To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALMOND R. RANOIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lima,-in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Printing- Cameras; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and. use the same.
This invention relates to photographic apparatus and has special reference to a device which is preferably termed an automatic printing camera.
One principal object of the invention is to provide a camera of this description wherein a device is employed which exactly shows the time of each exposure of the printing paper used to produce the usual positive, the device being of improved construction.
A second object of this invention is to provide im roved means for regulating the cut ting o of the actinic light rays from the sensitized paper until the proper time arrives for its exposure to such rays.
A third object of this invention is to provide improved means for holding the sensitized paper firmly against the photographic negative.
A fourth object of this invention is to provide improved means whereby the operation of the device will wind the clock attached thereto whenever the device is operated.
With the above and other ob]ects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel arrangements of details and combinations of parts hereinafter specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like char acters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure 1 is an elevation of the operators end of the device. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the operators end of the device with the tops removed. Fig. 1 is a detail section on the line 44 of Fig. 1 showing the spaced tension means. Fig. 5 is a detail section on a part of the line 55 of Fig. 1 showing the shutter operating and releasing mechanlsm.
In the present embodiment of the invention there is illustrated a box casing having sides 10 and a front or operators end 11 provided with an opening 12. The other end of the casing is intended to face an opening in alight proof screen and is provided with guides 13-a-rranged on the inner surfaces of the sides lO so that a frame 14 carrying a diffusion screen 15 may be slid vertically into and out of position in these guides. This diffusion screen is used for the purpose of diffusing the light admitted to the sensitized paper so that an even distribution of actinic rays is produced.
Surrounding the opening 12 is a frame 16 to the bottom of which is hinged as at 17 a presser plate consisting of a lower member 18 having an upper member 19 hinged thereto, as at 20. Each of these members is provided with a felt or other resilient cushion, as indicated at 21, arranged to press the sensitized paper 22 into position against the negative 23 and press the latter firmly against the frame, it being understood that the frame is rabbeted to receive the plate and sensitized paper as clearly shown in the drawings.
Atpresent it is to be understood that proper means are provided for forcing the parts 18 and 19 into position but the preferable means employed will be nowdescribed. Across the lower'member 18 of the presser plate is disposed a guide member in the form of a plate 24 hinged to the member 18 at its bottom edge as at 25. This plate is provided with grooved edges 26 for the receptionof the sides of a sliding frame 27 which is hinged to the member 19--at 28.
Across the upper part of the plate 24 extends a'bar 29 provided at its ends with screw eyes 30 to each of which is secured one end of a tension spring 31. These springs pass through openings 32 in the end of the box and are led around rollers 33 mounted in the box. Extending through the end of the box below the openings 32 are tension screws 34 provided with butterfly nuts 35 and connected to the remaining ends of the springs 31 by links 36. Thus by operating the but terfiy nuts 35 the tensions of the springs 31 may be regulated and this regulates the pressure of the plate 24 against the member 18 which in turn regulates the pressure of the member 18 toward the negative. Furthermore these springs also serve, through the medium of the slide frame 27 to force the member 19 toward the negative when the frame is slid upward in the plate 24..
In order to move the member 19 outward an afford access to the upper part of the negative and sensitized paper, this member is provided with a bar 37 extending across its upper part and having a finger loop 38 positioned intermediate its ends. By pulling outward and downward on this loop the member 19 will revolve about the axis of the hinges .20 while the slide frame 27 and plate 24 will assume the position shown in Fig. 4. When in this position the position of the member 19 is so nearly at a right angle to the slide that the friction between the slide and plate 21 is suliicient to lock the member 19 against closing without manual intervention.
Attached to one end of a bar 37 on the member 19 is one end of a spring 39 which passes through an opening 40 in the operators end of the box and runs over a roller 11. To the remaining end of this spring 39 is attached a strand 41 which runs over a roller 42 mounted on a lever 13 pivoted to a partition +3 arranged to form a pocket for one of the springs 31. A second partition 41 is fixed in the box in spaced relation to the partition 43 and serves to cut oil all light entering through the opening 40. The remaining end of the strand 41 is attached to a pin it projecting from one side of a screen 45 opaque to all actinic rays, the screen being hinged to the floor of the box as at 46 so that it can be raised to cut off the actinic rays when the member 19 is pulled open and the strand drawn upon.
In order to drop the screen 45 when the member 19 is closed the lower end of the lever 43 is forked as at 46* and straddles the pin 11. To the lever 13 is pivoted an arm -27 the free end of which is well weighted by lead weights 18. This arm is provided with hook 49 at its end and is arranged to hook over a pin 50 on the wheel 41. Pivoted between the partitions 13 and 4-1 is a sleeve 51 wherein slides a plunger 52 which is pivoted to the bar 37 so that as the member 19 swings in and out the plunger also moves in and out and thus engages the arm 47 and lifts the hook 49 clear of the pin 50, at the same time, by frictional engagement with the arm 47, giving the lever arm 43 an initial rearward movement so that the actinic screen 45 falls. It is to be noted that this falling movement is begun only a i'tcr the member 19 is closed and is resisted by air friction or resistance on its lower side so that it is gradual.
' To the bar is attached a flexible strand 58 which extends into the casing above a horitzontal partition 54 and around guide pulleys 55 and 56 and has its end wrapp around a disk 57 and connected thereto so that @the movement outward of the member 19 rotates this disk. To prevent shock and too great movement of the disk 57 a coil spring 58 is interposed, as shown, between the ends of the strand 53.. Wrapped around the disk and secured thereto is one end of a second strand 59 led through a guide 60 to a .clock winding pulley 61. fixed on the winding arbor (32 of a clock work mechanism 63 the (lGttlllgQf which are not deemed necessary to enter into at this time but which has a winding arbor of that type which revolves when the clock runs down. By this latter means the opening of the member 19 effects winding of the clock while the unwinding or running down of the clock rotates the disk 57 and tensions the strand 53 after the member 19 is closed.
In the front or operators end of the box is an arcuate slot 64 having a scale 65 concentric therewith, the scale being laid in suitable divisions such as seconds and fractions of seconds, a ointer 66 being attached to the disk 59 and projecting through the slot to indicate on the scale the movement of the disk.
The apparatus thus described is used as follows :The box or casing being positioned, as previously described, with its diffusion screen forming a window opening closure, the operator selects the desired negative to be reproduced. He then pulls down on the grip 38 and opens the member 19 after which he opens the member 18 by pulling on the finger grip (57 of a lever 68 connected to the member 18 at (i and pivoted to the front of the box as at 70. He then raises the bar 37 and introduces the negative after which he closes the bar 37 and slips a piece of sensitized paper between the negative and members 18 and 19. The outward movement or opening of these members 18 and 19 has, as described, closed the actinic shutter or screen 45 and wound the clock. \Vhen the members 18 and 19 are closed the clock starts, winding tension on the spring being released and at the same time the actinic screen opens. The operator now observes the pointer 66 and when this pointer has moved from 0 to the required time indication on the scale, again opens the member 19, which rewinds, resets, and stops the clock and at the same time closes the actinic screen. He then removes the ex posed sensitized paper and if desired, replaces it with another piece. This operation is repeated until the required number of exposures have been made from a given negative after which this negative may be removed and another substituted.
There has thus been provided a highly eificient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a casing including a negative holder, means adapted to press the sensitized paper against the negative, said means being hinged to the casing to swing toward and from the negative in the holder,
, connections, and a time scale wherewith the pointer cooperates to indicate the passage of time after the swinging means is moved toward the negative.

