TIRE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that .I, ROLLEN E. STUMP,
a citizen of the'United States, residing at Fresno, 1n the county of Fresno and State .ing the ends of securing elements whereby the links of a guard are assembled with inner and outer coversti ips which cooperate with the guard.
Within the province of the disclosureto iiiiprov generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertainsv With the above and other objects in view whiclif will appear as the description proceedsg the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details 'of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed canbe made within the. scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing :--Figure 1 shows in side elevation a wheel equipped with the tire forming the subject matter of this'application, portions being successively 'brokenaway; Fig. :2 shows the invention in cross section; F ig. 3 is aplan showing a portion of the guard; Fig. 1 is a fragmental longitudinal section of the guard; Fig. 5 is a fragmental transverse section of the guard.
In carrying out the present invention ther is-provided a guard which is made of iron, steel, or some other suitable metal, the guard comprising a plurality of pivotally connected links and each link including a body 1. provided with knuckles 2 and having a recess 3 between the knuckles 2. At the opposite end of the body 1 of the link is formed a single knuckle 1. At one side of the body of the link there is a single knuckle 5 and opposite to the knuckle 5 is a recess 6, knuckles 9 being located at the ends of the recess 6. A pintle 7 connects the knuckles 2 and 1 of adjoining links. a pintle 8 connecting the knuckles 9 and 5, the knuckle 5 on one link being received in the recess 6 of an Specification of Letters Patent.

adjoining link, and the knuckle 4 on one llIlk being received in the recess 3 of an adjoining link. v
By the construction above described there willbe formed a guard comprisinga plurality ,of pivotally connected links. Those links which form the outermost edges of the guard may terminate in clencher beads 10 adapted to cooperate with clencher flanges 11 on a rim 12 carried by a felly 14. This specific means for connecting the guard to the rim is not insisted upon strongly, since the connected portions of the guard and the rim might be constructed otherwise than shown in the drawings, without jeopardizing the utility of the invention.
Applied to one face of the guard above described is an inner cover strip 17, and applied to the opposite face of the guard is an outer cover strip 18, the cover strips-17 and 18 being made out of leather, canvas, or any other suitable material. In the \body portion of each link and preferably adjacent the geometrical center of the body is formed an opening 15 through which passes a securing element 16 which may be a rivet, the rivets above described being engaged with the cover strips 17 and 18 to hold the same in place on the guard. Secured to the outer face of the outer cover strip 18 by cementing or otherwise is a casing 19 which may be made of rubber or a rubber composition. Secured to the inner face of the inner cover strip 17 is a facing 20 which may be made of canvas, leather or any other suitable material. ()ne edge of the casing :20, terminates as shown at 21 adjacent one set of the clencher beads 10 on the guard, the other edge of the facing 20 being prolonged to form a "ongue which, as shown at overlaps the edge 21 of the facing.
\Yithin the contour of the facing 20 may be located an inner tube 21 supplied with suitable inflating means 25, the tongue being provided with an opening :26 through which the inflating means passes.
A tire constructed in accordance with the invention may be assembled readily with the rim: it will possess the desired flexibility; and will be practically puncture proof. It is to be observed that the casing 19 and the facing 20 shield and protect the ends of the securing rivets 1G and constitute a means whereby the rivets are prevented from moving endwise or working loose. The ends of the rivets 16 are broadened to afford increased terminal bearing areas coacting with the facing 20 and with the casing 19.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 'Ina device of the class described, a guard comprising a plurality of plate-likemetal .hnks; means for pivotally connecting the links of the guard along their longitudinal and transverse edges; an inner flexible cover and an outer flexible cover applied to the devices and constituting an abutment for the outer ends of the securing devices; and a facing secured to the inner cover independently oi the securing devices and constituting an abutment for the inner ends of the securing devices; the links along the longitudinal edges of the guard extending .be-
yond the covers, the casing and the facing, and being provided with rim-engaging means independent of the covers, the casing v and the facing, the covers and the securing devlces serving to relieve strain on the means for pivotally connecting the links, and serving to retain the links in place-when said means are broken, the facing and the casing serving to retain the securing devices in place when the same are broken.
In testimony that I 'claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signa- Copies of this gatent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the commissioner of latentl,
