THOMAS F. WALDEN, OF SHAWNEE, OKLAHOMA.
NUT-LOCK.
Application filed June 4, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. l/VALDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shawnee, in the county of Pottawatomie and State of ()klahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to nut locks and has for its primary object to provide a nut lock of improved and simplified construction embodying essentially a lock element removably seated in a groove formed in the outer face of the nut and means for rigidly and removably securing the locking element in adjusted position.
YVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents an end elevation of the improved nut lock. Fig. 2 represents a fragmental longitudinal sectional view through the nut lock, and Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the locking element removed.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates a fragment of an externally screwthreaded belt of the usual or any preferred construction having a plurality of longitudinal recesses 01' grooves 6 extending inwardly from the screwthreaded terminal thereof.
A nut 7 is fitted upon the externally screwthreaded extremity of the bolt 5 and is formed in its outer face with an oblique groove 8, which communicates centrally with or intersects the internally screwthreaded bore 9 and terminates centrally of two of the adjacent side'faces thereof. The locking element designated generally by the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1916.
Serial No. 32,120.
numeral 10 is removably seated in the groove 8 and is formed upon its inner longitudinal edge with a laterally projecting extension or tooth 11 adapted to engage within one of the longitudinal grooves 6 in the bolt. The opposite ends 12 of the locking element are preferably beveled so as to terminate flush with the side surfaces of the nut 7 and permit a snug fit of the jaws of a wrench upon the nut.
An internally screwthreaded aperture 13 is formed transversely through the nut 7 and at a point adjacent the center of the groove 8 and receives the threaded shank 14 of a securing screw having an eccentrieally disposed head 15 adapted to overlie the central portion of the locking element 10 and engage within a notch 16 formed therein to lock said locking element in adjusted position upon the nut. The terminal of the aperture 13 is enlarged to permit the head 15 to swing outwardly and thereby release the locking element.
What I claim is:
In a nut look, a nut'having a transverse bolt-receiving bore and an oblique groove in the outer face thereof intersecting said bore and terminating centrally of two of the adjacent side faces thereof a locking element removably seated in said groove having beveled ends terminating flush with the side faces of the nut and including a laterally projecting tooth projecting into said bore, said locking element having a recess formedin the edge opposite said tooth, a screw threaded shank fitted in said nut and arranged in parallel relation to said bore, and an eccentric head on said shank adapted to engage in the recess in said locking element to lock the latter against removal and movably outwardly to release said locking element.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS F. VVALDEN.