a clock work mechanism including a wind ing arbor, connections between the swinging means and arbor arranged to wind the clock when the means is swung away from the negative holder, a screen for non-actinic rays movable toward and from the negative holder, and an operative connection between said means and screen arranged to close the screen while the clockwork mechanism is wound.
3. In a device of the kind described, the
combination with a casing including a negative holder, means adapted to press the sensitized paper against the negative, said means being hinged to the casing to swing toward and from a negative in the holder, a-
screen for non-actinic rays arranged to swing toward and from the negative holder, and tension means including a flexible member arranged to draw the screen into position before the negative holder, said tension means being operated by swinging the first named means away from the negative holder, the screen being gravity operated in its opposite direction.
4. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a casing including a negative holder, means adapted to press-the Sensitized paper against the negative, said means being hinged to the casing to swing toward and from a negative in the holder,
a screen for non-actinic rays arranged to swing toward and from the negative holder, and tension means including a flexible member arranged to draw the screen into position before the negative holder, said tension means being, operated by swinging the first means away from the negative holder, the screen being gravity operated in its opposite direction, and elements operated by movement of the first means toward the negative holder and arranged to impart an initial falling movement to 'the screen.
' 5.".In a device of the kind described, the combination with a casing including a nega tive holder, means adapted to press the sensitized paper against the negative, said means being hinged to the casing to swing toward and from a negative in the holder, a
' posite direction, a releasable lock for holding the screen away from the negative, and
elements operated by movement of the first means toward the negative holder and arranged to primarily release the lock and thereinafter impart initial movement away from the negative holder to the screen.
6. In a device of the kind described a casing having a negative holder, a non-actinic ray screen .for the holder, a clock work timing mechanism, and means controlled by the screen for alternately locking and releasing said timing mechanism.
7. In'a device of the kind described, a casing having a negative holder formed therein and provided witli a movable covering device, a rising and falling non-actinic screen for the holder, a clock work timing mechanism, and means connected with the covering device and movable therewith for releasing said timing mechanism.
8. In a device of the kind described, a-

