ENVELOP-MACHINE.

citizen of the United States, and resident of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelop- Machines, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to machines for making envelops of various sizes and the object of thetl invention is to provide improved means for applying glue to the side flap of the blank that is stuck to the end fiaps and also in gluing the edge of the loose flap which is afterward used for closing the envelop.
A further object is to provide a gluing mechanism capable of convenient and rapid adjustment to ada-pt the machine to various sizes of envelops.
A further object is to apply glue to the envelop aps in such a way that it will be evenly distributed and without smearing the inner portions of the flaps or the body of the envelop, or applying so much glue that it would squeeze out between the iaps when pressure is applied thereto and cause the envelops, when stacked, to stick toget-her or present an unsightly appearance.
My invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims. 4
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of an envelop machine embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view l of the gluing mechanism, Fig. 3 is a partial plan view of the same, Fig. 4 is a side view of the sectional roll by means of which the glue is applied to one of the side flaps, Fig. 5 is a plan view of the same, Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view, on the line --m of Fig. 4, illustrating the manner of 4mounting the sections of the roll on the shaft, and the device for moving the Hap into contact with the glue points, Fig. 7 is a detail view in perspective, illustrating the adjustable feature of the roll sections with respect to one another, Fig. 8 is a detail view, showing the manner of mounting the glue points or plugs in the peripheries of the sections, Fig. 9 is a plan view of a gluing roll illustrating a modified construction, Fig. 10 is an end view of the same, Fig. 1l is a sectional View on liney--g/ of Fig. 10, Fig. 12is a detail view of an envelop blank, showing the glued edges of the side flaps.
In the drawing, 2 represents the feeding-- mechanism of the machine and 3 the mechanism for feeding, creasing and folding the end iaps of the envelop blank. j
4 is a secondary or supplementary feeding mechanism arranged to receive the blanks from the primary feeding and creasing mechanism and advance them in a direction at right angles substantially to their original movement. Near this secondary feeding mechanism I provide a gluing device for the blank, which forms the subject-matter of my present application.`
At the discharge end of the secondary feeding mechanism I provide creasing rolls 5 adapted to crease the blank lengthwise at the point where the side flaps are joined to the main portion of the envelop. Above these rolls the frame is provided with a cross bar 6 adapted to support brackets 7 between which a glue-pot 8 is suspended. A glue- -roll 9 is journaled in the frame of the machine and depends within a pan 10 which is preferably provided with a curved bottom 11 having holes l2 therein andadapted tov receive the roll 9. A scraper 13 is mounted on said pan and is adapted to bear on the roll 9 and prevent the accumulation of too much glue on the surface of the roll. The pan 10 is adapted to move back and forth in the glue-pot and is preferably operated by means of threaded rods 14 having adjusting nuts 15. A roll 16 is arranged to bear on the surface of the roll 9 and is carried by brackets 17, also supported by the cross bar 6. rllhis roll 16 contacts with the roll 9 and receives a suilicient amount of glue therefrom for application to the gluing points or plugs, as' will hereinafter appear.
18 and 19 represent upper and lower shafts on which pulleys 20 and 21 are secured. 0n thesepulleys or wheels feed belts 22 and 23 are mounted and between which the blanks are delivered from the creasing rolls 5. At this point in the manufacture of the envelop the end flaps 24 will have been creased and folded and after passing the creasing rolls 5 the - side flaps 25 and 26 will be creased, ready to have their edges glued preparatory to the last step in the manufacture of the envelop.
Mounted on the shaft 18 is a hub 24 provided with an arm 25 supportinga curved wing or plate 26. rl`his wing has an outer vloose gluing wing to apply a sulicient quantity of glue thereto to gum the sealing flap of the envelop. To insure contact of thls sealing Hap with the gluing surface I prefer to mount a stud 27 on the frame 28 to support a clamp 29 which is adjustable v lengthwise of said stud and also circumerentially with respect thereto, and `supports a pipe 30 connected with a source of air under pressure and extending under the gluing surface 27 and provided with a narrow slot 31 through which currents of air are blown to swing the loose flap 26. into contact with the gluing surface 27 and apply a suiicient quantity of glue to the edge of the Hap to insure the sealing of the envelop when used. @n the other side of the machine a similar device is provided for lifting the flapy 25. These pneumatic devices being substantially the same, l will designate them by the same reference numerals.

