LIGHTING-RING.
T 0 all whom t may concern y Be it known that I, RUDOLPH HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lighting-Rings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the lighting rings used in wickless oil burners, as, for example, burners of the type shown in Patent No. 1,154,637, dated September 28, 1915.
As heretofore constructed, difficulty has been experienced with lighting rings on account of the fact that the upper edge of the ring has been uneven, thereby causing the flame to burn unevenly. Moreover, in the case of aqring constructed of a plurality of thicknesses of sheet material, an excessive amount of vapor has passedupwardly between the layers, thereby imparting undesrablequalities to the flame.
rIhe object of this invention is to produce a lighting ring having a smooth upper edge of uniform height, and vso constructed as to prevent an excessive amount of vapor from passing upwardly between the layers of which the ring is composed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a lighting ring embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
While the body 1 of the ring may be composed of any suitable material, it is herein shown as formed of concentric layers 2 of asbestos paper, the layers being held together in the form of a ring in any suitable manner, as by means of wire staples 3. rIhe upper edge of the body 1' is covered with suitable material, as, for example', a strip 4 of asbestos paper folded along its longitudinal Patented Aug'. center to span the upper edges of the layers 2 and lie at opposite sides of said layers, as shown in the drawings. 'Ihe folded strip 4 is held in place by suitable means, as, for example, wire staples 5.
In order to make the Vupper edge of the lighting ring smooth and'even, the upper edge portion of the ring may be moistened with a suitable liquid,.as water, vand the ring inverted into a suitable mold or form, whereby the loose iibers are flattened down and the edge of the ring made smooth, round and of uniform height. After the water has evaporated the ring is ready for use.
It will be seen that the folded strip 4 prevents the passage of an excessive amount of vapor upwardly between the layers 2.
I claim as my invention:
1. A lighting ring for wickless oil burners comprising a body in ring form consisting of a plurality of concentric layers of sheet material, and a strip of asbestos in sheet form folded over the upper edge of said layers and secured to the body and covering the upper edge and the upper portion of the inner and outer sides of the body.
2. A lighting ring for wickless oil burners comprising a body in ring form consisting of a plurality of concentric layers of asbes- -tos in sheet form, a strip of asbestos in sheet form folded over the upper edge of the body and covering the upper edge and the upper f portion of the inner and outer sides of the body, and devices for securing said strip to the body, said devices being located wholly below the upper edge of the body.