In a device of the class described comprising a casing, a diffusion screen mounted in one end of said casing, a frame secured to the opposite end of' said casing, said frame rabbeted to receive a negative and sensitized paper, a covering secured to said frame and bearing upon said negative when in a closed position, a non-actinic ray screen hinged in said casing, means for connecting said screen to the covering to raise and lower it according to the movement of said cov-- ering, a clockwork timing mechanism to indicate the time of exposure mounted in said casing, means for automatically winding said clock mechanism during the outward movement of said covering, and means for automatically releasing the clock mechanism when the covering has been returned to its closed position.

In a device of the class described comprising a casing, a diffusion screen mounted in one end of said casing, a frame secured to the opposite end of said casing, said f'ame rabbeted to receive a negative and sensitized paper, a bottom presser plate hinged to said frame, a top presser plate hinged to said bottom presser plate, tension means secured to the casing and to the bottom and top presser plates to hold them in a closed position and into engagement with the negative, a non-actinic ray screen hinged to said casing, means for connecting said screen to the top presser plate to move said screen according to the movement of said top presser plate, a clock work timing mechanism to indicate the time of exposure mounted in said casing, means for automatically winding said clock mechanism during the outward movement of said top presser plate, and means for automatically releasing the clock mechanism when the top presser plate has been returned to its closed position.

In a device of the class described comprising a casing, a diffusion screen mounted in one end of said casing, a frame secured to the opposite end of said casing, said frame rabbeted to receive a negative and sensitized paper, a bottom presser plate hinged to said frame, a top presser plate carried by said bottom presser plate, tension means secured to the casing and to-the bottom and top presser plates to hold them in a closed position and into engagement with the negative, a nonactinic ray screen hinged to said casing, means for connecting said screen to the top presser plate to move said screen upwardly and downwardly within the casing according to the movement of said top presser plate, a clock work timing mechanism to indicate the time of exposure mounted in said casing, means for automatically winding said clock mechanism during the outward movement of said top presser plate, and means for automatically releasing the clock mechanism when the top presser plate has been returned to its closed position.

In a device of the class described comprising a casing, a diffusion screen mounted in one end of said casing, a frame secured to the opposite end of said casing, said frame rabbeted to receive a negative and sensitized paper, a bottom presser plate hinged to said frame, a top presser plate hinged to said bottom plate, tension springs secured to the casing and to the bottom presser plate, a second tension spring secured to the casing and to the top presser plate, said tension springsproviding means for normally holding the presser plates in a closed position and into an engagement with the negative, a non-actinic ray screen hinged to said casing, means for connecting said screen to the top presser plate to move said screen according to the movement of said top presser plate, a clock work timing mechanism to indicate the time of exposure mounted in said casing, means for automatically winding said clock mechanism during the outward movement, of said top presser plate, and means for automatically releasing the clock mechanism when the top presser plate has been returned to its closed position.

In a device of the class described comprising a casing, a diffusion screen mounted in one end of said casing, a frame secured to the opposite end of said casing, said frame rabbeted to receive a negative and sensitized paper, a bottom presser plate hinged to said frame, a top presser plate carried by said bottom presser plate, a tension spring secured to the bottom presser plate, a roller journaled in said casing, said spring passed around said roller and secured to a bolt, means for adjustably securing said bolt to the casing, a second tension spring secured to the casing and to the top presser plate, said tension springs providing means for normally holding the presser plates in a closed position and into an engagement with the negative, a non-actinic ray screen hinged to said casing, means for connecting said screen to the top presser plate to move said screen according to the movement of said top presser plate, a clock work timing mechanism to indicate the time of exposure mounted in said casing, means for automatically winding said clock mechanism during the outward movement of said top presser plate, and means for automatically releasing the clock mechanism when the top presser plate has been returned to its closed position.

