l/Vurttemberg, in Germany, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Methods and Means for Testing Paper-Pulp, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a method of, and apparatus for, testing paper-pulp'at that stage of manufacture when it is withdrawn from the rag-engine, the character of the paper-pulp determining the kind of paper to be produced.
The method consists in pouring a certain quantity of the pulp to be tested into a container provided with a sieve, from which the water flows, more or less rapldly, lnto another container and thence into two separate collecting vessels, the variations in the quantity of water in the latter vessels determining the quality of the paper pulp.
Two suitable forms of apparatus for carrying the invention into effect are shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a front view partly in section of one formof apparatus, and Fig. 3 a side view partly in section of a modified form of apparatus.
The apparatus comprises a hopper a provided'with a detachable sieve b. The pulp is poured into the hopper a so that the water is separated from the fibrous matter, and drips more or less rapidly through the sieve 6 according to the character of the pulp, into the container 0. The said container has two outlets (Z and e, disposed at different levels and act in such manner that with slow percolation the water only flows out of the lower outlet (Z which is of small cross section, whereas with a rapid percolation only a part of the. water is able to escape through the small opening (1, the remainder passing off through the larger opening e. The water flows through the outlets d and 6 into separate collecting containers f and 'g, from which it is removed for measurement, so that the quality of the pulp can be determined. ,v
The two forms of apparatus shown in the drawing only differ in shape, the container 0 in Figs. 1 and 2 being in the form of a trough with its base inclined in one direcis in the form of a. cylinder, the funnel shaped lower part of which is provided with a discharge pipe 1' branching off at e. The action is the same with both forms of apparatus. To enable the position of the Whole apparatus to be correctly adjusted a pendulum h is preferably provided.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is v 1: An apparatus for testing paper pulp, comprlslng a hopper, a perforated bottom therefor, a container in communication with the hopper, a plurality of outlets arran ed in the bottom Wall of the container at di erent heights, and independent means for collecting the constituents passing from each of the outlets in the bottom Wall of the con tainer.
2. The method of testing paper pulp eonsistin draining off the water from said pulp into a receptacle having openings arranged at different heights and discharging into independent collecting vessels, the variations of the quantity of Waterin the vessels determining the quality of the pulp.
3. An apparatus for testing paper pulp comprising a hopper for the reception of the pulp, a perforated bottom for said hopper, a container in communication with the hopper having a plurality'of outlets passing through the walls thereof 'at different heights, and a collecting means in communication with said outlets.
4. An apparatus for testing paper pulp comprising a hopper, a. container below said hopper having a plurality of constantly opened outlets atdifierent heights arranged within the wall of the retainer, and sepa rate collecting means in communication with -said outlets.
5. An apparatus for testing paper pulp comprising a hopper, a perforated bottom therefor, a container having an inclined wall in communication with the hopper, a plurality of outlets arranged in the inclined wall of the container at different heights, and a collecting vessel in communication with each of said outlets.
6. An apparatus for testing paper pulp comprising a hopper, a perforated bottom therefor, a container below said hopper having two constantly opened outlets arin collecting a quantity of pulp,
passages therethrough and collecting means arranged below said outlets.
