SPRING-DIE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Die Holders, of which the following is a'specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in dies of the character known as spring dies, and more particularly to an improved floating holder or head for such dies, the object of the invention being to provide an adjustable die holder of this character which will accurately close or adjust each cutting portion or gland of the die precisely the same distance from the work to be threaded, and in which holder the use of set-screws, etc., for holding the die in the holder is entirely eliminated and means provided which will positively hold all the cutting portions of the die equidistant from the work, so as to obviate all danger of the die cutting too small, or improperly, and which die holder is simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
In the method of adjusting spring dies been the practice to use a split collet for this purpose, but this has not been satisfactory, since it sometimes failed to close or adjust the cutting portions of the die the same distance from the work, and therefore'one cutting portion or gland would cut more or less than the others. It
has also been the common practice to hold the die in the holder by means of a set-screw,
the die entering part way into the holder, the bore of which is the same diameter as the die. This method has also been found very unsatisfactory, for the reason that it is apt to set or force one of the cutting glands or chasers down more than the others, thus causing the die to out too small, or improperly.
The object, therefore, of the present improvement is to provide an improved die holder or head in which vantages are entirely overcome and very eflicient means provided for holding and adjusting the die in said holder.

This improved die holder, in the embodi ment herein shown, comprises a cap 2 which is interiorly tapered at its front end, as at 3,
and interiorly screw-threaded at its rearend, asat 4, for connection with an exteriorly threaded adjusting member 5, which is countersunk on both sides thereof for purposes which will hereinafter appear. For holding the die 6, I have provided a split adjusting member or receiver 7 which. is split as many times as the die has cutting glands, and this receiver 7 is exteriorly tapered at its front end to oorres 0nd to the interior taper of the cap2. The rear end of the receiver Tprojects into the front countersunk portion or chamber of the adjusting member 5, and the rear end of the die 6 diametrically slotted, as at 8, for engaging the ends of a pair of pins 9 carried by the central or web portion of the adjusting member 5, and which pins project into the countersunk chambers at both sides of said adjusting member. The die stem or shank 10 is provided atits front'end with a flange 11, the diameter of which is slightly less than the diameter of the rear countersunk portion of the adjusting member 5, within which countersunk portion it is adapted to be located, and the thickness of the flange is also slightly less than the depth of said countersunk portion, so as to permit the stem to have a slight play or float Across the face of the flange '11 is milled a groove or slot 12, which is adapted to engage the rear ends of the pins 9 carried by the adjusting member 5, the Width and depth of the slot 12 being also, slightly the diameter and length of the projecting portions of the pins 9 which extend into this slot for the purpose, as hereinbefore stated, of permitting the stem or shank 10 to have a slight play or float. For holding the stem 10 in engagement with the adjusting member 5, I have provided an interiorly screw-threaded cap 13, having an opening 14 for the passage of the stem therethrough, and which cap is adapted to engage the rear end of the adjusting member 5, the front cap 2 and the rear cap 13 being both provided with radial openings 15 for engagement by a suitable Wrench.
The die is placed within the split adjusting receiver 7 with, its rear face flush with the rear face of the receiver. The rear end of the receiver 7 is then placed within the front countersunk portion of the adjusting. member 5, with the projecting portions of the pins 9 extending into the slot 8 in the rear face of the die, and the front cap 2 screwed on to the front end of the ad'usting member 5. The stem or shank 10 is then passed through the opening 14 in the rear cap 13, with its flange 11 resting on the inner side of the end wall of the cap. The cap 13 and adj ustin member 5 are then brought together, the tinge 11 of the stem 10 seating itself in the rear ountersunk portion of the adjusting member 5 with the ends of the pins 9 projecting into the groove or slot 12, and the cap 13 screwed on the rear end of the adjusting member 5. The parts are thus assembled as'shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and by screwing the cap 2 down on the adjusting member 5 the die is adjusted into proper relation to the work to be operated upon, with all of its glands precisely the same distance from such work.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided an improved die holder in which the die is positively held therein without the use of set-screws, etc., and in which the cutting'portions of the die are adjusted to precisely the same distance from the work, which is very essential to the proper cutting of the die.
I claim as my invention:
1. A spring-die holder comprising a split die-receiver, a spring die therein, and-a member encircling said split die-receiver and cooperating with the split portions thereof to position and hold the cutting portions of the die at an equal distance from the work, said receiver and member adjustable relatively to each other.
