To all whom, it' may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. BOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State 'of Pennsylvania, have invented a new vanduseful Spark-Plug, of which the followingisla, specification.
My present invention consists of a novel construction of a spark plug in which the! parts ara-constructed and assembled in a novel' manner and wherein the insulation is of'su'ch nature that it is not liable to'become injured or broken when the spark plug is being assembled with respect to the cylinder or removed therefrom.

Referring to the drawings. l designates the body portion of a spark plug embodying my invention, and comprising a tubular casing having at its forward endthe extcriorly threaded portion 2 which preferabiy tapers toward the forward end of the body portion. l
3 designates the negative electrode having the end portions connected with the forward end of the body portion 1 and'prefcrably at points diametrically opposite each other. The central or laterally extending portion of the negative electrode is preferably deflected so that it is slightly ol` center, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 4.
5 designates the positive electrode which is centrally arranged with respect to the bore 6 'of the body portion l and near its lower end it is provided with a threaded portion 7, and above such portion it is provided with'a threadedA portion 8, such threaded portions 7 and 8 having threads ofdi'erent pitch or character. For example in the form illustrated, the threaded portion 7 is provided with left-hand threads while the portion 8 is provided with right-hand threads. I A f 9 designates an 'insulating member which preferably consists of va plug. or block of heat resisting composition which is provided with an aperture 10 extending longitudinally therethrough and through which the central electrode 5 is adaptedto pass. The forward end of the-insulating member 9 is recessed, as at ll, in order to receive `a nut 12 having its threads adapted to engage with the threaded portion 7.
13 designates a nut carried by theI central electrode 5 and adapted to engage the threaded portion 8:7 whereby the central ,electrode 5 may be, readily adjusted with respect to the insulating member 9 and this also serves to adjust the central positive electrode with respect to the negative electrode as will hereinafter' more clearly appear.

t2@ designates a rap which serves to reinforce the outer end of the insulating member 14 and which is apertured to permit the central eleetrede to pass through it.
21 designates a nut in threaded engagement with the threaded portion S of the oentral electrode and abutting against the end of which is exteriorly threaded, as at 25,
and such threaded portion 25 is in engagement with the interiorly threaded portion' of a cap nut 26. This cap nut 26 is fixed with respect to the sleeve 24, the coacting threaded portion of such member preferably being slightly tapered to effect this result. The cap nut 2G has its forward end exteriorly threaded in order to engage the interiorly threaded portion 9.7 of the body portion 1.
28 designates a gasket between the insulating member 9 and the cap nut 2G. and sleeve 24, and the forward face of said gasket is preferably coated with asbestos or similar material which is pressed against the rear end of the insulating member 9. Interposed between the forward portion of the insulating member 9 and the cylinder 29 of the body portion 1 is one or more gaskets 30, and the face next to the insulat- -ing member 9-is preferably coated with asbestos or similar material.
The forward end of the insulating member 14 Vis preferably chamber-ed as 'at 31 in order to receive the nut l13.l In the present instance in order to increase the insulating area of the member 9 1 have shown it as provided with a forward extension 32 but it will be apparent that this may be dispensed with if desired and substantially the same results attained by extending the recessed portion 11 a farther distance toward the rear end' of the insulating.,r member 9.
The spark plug can be readily taken apart when desired by removing the vcap nut 2G whereupon the central electrode 5, the outer insulating member 14 and the inner insulating member 9 and their adjuncts are bodily removed as a unit. When it is desired to longitudinally adjust the central electrode 5 in order to vary the distance of its forward end relative to the negative electrode, the nuts 2.2 and 21 are loosened whereupon the central electrode and the inner insulating member 9 are removed as a unit. The nut 13 is then loosened and the central electrode 5 rotated in the proper direction to adjust its forward end with respect to the insulating member 9. The nut 13 is then tightened and the parts are assembled as hereinbefore set forth.
In my present invention l have eliminated the necessity of employing any fragile or easily breakable material such as porcelain, since the outer insulating member 14 is preferably constructed of a solid piece of tibe'ry of insulating material which is not easily broken and which will not be injured by being accidentally hit by a hammer or Wrench. The insulating member 9 which is vised a novel and useful construction of a spark plug which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and'described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in, various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its anvantages.
Having thus described myinventiomwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A spark plug, comprising an insulating body of liber, a metal sleeve surrounding said body, a plug at the forward portion of said body, an electrode longitudinally adjustable with respect to said body and plug, said electrode being carried by said plug and removable as a unit of structure with said insulating body and plug, means to secure said electrode in its adjusted position,a body portion, an electrode carried thereby, and means engaging said sleeve and body portion to secure said insulated body with respect to said body portion, said metal sleeve extending` outwardly beyond said sleeve engaging means to form a protection for the insulating body of fiber.

3. In a spark plug, an insulating body, a sleeve on said body, an electrode extending through said body and having threads of di'erent pitch thereon, nuts to engage the different threads, an insulating member through which said electrode passes and located between said nuts, whereby said member may be longitudinally adjusted on said electrode and means carried by said sleeve to fix said electrode with respect to Said insulating body.
4, In a spark plug, a body portion, an insulating body, an electrode passing therethrough, an insulating member carried by said electrode, a sleeve fixed to the forward portion of said insulating` body7 and a nut fixed to said sleeve and engagingr said body portion to secure said insulating body and insulating member in position, said sleeve evtending outwardly beyond said nut to forni a protection for said insulating body.
5. ln a spark plug, an outer insulating body of fiber having an aperture extending longitudinally therethrough, a positive eleotrode extending through said aperture and having a thread thereon, the thread at one. end of said electrode being of a different pitch. from the thread at the opposite end thereof, nuts engaging said threads, an insulating member having an aperture through which said electrode passes and located between said nuts, said nuts servingr to eeet the longitudinal adjustment ot said eleotrode and insulating member, means to tix said electrode with respect to said insulating body, a body portion adapted to receive said insulating,r member and said electrode, a negative electrode carried at the forward end of said body portion, and means carried by said insulatingr body to secure it with respeet to said body portion.

7.
