FIXING DEVICE FOR GLASS VESSELS TO BE GROUND.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAURICE MATHY, a subject of the King of Belgium, residing at 28 Rue Leopold, Flmalle Grande, Belgium, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fixing Devices for Glass Vessels to be Ground; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked therein which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a device for automatically securing glasses, cups and other glass vessels which are to be ground in such a position that the plane of the base of the vessel is quite horizontal, that is to say parallel to the face of the grindstone of the machine used for grinding the upper rim of said vessels. The securing fixture is adapted to be used in combination with machines of the type in which the grindstone is movable vertically while the vessel to be ground remains stationary.
The main feature of this device is the use of a horizontal plate on which the vessel is arranged or supported and adapted to be secured at any required height at the end of a vertical post on which is slidably mounted a sleeve that is caused to move upward by a weight arranged on a lever. A number of arms are jointed to said sleeve and the outer ends of said arms are joined each to a gripping lever pivotally mounted in bearings fixed to the post; there are usually three levers arranged at 120 one from the other. The gripping levers are provided at their ends with buffers or grippers which are brought into contact with the vessel to' be secured when the sleeve is caused to move upward on the post. Means are also provided for varying at will the point of the lever to which the corresponding arm is jointed and the position of the pivot of the lever. When glasses with very inclined sides are to be fixed, the invention also consists in providing the use of a stanchion, the one end of which is brought into contact with the foot of the glass while the other end is jointed to the fixing lever at a point chosen between its pivot and its buffer.
The accompanying drawings represent, by way of example, two preferred embodiments of the invention.
Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of an embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a corresponding plan; Fig. 3 is a partial elevation of a modified embodiment of the invention; Fig. a shows a detail on an enlarged scale of one of the gripping levers.
Inthe first form of the invention as represented in Figs. 1 and 2, the glass 1 to be ground is arranged on a horizontal supporting plate 2 securely mounted upon a vertical shaft 3. This shaft is adapted to slide loosely in a cylindrical hollow of the post 4, which is fixed to the base-plate 5. The plate 2 can be fixed at any required height by means of a set screw 6. Upon the post a is slidably mounted a sleeve 7 provided with three cars 8 arranged at 120 from each other; a fiat rod or arm 9 is j ointed to each ear 8 and the other end of these arms is provided with a hole adapted to re ceive a removable bolt 18 with the purpose of joining the end of the rod to a gripping lever. Each of these three levers consists in a rod 10 in which regularly spaced holes 11 are bored. The end of each lever is pro vided with a buffer or gripper comprising a thin rubber piece 12 secured to a spring plate 13 riveted upon a fork 141; this fork is jointed to the end of the lever 10 by means of a bolt and thumb-nut 15, in such a manner that the buffer is allowed to be applied convenientlyagainst the glass to be fixed. Each lever 10 is j ointcd to an ear 16 fixed to the post 4, by means of a bolt 17 arranged in one of the holes 11.
The sleeve 7 is provided with two pins 19 which are supported by an operating lever 21 terminating in a fork 20, the two arms of which are provided with a hook in which the two pins 19 are arranged. The operating lever 21 is pivotally mounted at 23 in a fork 22 fixed to the base plate 5. The sleeve 7 is caused to slide upward on the post 4 by a weight 2a, the position of which on the lever 21 can be varied at will.
When a glass is to be fixed in the device, the lever 21 is raised by the workman; the sleeve 7 slides down by the action of its own weight and the three grippers 12 are turned on their pivots away from each other. The glass 1 is then arranged on the plate 2 and the lever 21 is released; the sleeve 7 is then raised by the action of the weight 24 so that the grippers 12 are pressed against the glass to be ground. The second embodiment of the invention, illustrated in Fig. 3 is used when the glass to be worked has very inclined sides 25. In such a case, the pressure exerted by the grippers 12 on said sides tends to raise the glass. This inconvenience is avoided by means of three little stanchions jointed at 26 to each of the gripping levers 10; the lower part 27 of each stanchion is adapted to slide in the hollow interior 28, of the upper socket shaped part 29 and to be secured to said upper part in any required position by means of a set screw 30. The lower end of the part 27 is provided with an elastic buffer or gripper 31, the construction of which is similar to that of the grippers 12; these three buffers 31 are applied against the upper surface of the foot 32 of the glass. The other parts of the device are similar to the corresponding parts of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2'. It will be seen that when the grippers 12 are driven nearer to each other so as to be pressed against the body of the glass, the grippers 31 of the stanchion 27 are at the same time moved into engagement with the foot 32 of the glass in such a manner that the glass is prevented from being raised by the pressure exerted by the buffers 12.
It is easy to adapt the devices as. above described to vessels of different shape and dimensions; it is only necessaryto adjust and secure the plate 2 at the suitable height and to arrange the two bolts 17 and 18 in two of the holes 11 suitably chosen. In the case of the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 3, it is also necessary to adjust the length of the stanchions 27.
What I claim is 1. In a device for securing glass vessels during the grinding thereof, the combination of a post, a supporting plate capable of adjustment on said post, a sleeve slidably mounted on said post, a plurality of arms pivoted to said sleeve, a plurality of gripping levers adjustably pivoted to said post, grippers pivoted to the ends of said levers, adjustable pivotal connections between said arms and levers, and means for displacing said sleeve to cause the grippers to engage with or release the glass vessel.

In a device for securing glass vessels during the grinding thereof, the combination of a post, a supporting plate secured at a suitable height upon said post, a sleeve slidably mounted on said post, arms jointed to said sleeve, ears fixed to the post, gripping of the pivot of the levers, two pins provided on the sleeve, an operating lever turning on a fixed pivot, a fork provided at the end of said operating lever, the two arms of which fork terminate in hooks in which the two pins are arranged, and a weight. slidably mounted on the operating lever. 3. In adevice for securing glass vessels during the grinding thereof, the combination of a post, a supporting plate secured at a suitable height upon said post, a sleeve slidably mounted on said post, a plurality of arms jointed to said sleeve, ears fixed to the post, gripping levers pivotally mounted 011 said ears andjointed to the end of the aforesaid arms, grippers jointed to the end of the gripping levers, means for varying at will the point of the lever to which the corresponding arm is jointed, means for varying the position of the pivot of the levers, a stanchion'jointed to each of the gripping levers between the pivot of the lever and its buffers, an elastic gripper provided at the end of saidstanchion and adapted to be applied against the "foot of the vessel to be ground, means for varying the length of said stanchion and means for moving the sleeve on the post with the purpose of causing the grippers of the gripping levers to be removed from or driven nearer to each other.