2. A spring-die holder comprising a split die-receiver, a spring die therein, and an adjustable cap cooperating with the split ortions of said receiver for positioning and holding the cutting portions of the die at an equal distance from the wor 3. A spring-die holder comprising a split die-receiver, a spring die therein, means inclosing said receiver and die, and means cooperating with said receiver and inclosing means for adjusting one of said parts relatively to the other thereby to adjust the cutting portions of the die.
4. A spring-die holder comprising a split die-receiver, a spring die therein, means inclosing said receiver and die, and means cooperating with said receiver and inclosing interiorly means for adjusting the split receiver and thereby the cutting portions of the die.
5. A spring-die holder comprising a split die-receiver, a spring die therein, a cap inclosing said receiver and die and having its front end corresponding in shape at the interior thereof to the exterior of the front end of said receiver, and means cooperating with said receiver and cap for adjusting one of said parts relatively to the other thereby to adjust the cutting portions of the die.
6. A spring-die holder comprising a split die-receiver exteriorly tapered at its front end, a sprin die therein, a -cap inclosing said receiver and die and having its front end tapered, and means cooperating with said receiver and cap for adjusting one of said parts relatively to the other thereby to adjust the cutting portions of the die.
7. A spring-die holder comprising a split die-receiver having an exteriorly tapered front end, a spring die therein, a cap inclosing said receiver and having an interiorly tapered front end, and means cooperating with said receiver and cap for adjusting the split receiver and thereby the cutting portions of the die.
8. A spring-die holder comprising a split die-receiver, a spring die therein, an adjusting member at the rear thereof, said diereceiver and adjusting member having one a chamber for the reception of the end of the other, and means cooperating with said receiver and adjusting member for adjusting one of said parts relatively to the other thereby to adjust and hold the cutting portions of the die.
9. A spring-die holder comprising a split die-receiver, a spring die therein, an adjusting member at the rear thereof and having a chamber for the reception of the end of said receiver, and means cooperatin with said receiver and adjusting member or adjusting one of said parts relatively to the other thereby to adjust and hold the cutting portions of the die.
10. A spring-die holder comprising a split die-receiver exteriorly tapered at its front end, a spring die therein, a cap inclosing said receiver and die and having an interiorly tapered front end and an interiorly threaded rear end, and an exteriorly threaded adjusting member adapted to cooperate with the rear end of said cap and split diereceiver for adjusting one of said parts relatively to the other thereby to adjust the cutting portions of the die.
11. A spring-die holder comprising a split die-receiver having an exteriorly tapered front end, a spring die therein, a cap inclosing said'receiver and die and having an interiorly tapered front end and an interiorly threaded rear end, and an adjusting memberhaving a chamber adapted to receive the rear end of said receiver and exteriorly threaded to cotiperate with the rear end of said cap for adjusting one cf sai parts relatively to the other thereby to adjust the cutting portions of the die. 12. A spring-die holder comprising a split die-receiver, a spring die therein, an adjusting member at the rear thereof, a stem at the rear of said adjusting member, said adjusting member and stem having one a chamber adapted to receive the end of the other, means for loosely securing said adjusting member and stem together, and means connecting said receiver and adjusting member and coiiperatin therewith whereby the cutting portions 0 the die can be adjusted.
13. A spring-die holder comprising a split die-receiver, a spring die therein, an adjusting mem r at the rear thereof, a stem at the rear of said adjusting member, sai adjusting member having a countersunk chamber adapted to receive the end of said stem, means for loosely securing said adjusting member and stem together, and means connecting said receiver and adjusting member and cooperating therewith whereby the cutting portions of the die can adjusted.
14. A spring-die holder comprising a split die-receiver, a spring die therein, an ad usting member at the rear thereof, a stem provided with a flange adapted to loosely fit within said adjusting member, means for securing said adjusting member and stem together, and means connecting said receiver and adjusting member and cooperating therewith whereby the cutting portions of the die can be adjusted.

