Application filed November 17, 1915. Serial No. 61,962.

Be it known that I, LEANDER S. LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Side Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Toy Wheel, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a noise producing toy of the barrow type and embodies a wheel and a handle whereby the wheel may be rolled along the floor or the ground.
One object of the invention is to provlde a novel means whereby a sound will be produced when the wheel is rolled, and, specifically this result is brought about by providing the wheel with a V-shaped tread, adapted to receive a marble or other roll1 ng element, and by providing the tread with transversecorrugations with which the rolling element contacts when the wheel rotates.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the wheel, a though adequately reinforced at its periphery, will have its resonance impairedto a minimum extent, this end being accomplished by spacing apart transversely, a pair of peripheral flanges which serve to strengthen and reinforce that portion of the wheel which comes immediately in contact with the ground.
Another object of the invention 1s to provide a device of this type which may be turned out at a trifling expense.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to whlch the present invention appertains.
With the above and other ob ects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the indisclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing :Figures 1 and 2 are side elevation depicting opposite faces of the wheel portion of the structure, the handle being broken away; 3 is a vertical transverse section, the handle being broken away; Fig. 4 is an elevation showing the grip portion of the handle.
The toy forming the subject matter of this application embodies a wheel ordinarily fashioned from resonant metal and embodying a pair of approximately parallel side members 1 of circular contour, formed at their outer edges with angularly-disposed, circular, approaching extensions 2 terminated at their peripheries in outwardly proecting, approximately parallel, annular flanges 3. One of the flanges 3 is supplied with a lip a bent over upon the other flange and clenched thereon, the lip 4 being provided at spaced points with notches 5, facilitating a bending of the lip. Attention is directed to the fact that, as shown at 6, the flanges 3 are spaced apart slightly, the distance between the flanges approximating one-sixteenth of an inch in the finished article. The extensions 2 of the side members 1 are supplied with transverse corrugations 7, forming projecting ribs on the inside of the wheel. Located within the wheel is a rolling element 9 which may be a marble, as many rolling elements being placed within the wheel as is considered expedient by the manufacturer. The side members 1 of the wheel may be externally embellished with stars 8, or in any other manner.
The invention comprises a handle 10 ordinarily in the form of a metal rod bent at one end to form a rectangular arm 11 on which the wheel is journaled for rotation, the arm 11 passing through the side members 1 of the wheel. An enlargement of some sort on the end of the arm 11 maintains the wheel on the arm for rotation, the enlargement preferably but not necessarily being in the form of a nut 12 threaded onto the extremity of the arm. The grip portion 14: of the handle may be in the form of a loop, the extremity of the loop being twisted into the body por-- tion of the handle as shown at 15.
The extensions 2 of the side members 1 form a V-shaped tread in which the rolling element 9 is lodged. When the wheel is rotated in contact with the ground, the rolling element 9 travels over the corrugations or ribs 7 formed in the extensions 2 and a noise is produced.
Especial attention is directed to the fact that the flanges 3 are not clamped tightly together, but are spaced apart'slightly as shown at 6. It has been found that when the flanges 3 are clamped tightly together, a solid circumferential rib is formed, which rib interferes with the resonant qualities of the wheel. Such a construction, however, is
avoided in the present invention since the flanges 3 are spaced slightly apart as shown at 6 and are connected at their extreme peripheries only, by the overbent lip 4E. The present invention, therefore, affords a reinforcement for the Wheel at its periphery, Without impairing the resonant qualities'of the Wheel perceptibly.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is:
1.. A noise producing to-y'of the barrow type and embodying a hollow Wheel and a handle Whereon the Wheel is journaled, the Wheel having a V-shaped tread provided with transverse internal ribs; and a rolling element in the tread and adapted to move across the ribs When the Wheel is rotated.
2. A noise producing toy of the barroW Copies of this patent may he obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of, Patents,
