral bolster opening 10, located between the bolster columns 11 which connect and are integrally formed with the tension and compression members of the side frame. The bolster columns 11 have vertical wearing surfaces 12 for a bolster 13, the ends of which extend through the openings 10.
Resting on the tension member of each side frame 3 between the bolster columns 11 thereof is a lower roller bearing plate 14 having a pluralityof roller seats 15. In tegrally formed wlth this roller plate 1% .1S a'pair of depending stop lugs 16 longi tal, inwardly projecting angle brackets 17.
These angle brackets 17 are laterally spaced and their vertical flanges are turned upward and away from each other. By reference to Fig. 3 it will be noted that the brackets 17 are horizontally offset from the roller bearing plates to afford stop shoulders 18 which engage the bolster columns 11 at the inner side frame 3. These stop shoulders 18, together with the stop lugs 16 hold the roller bearing-plates 14. against horizontal movement transversely of the side frames 3, but permit the same to be lifted from the tension members of said side frames. The bolster columns 11, of course, hold the roller bearing plates against horizontal movement longitudinally of the side frames 3. The two roller bearing plates 14 are rigidly connected and hence the side frames 3, by a pair of angle cross ties 19. The end portions of each cross tie 19 overlap opposite angle brackets 17 and are rigidly secured thereto by rivets 20. The flanges of the cross ties 19 are turned the same as the flanges of the angle brackets 17.
Roller bearing seats 21 are formed in the endsof the'bolster 13 to receive rollers 22 mounted in the seats15. Tntegrally formed with the sides of the bolster 13 are stop lugs 23 adapted to engage the bolster co umns 11 and limit the endwise movement of the bolster 13 on the rollers 22. To give the required strength to the bolster 13 the central web thereof is bowed downward, and extends between and below the horizontally spaced cross ties 19, as best shown in Fig. 1.
Fromthea'bove description, it is evident that the roller bearing plates 14 and cross ties 19 rigidly connect the side frames 3 against lateral movement with respect to each other, but permit slight independent vertical movements thereof. The bolster 13 holds the roller bearing plates 1 1 seated on the tension members of the side frames 3, and the interlocking engagement of the lugs 16 and shoulders 18 with the side frames 3 holds the connected roller bearing plates 14 and cross ties 19 against horizontal twisting movement with respect to the side frames 3.
What I claim is:
1. In a car truck, the combination with side frames, of a roller bearing plate supported on each side frame, and a cross tie rigidly connecting the roller bearing plates to afiord a self-contained structure.
2. In a car truck, the combination with side frames, of a roller bearing plate supported on each side frame, a cross tie rig idly connecting the roller bearing plates, to afford a self-contained structure, and means interlocking the roller bearing plates to the side frames against movement transversely of said side frames.
3. In a car truck, the combination with side frames, of a roller bearing plate supported on each side frame, a cross tie rigidly I connecting the roller bearing plates to afford a self-contamed structure, and means interlocking the roller bearing plates to the side frames against movement transversely of said side frames, but with freedom for lifting movement therefrom.
4. In a car truck, the combination with a side frame, of a roller bearing plate supported on the side frame and having a bracket projecting inward from the side frame, and a cross tie secured to said bracket.
5. In a car truck, the combination with i a side frame, of a roller bearing plate supported on the side frame, a bracket on the roller bearing plate and having a stop shoulder engaging the side frame, and a cross tie secured to said bracket.
6. In a car truck, the combination with a side frame, of a roller bearing plate supported on the side frame and having a stop lug engaging the outer face of the side frame, a bracket on the roller bearing plate and having a stop shoulder engaging the inner face of the side frame, and a cross tie secured to said bracket.
7. In a car truck, the combination with a side frame, of a roller bearing plate supported on the side frame and having a pair of horizontally spaced brackets, and a pair of cross ties secured one to each of said brackets.
8. In a car truck, the combination with a side frame, of a roller bearing plate supported on the side frame and having alaterally projecting angle bracket, and an angle said bracket.
9. In a car truck, the combination with side frames, of a roller bearing plate supported on each side frame, a pair of horizontally spaced cross ties connecting the roller bearing plates, a bolster, and rollers supporting the ends of the bolster from the roller bearing plates with the intermediate portion of the bolster extending down between the cross ties.
10. In a car truck, the combination with side frames having their tension and compression members connected by bolster columns, of a roller bearing plate supported on the tension member of each side frame between the bolster columns, a cross tie rigidly connecting the roller bearing plates to afford a self-contained structure, a bolster with its ends extending between said bolster columns, and rollers supporting the bolster from the roller bearing plates.
11. In a car truck, the combination with .side frames having their tension and compression members connected by bolster columns, of a roller bearing plate supported on the tension member of each side frame between the bolster columns, a cross tie rigidly connecting the roller bearing plates to afford a self-contained structure, stops holding the roller bearing plates against movement transversely of the side frames, a bolster with its ends extending between said bolster columns, and rollers supporting the bolster from the roller bearing plates.
12. In a car truck, the combination with side frames having their tension and compression members connected by bolster columns, of a roller bearing plate supported on the tension member of eachside frame between the bolster columns, brackets on said roller bearing plates and having stop shoulders engaging the inner faces of the bolster columns, stop lugs on the roller bearing plates engaging the outer faces of the tension members, a bolster with its ends extending between said bolster columns, and rollers supporting the bolster from the roller bearing plates.