The combination of a spring die having a slot across its rear face, a split die receiver having an exteriorly tapered front end, an exteriorly threaded adjusting member provided with a countersunk chamber at each end thereof and a pair of pins projecting into each of said chambers, a cap inclosing said receiver and die and provide with an interiorly tapered front end adapted to cooperate with the exteriorly tapere front end of said receiver and an interiorly threaded rear end adapted to cooperate with 50 said adjusting member for holding the rear end of said receiver within one of said countersunk chambers with the pins in said chamber projecting into the slot in the rear end of said die, a stem having a flange provided with a slot across its face, said flange adapted to loosely fit the other of'said countersunk chambers, and an interiorly threaded cap having an opening adapted to loosely fit said stem and adapted to secure said flange withinsaid chamber with the pins projecting into said last mentioned slot.

The combination of a spring die'comprising a plurality of split portions forming glands having cutting faces, a split receiver 55 for said die, a cap for the reception of said portions of the receiver split receiver, said cap and receiver having cooperating portions, and means cooperating with said split die-receiver and cap for adjusting the receiver relatively to the cap to cause the split portions of the receiver to adjust the cutting faces of the die relatively to the work.
17. The combination of a spring die comprising a plurality of split portions forming glands having cutting faces, a split receiver for said die, a cap for the reception of said split receiver, said cap and receiver having cooperating portions, and rotary means cooperating w1th said split die-receiver and cap for adjusting the receiver relatively to the cap to cause the split portions of the receiver to adjust the cutting faces of the die relatively to the work.
18. The combination of a spring die comprising a plurality of split portions forming glands having cutting faces, a split receiver for said die, a cap for the reception of said split receiver, said cap and receiver having cooperating portions, and threaded rotary means cooperating with said split die-receiver and cap for adjusting the. receiver relatively to the cap to cause the split to adjust the cutting faces of the die relatively to the Work.

The combination of a spring die comprising a plurality of split portions forming glands having cutting faces, a split receiver for said die, a cap for the reception of said split receiver, said cap and receiver having cooperating portions, means cooperating with said split die-receiver and cap for adjusting the receiver relatively to the cap and thereby the cutting faces of the die relatively to the work, and a stem connected with a part of said adjusting means to permit the die to have a floating movement relatively to said stem.
20. The combination of a spring die comprising a plurality of split portions forming glands having cutting faces, a split receiver for said die, a cap for the reception of said split receiver, said cap and receiver having cooperating portions, rotary means cooperating with said split die-receiver and cap for adjusting the receiver relatively to the cap and thereby the cutting faces of the die-relato the work, and a stem connected with a part of said adjusting means to permit the die to have a floating movement relatively to said stem.
21. The combination of a spring die comprising a plurality of split portions forming glands. having cutting faces, a split receiver for said die, a cap for the reception of said split receiver, said cap and receiver having 125 cooperating portions, threaded rotary means cooperating with said split die-receiver and cap for adjusting the receiver relatively to the cap and thereby the cutting faces of the die relatively to the work, and a stem connected with a part of said ad'usting means to permit the die to have a floating movement relatively to said stem.
22. The combination of a spring die comprising a plurality of s lit portions forming glands aving cutting aces, a split receiver for said die, a cap for the reception of said split receiver, said cap and receiver having cooperating portions, means cooperating with said split die-receiver and cap for adj usting the receiver relatively to the cap and thereby the cutting faces of the die relatively to the work, a stem for holding said die, and means between said die and stem for permitting the floating movement of the die relatively to the stem.
23. The combination of a spring die comprising a plurality of split portions forming glands having cutting faces, a split receiver for said die, a cap for the reception of said split receiver, said cap and receiver having cooperating portions, means cooperating with said split die-receiver and cap for adj usting the receiver relatively to the cap and thereby the cutting faces of the die relatively to the work, a stem for holding said die, and means between said die and stem for permitting the floating movement of the die relatively to the stem, said means comprising a pair of slots one carried by the die and the 3 other by the stem, and a pm or jecting into said slots and through said adjusting means.
24. The combination of prising a plurality of split portions forming glands having cutting faces, a split receiver for said die, a cap for the reception of said split receiver, said cap and receiver having cooperating portions, means cooperating with said split die-receiver and cap for adjusting the receiver relatively to the cap and thereby the cutting faces of the die relatively to the work, a stem for holding said die, and means between said die and stem for permitting the floating movement of the die relatively to the stem, said means comprising a pair of slots one pins proa part of a spring die com- I carried by the die and the other by the stem and a pm or pins projecting into said slots and through a part of said adjusting means, one of said slots having greater diameter than the diameter of said pin or pins.
