EMPTYING-FAUCET FOR MILK AND THE LIKE CANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 15, 1915. Serial No. 55,978.
in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates generally to improve--- 'ments in emptying faucets for milk and the like cans, and it consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of parts and details of construction. as hereinafter first fully set forth and described and then pointed out in the claims.
The particular aim of this invention is to produce an easily insertible and an easily removable faucet for condensed milk cans, svrup cans, and the like, which faucet' is essentially self contained and requires no external extraneous means to maintain the same in operative position; which may be inserted into the can by means forming a part of the appliance piercing the top of a can, and other means on said appliance whereby a tight oint between said appliance and the pierced opening in the top of the can is secured.
In the drawing already referred to, which serves to illustrate my said invention more fully, Figure 1 represents a side elevation in the act of being caused to pierce a can top. Fig. 2 illustrates the same as in operat ve position upon a can. Fig. 3 is a plan of Fig. 2 on an enlarged scale. Fig. 1 is a vertical section in line +l of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan of a fragment of the top of a can, disclosing the substantial contour of the pierced opening produced by my appl ance. 'Fig. 6 is a section in line 6+6 of Fig. 1, the can however. in Fig. 1 being omitted for clearness of detail. Fig. 7 is a vertical section in line 7 7 of Fig. 4;
Like parts are designated by corresponding symbols or characters of reference in all the figures of the drawing.
My invention consists of an essentially integral member A, preferably composed of a metallic forging or casting or the like and possessed of a longitudinal shank 10, from one end of which depends an integral handle or stem 11, while the opposite end of said shank terminates in an enlarged body B. This body B has a forwardly projecting spout 13, and a like projecting jaw 14, there being an open throat 12, between the spout and the jaw, said spout and jaw being connected by'the said body, and a reduced neck 25. In the lower face of the jaw 14 is milled a deep, longitudinal groove 15 extending throughout the length of the jaw, there being side walls 20 and 21 for the jaw formed by said groove. Formed in the interior of the spout 13, the body B, and the reduced neck 25, is a passage way 15, extending from the spout into the groove 15*, thereby establisliing communication from the exterior of the jaw It to the exterior of the spout 13, in an ev dent manner. The jaw 14:, as seen in Fig. 6, is possessed of a rounded and pointed end 16, to facilitate the penetration of the aw 14 through a top 17 of a can 18. The lower edges of the side Walls 20 and 21 of the jaw 14 is arcuate as seen at 19, the outer edges of which Walls have sharp square corners 20 and 21 whereby when the pointed end of said jaw 14 is caused to penetrate a can top 17 or the like, and the member A rotatedin the direction of the arrow pointer in Fig. l, the edges 20 and 21 of the walls20 and 21, will cut an openingin said top corresponding to that shown at 22in Fig. 5, the material removed by said piercing and'ciitting process being caused to bend backwardly within the can 18 as seen in Fig. 1
'As the rotation of the member A continuesaintil it is in a horizontal position, as seen in Fig. 4, the material removed by the piercing and cutting process will be forced to bend to an extent until it lies substantially flat against the inner face of the top 17, as seen at 24 in Fig. 4. The jaw 14: being connected with the body of the member B loya reduced neck 25, there is formed at the upper end of the walls 20 and 21 a shoulder 26 which shoulder is adapted to impinge against the inner face of the can top 17 at the doubled over portion 2& thereof as readily seen in Fig. 4. And when said shoulder is in enforced contact against said doubled up portion 24, my device is so arranged that the end 16 of the jaw 14 is also in enforced contact with the inner face of the can top 17. Surrounding the reduced'neck 25 of the head B is a thick yielding washer 27,
such as of rubber and the like, which washer is adapted to enforce thecontact of the shoulder 26 and the end 16 of the lower jaw 14, with the inner face of the top 17 of the can in a manner easily understood.
The passageway 15 already referred to terminates at the upper face of the spoutli, and in order to close this opening, I provide a hinged spring pressed closure'30, having an extension 31, located on the opposite side of the hinge 80*, whereby upon the application of pressure to the said extension the closure. may be opened and the outflow of liquid from within the can 18 is permitted.
v It is now to be explained that the washer 27 serves the purpose of enforcing the contact of the jaw 14 and the shoulder 26 against the inner face of the can top.
I have hereinbefore disclosed the preferred mode of practising my invention, but
I reserve the right to make such and any changes as might occur to one skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, or to make any and all such alterationsas may be permitted under the doctrine of equivalents.
'Having thus fully described my invention I claim as new, and desire to secure to myself by Letters Patent of the United States 1. An articleof the class described, including a spout,,a jaw in spaced relationship with said spout, said jaw having a pointed cutting edge and arcuate lower edges there being an open throat between said spout and said jaw; a body in connection with said spout, said body having a reduced neck connected to said jaw, there being a longitudinal groove throughout said jaw in the lower member extending from said body; a yielding Washer on said neckfand a closure for said spout, there being an interior passage in said body, said passage connecting said groove and said spout.
2. An article of the class described, including a spout, a jawin spaced relationship with said spout, there being an open throat between said spout and said jaw; a body in connection with said spout, said body having, a reduced neck connected to said jaw, there being a longitudinal groove throughout said aw in the lower face thereof, said jaw having a pointed end and depending side walls, said side walls having arcuate lower edges; a handle member, said handle member extending from said body; a yielding washer on said neck, and a closure for said spout,there being an interior passage in said body, said passage connecting said groove and said spout. Y 3. An article of the class described, comprising, an integrally-formed body; a handle, a spout, a jaw, and a reduced neck, there being an open throat between said spout and said aw, said aw having a longitudinal groove in its lower face, said jaw having a pointed cutting edge and arcuate lower edges, said body and said reduced neck having an interlor passage connecting said spout and said groove, there being an opening in said neck, a yielding washer for said neck closing said openinggand a closure for JOHN c. SARTER.
