exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference. being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this. specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of a reducing machine showing the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1 through the exhaust chamber. Fig. 3 is atransverse section enlarged showing the pressure roll and belt link. Fig. l is a side view showing the same.
The invention has relation to means for manufacturing filamentous biscuit of thin or wafer-like character, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of devices, as hereinafter set forth.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby a thin band of piled filaments can be pneumatically operated upon, to facilitate the deposit of wafer-like biscuit forms upon a receiver for baking.
In the accon'ipanying drawings, illustrating a. form of this invention, thele-tter A designates reducing mechanism whereby the grain, properly softened by water and cured, is reduced to filaments, which are piled in layer form upon a bandlike moving receiver B, whereon the layer-of piled filaments is somewhat compressed by means of a roller C, divided into biscuit form, and carried into a pneumatic chamber 1), wherein the biscuit forms are first held up by means of an exhaust, s at E and are then deposited The grain having been softened, oy soaking, boiling or stean'iing, and partially dried or cured to equalize the consistency of the exterior coats and interior portion. of each kernel, is carried to the reducing mechanism, which involves steel "rolls a, having small circumferential grooves, from which the material is discharged by small steel strips or fingers t, upon a moving belt or receiver B. Usually this belt is made-of links and is designed to have a movement of corresponding speed to that of the reducing rolls, so that the filaments of grain which are taken by the steel fingers from the grooved rolls are laid upon the receiver in band form and in parallel relation. These filaments are piled upon the receiver to a thickness sufiicient for the production of a thin biscuit or cracker, the hand of filaments produced be- 1ng from about 10 to 15 filaments deep. Qwmg to the limited number of filaments piled upon each other inthe formation of the band, it is quite open in structure and freely pervious to air, and means are employed to condense or close substantially the interstices of the band, as well as to decrease its thickness, to render the band capable of being lifted by the exhaust hereinafter referred to, said means consisting preferablv of a cylindrical roller G. In a n'iuchine of the character described, a movable carrier, means for reducing grain to filamentous form and depositing the same upon said carrier in a structurally open layer, means cooperating with said carrier to press the filaments together and substantially close the interstitial openings thereof, including a roller, pivotal arms carrying said roller, a lever upon the pivot rod 01 said arms, and upper and lower screws engaging the outer end of said lever for inierometric adjustment of said roller and to hold the roller fixedly spaced from said carrier, and an intermittent exhaust device for lifting the layer having its interstitial openings so closed, carrying the said layer forward and dropping the same.