- Figs. 4 to 8 of the drawings, and which I will now describe in detail. 32 represents a sleeve, splined on the shaft 18 and adjustable longitudinally thereon by meansI of the set screw 33,` which operates against the spline to press it .rmly against the bottom of the groove of sha-ft 18. The hub 24 is also adjustable onl this shaft, so that the gluing devices may be moved nearer to one another or'farther apart, to adapt them-for envelops of different sizes; One end of the sleeve 32 -is provided with an annular flange 34 and the opposite end of the sleeve is threaded to receive a lock nut 35. Between this flange and lock nut I provide a series of segments 36 having hubs 37 provided with rabbeted edges 38 to allow the hubs to nest or interlock with one another on the sleeve 32. The hubs operate to hold the segments in place on the sleeve and allowr them to be rotated for the different adjustments of the gluing surfaces. The ends of blank meseta I. the segments are adapted to lap by one an- .receive glue from the roll 16 for application to the envelop liap,2 5.` These gluing plugs are preferably arranged, (as indicated in Fig. 5) in diverging rows running crosswise of the segments to adapt them for application of the glue to the edges of the flap. The segments are preferably provided with curved slots 42 to receive bolts 43 by means of which the segments may be held in their locked relation. Each set of segments has a locking bolt .so that all of the segments may be loosened on the sleeve for rotary movement and then by loosening one of the bolts 43 the segments secured together by that-bolt may be adjusted with respect to the corresponding segments, which are still held locked togetherv by the other bolt. am thus able to easily and quickly adjust the rows ,of gluing points toward or from each otherto adapt the device for different lengths of lap and dierent shapes thereof. The plugs 40 may be made of any suitable material, preferably? rubber, and will apply the glue to the edges of the flap, as indicated in Fig. l2.
ln Figs. 9, 10, and 1l I have shown a modified construction of the device for applying glue to the edges of the flap 25. rl'his device consists of a hub 44 mounted on the upper shaft 18 and provided with an annular flange 45 at one end, between which and a plate 46 secured by adjusting screws 47 to the other end of the hub, a series of segments 48Aare arranged. These segments are arranged in groups, as in the preferred construction, with a space provided between the adjacent ends of the groups, and this space is bridged by a series of rings 49 which are arranged between lthe abutting edges of the segments and extend' entirely around the hub, being held thereon by the pressure of the segments upon one another. v
Upon loosening the bolts 47 pressure on the segments will be relieved and they may be esJ roe
adjusted endwise between the rings to adapt the gluing points corresponding to those described 1n the preferred construction for the different sizes of envelop flaps. The outer segments are vpreferably made wider at the base to lit the recess in a portion of the flange 45 and an annular groove 50 in the face of the plate 46.
In the o eration of the machine, blanks .with folde end flaps are delivered to the scoring rolls 5 and the blanks creased lengthwise, thereby forming the side flaps. As the passes between the belts 22 and 23, the` side aps will be blown upward by the vcurrents of air in the pipes 30 and into contact with the gluing surface 27 and with the gluing points 40, whereupon a sufficient quantity of glue will be applied to the edges of the flaps to secure the iap 25 to the flaps 24 and complete the envelop while the flap 26 will seal the envelop when its gummed edge is moistened.
' I make no claim herein to the above described constructions of the devices for applying glue to the flap 25. Said devices are fully described and claimed in my copending.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the upper and lower feed belts for forwarding an envelop blank, of a gluing roll disposed near one edge of said belts, an angular wing having a gluing surface disposed near the opposite edge of said belts, means for applying glue j for yieldingly pressing said iiaps against said luing devices. j
3. he combination, with the upper and lower feed belts and pulleys and shafts therefor, of a gluing roll disposed near one edge of said belts, a winghaving an angular curved surface disposed near the other edge of said belts, means for applying glue to said roll and surface, and slotted pipes arranged beneath said roll and wing and adapted to direct ,air under pressure upwardly toward said roll and wing, for the purpose specified. The combination with pairs of upper and lower feed belts for forwarding envelop blanks, each blank having a iap projecting beyond theI outside lateral edges of one of said pairs of belts and on the opposite side thereof from said other pair of belts, a gluingrdevioe disposed in the path of said projecting ap, and means for yieldingly pressing said flap against said gluing device.
5. The combination, with the upper and lower feed belts and shafts and pulleys therefor, of a gluing roll mounted on one of said shafts near one edge of said belts, a gluing wing mounted on the same shaft near the other edge of said belts, means for applying glue to the surface of said roll and wing, studs mounted adjacent to said roll and wing, pipes having slots therein carried by said studs and adjustable thereon and communicating with a source of air under pressure, said pipes directing currents of air to said roll and gluing surface to hold the envelop iiaps in contact therewith.
6. The combination, with the upper and lower feed belts and pulleys and shafts therefor, of a gluing roll mounted to revolve near one edge of said belts, a gluing wing 'mounted to revolve near the other edge of said belts, said roll and wing operating to gum the longitudinal iiaps of an envelop passing between said belts, and means for applying glue to the surfaces of said roll and wing.
7. The combination, with an envelop feeding means between which the body of the envelop is fed, the side flaps projecting laterally beyond each edge of said feeding means, gluing devices arranged laterally with respect to said feeding means and between which said side flaps extend, and a pneumatic device for temporarily pressing said flaps upwardly into contact with said gluing device.