In a device of the class described comprising a casing, a diffusion screen mounted in one end of said casing, a frame secured to the opposite end of said screen, said frame rabbeted to receive a negative and sensitized paper, a top presser plate carried by said bottom plate, a tension spring secured to the casing and to the bottom presser plate, a bar secured to said presser plate, a second tension spring secured to the casing and to one end of said bar, said tension springs providing means for normally holding the presser plate to a closed position and into engagement with the negative, a non-actinic ray screen hinged into said casing, means for connecting said screen to the top presser plate to move said screen upwardly and downwardly within the casing according to the movement of said top presser plate, a clock work timing mechanism to indicate the time of exposure mounted in said casin means for automatically winding said 0100' mechanism during the outward movement of said top presser plate, and means for automatically releasing the clock mechanism when the top presser plate has been returned to its closed position.
16. In a device of the class described comprising a casing, a diffusion screen mounted in one end of said cas ng, a frame secured to the opposite end of said casing, said frame rabbeted to receive a negative and sensitized paper, a bottom presser plate hinged to said frame, a top presser plate hinged to said bottom presser plate, a bar secured to the bottom presser plate and extending transversely thereof, screw eyes secured to each end of said bar, tension springs secured to said eyes and to the casing, a tension spring secured to the casing and to the top of the plate, said tension springs providing means for normall holding the presser plates in a closed position and into an engagement with the negative, a non-actinic ray screen hinged to said casing, means for connecting said screen to the top presser plate to move said screen upwardly and downwardly within the casing-according to the movement of said top presser plate, a clock work timing mechanism to indicate the time of exposure mounted in said casing, means for automatically windinglsaid clock mechanism during the outward movement of said top presser plate, and means for automatically releasing the clock mechanism when the top presser plate has returned to its closed position.
17. In a device of the class described comprising a casing, a diffusion screen mounted in one end of said casing, a frame secured to the opposite end of said casing, said frame rabbeted to receive a negative and sensitized paper, a bottom presser plate hinged to said frame, a top presser plate hinged to said bottom presser plate, a pair of tension springs secured to the bottom presser plate and to the casing, a tension spring secured to the top presser plate and to the casing, said spring providing means for normally holding said presser plate in closed position and into an engagement with the negative, a partition formed in each end of the casing to provide a pocket for the reception of said pair of tension springs, a second partition in said casing in spaced relation to said partition and serving to cut out light entering through the opening formed by the tension springs entering the casing, a non-actinic my screen hinged to said casing, means for connecting said screen to the top presser plate to move said screen upwardly and downwardly within the casing according to the movement of said top presser plate, a clock timing mechanism to indicate the time of exposure mounted in said casing, means for automatically winding said clock mechanism during the outward movement of said top presser plate, and means for automatically releasing the clock mechanism when the top presser plate has returned toits closed position. 4

In a device of the class described comprising a casing, a diffusion screen mounted in one end of said casing, anegative holder secured to the opposite end of said casing, a cover hinged to said holder, tension means secured to the cover and to the casing to hold said cover in a closed position, a non-actinic screen hinged within said casing, a bar secured to said cover, a spring secured to the bar, means for attaching said spring to the screen to move it upwardly and downwardly within the casing, a clock work timing mechanism to indicate the time of exposure mounted in said casing, means for automatically winding said clock mechanism during the outward movement of said cover, and means for automatically releasing the clock mechanism when the cover has returned to its closed position.

In a device of the class described comprising a casing, a diffusion screen mounted in one end of said casing, a negative holder secured to the opposite end of said casing, a cover hinged to said holder, tension means secured to the cover and to the casing, a non-actinic screen hinged within said casing, a bar secured to said cover, a roller mounted in said casing adjacent the negative holder, a pin secured to the screen, a spring secured to said bar and adapted to pass over said roller, a pin secured to said roller, a strand secured to the spring and to the pin carried by said screen, a partition secured in said casing, a lever pivoted to said partition and provided with its lower end forked to receive the pin carried by said screen, an arm pivoted to said lever, and provided with a notched outer end adapted to engage a'pin carried by said roller to lock the screen in an upward or downward position, means for releasing said arm from engagement with the pin on said roller, a clock timing mechanism to indicate the time of exposure mounted in said casing, means for automatically winding said clock mechanism during the outward movement of said cover, and means for automatically releasing said clock mechanism when the cover has returned to its closed position.
