Be it known that I, W 'ASLIE M. ROADES, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Ok mulgee, in the. county of Okmulgee and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Oil-Saver and- Sand-LmeiCap, of which the following is a specification.
By way of explanation it maybe stated that in the operation of drilling oil wells, a closure oroil saver is attached to the cas-,' ing head, around the cable, so soon as 011- bearing sand is struck, to the end that the oil When the may not flow out of the Well. drilling operation is continued, ultnnately, it becomes necessary tolbail-the Well, and then the oil saver or closure is detached from the casing head but is leftassembled with the drilling cable, the cable being hauled out of ,the well and a bailer being inserted. The bailer carries a sand line cap which is assembled with the casing of the well during the bailing process.
One object of the present invention is to provide a structure which may be adapted readily either to an oil saver or a sand line cap, to-the end that either of these elements, and particularly theoil saver, may be ing, a delay of minutes not infrequently remuch damage to surrounding land and crops. l n q Specifically, the inventlon consists in d1- viding the saver, so that it may be placed readily around the cable and 1n div1d1ng the bushing which is carried by the saver, so that the bushing may be placed on the cable and then be threaded into the saver.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel form of latch mechanism, whereby the constituent elements of the device may be connected, the latch mechanism comprising no parts which are loose or detachable and likely to fall into the well, thereby prolonging greatly the application of the structure.

Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, wherein the invention has been shown in the form of an oilsaver, the invention comprises, generally considered, a body 1. When the plates 24 are omitted the plates 2 and 3 are received inside the casing-head and the device is-held in place. by set screws (not shown) which come incontact. with the bevlarger sized casing heads thereby enabling one saver to take the place of two, the function of the beveled edges 26 of the plates 24 now being clear. The bolts or latches 15 are swung around until the same pass between the lugs 11 and then the nuts 17 are tightened up. It is to be observed that the nuts 17 need beloosened but slightly, and therefore the latching operation may be carried out with speed. Further, the nuts 17 cannot be detached from the bolts 15, owing to the presence of the cotter pins 18. As has been indicated hereinbefore, this latching up operation must be carried out rapidly and there must be no chance for any portion of the latching mechanism to be lost or deranged. The utility of the simplebut efiective structure above'described will therefore be manifest. The parts 19 of the separable bushing are then placed around thecable, the handle forming parts-19 coming into cooperation with each other whereupon the bushing is threaded down into the socket 7 as shown in Fig. 4, the packing 23 being put under compression.
Many of the essential and important features hereinbefore described in connection .with the oil saver may be resorted to in the I in Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8. Referring to these figures, the body of thecap is indicated at 27 and comprises base- portions 28 and 29, the necks being indicated at 31 and. 32, the neck 31 having lugs 33 and the neck 32 having lugs 34. A pivot element 35 connects the lugs 33 of each pair and upon each pivot element is mounted to swing-a bolt 361310- vided with a Washer 37 and a nut 38, the nut 38 being adapted to cooperate with the lugs 34. .The cotter pin which limits the movement of the nut 38 is shown at 39. The bore of the socket formed by the necks 31 and 32 being assembled with the bailer.
' Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A' device of the class described, comprising a base and an upstanding socket the base and the socket being divided to orm laterally separable parts; a latch permanently pivoted to one of said parts and mounted to swing transversely of the socket into and out of engagement with the other of said parts; a two part foot plate of greater diameter than the base; and means for removably securing the parts of the foot plate to the under faces of the'respective parts of the base, the latch constituting means for holding the parts of the base and the parts of the foot plate, respectively, in transverse alinement. I

A device of the class described, comprising a base, a socket upstanding from the base, and a foot plate applied to the under surface of the base, the foot plate being of greater diameter than the base, and the foot plate and the base being of substantially the same configuration to permit the base and the foot plate t conform to well casings of different sizes; the socket, the base and the foot plate being divided to form laterally separable parts; means for detachably securing the parts of the foot plate to the respective parts of the base; and means for holding all of said displacement.
