-reference'being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. A
This invention relates to improvements in draft arms for railway ears.
Anobjeet of the invention is to provide a draft arm for railway cars so constructed that a draft rigging employing coupler conneetingg,` key and vsupporting keys may be readily attached to and detached therefrom.
'nection therewith. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view laken substantially on the line 2--2 of Fig. l and Figs. 3 and et are vertical sectional views taken substantially on lines 3-1l and 4 4 respectively of Fig. l.
ln said drawing, lO--lO denote wooden conter sills of a var underframe; ll an end sill g v1i the end or bulfer block; 13-tlie tloor';
lift a body bolster; l5 sub sills and 16 a braon lingr angle iron interposed between the rear side of the body bolster and the adjacent ends of the sub sills l5,
Secured to the under sides of the sills lO-ltl are dra ft. arms A, eachof which consists of an 4elongated casting of generally T shape iii i'oss section and having,"l an upper wide horizontal flange 17 and vertical web 18, tho inner portion .of which horizontalA lla nge i7 is suitably connected to the eenter sills as by vertical sill bolts 19-19 and the outer sides ofthe llanges 17 are riveted lo the lower flanges 2U of channel beams 21 scoured to thel outer sides of the sills lO. As
clearly shown in Fig, l, eaehdraft arm is recessed at its front end, as indicated at 22,'
-so as to eatend beneath the bnffeiblock l2 and each draft arm is furthermore eitendcd r" rearwardly so that the rear end engages the body bolster., as indicated at 23. Each draft arni is also provided with three elongated, slots 24, 25A and 26, each4 slot being surround` ed by a. flange 2T to thereby strengthen the',V castings and also Itogire a wide bearing for the keys hereinafter descrihed.- To further' strengthen the casting, intermediate conL net-ting horizontal ribs-28 are provided between the outstanding flanges 27 and alsob.' rib 29 extending from the rear of lthe slot QG up to the top of the casting.
The draft riggii'ig which have shown', comprises a draw bar 30, front follower 31,.
rear follower 32, combined friction cylinder' and spring casing 33, friction devices 34, coupler, key 35, front supporting key 36,' which passes throl'lgh the slotted front' fol lower 31, rear supporting key 37, and a sub` stantially cylindrical casing 38 in whichthe followers, shell and friction devices are in'- closed and supported, said casing 38 being also provided with suitable, elongated slots for each of the keys 35, 36 and 37. As'will be understood, the case 38'is open at either end to permit the insertion of the followers,
spring etc., therewithin.
At their front ends, the channels l-l may be additionally secured to the center sills, and end sill by angle irons 33. (See rig. s).
l claim: l
lain an under-frame for railway ears, Y the' combination with wooden center sills having channel beams secured to the outer sides thereof, of draft arms, each=,draft arm havingl a horizontal upper flange' secured to. the underside of a sill'and'the lower dang@ of a ohannelyeach draft arm. having also a vertical web provided with elongated Slots therein.
2. ln a strncture of the character described, the combination with wood center- 'Y sills having reinforcing plates secured to the outer sides thereof, each of said plates belng provided at its lower end with an outturned flange, of draft arms, each' draft arrn having a horizontal upper flange and a ver tical web depending therefrom, `said draft arms being secured to said sills and anges of the reinforcing plates by securing devices -passing through the horizontal flanges of the draft arms, said draft arms being each provided' with means by which a .draftgear CARRIE G.
