To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HANS O. RoIsUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morrisonville, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension Bob-Sleighs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in bob-sleds.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of bob-sleds and to provide a simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive bob-sled equipped with adjustable runners and knees adapted to vary the width of the bob-sled to enable it to be arranged for hauling different kinds of loads of material.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bob-sled of this character adapted to have its width readily increased when it is desired to haul a large or high load such as a load of hay or straw and capable of being readily changed without the use of tools or the addition of separate pieces so that it will not be necessary to return home to effect such a change in the width of the sleigh.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. l n

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. 0 In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 and 2 designate front and rear axles or members constructed of tubular metal and receiving at their ends adj ustable sleeves 3 of front and rear knees 4 and 5 which are slidable inwardly and outwardly on the axles 1 and 2 to vary the width of the sleigh to adapt the same for a wagon body or bed or a hay rack and to enable the width of the sleigh to be increased when it is desired to haul high or large loads, such as a load of straw or hay.
The adjustable sleeves are preferably formed integral with the front and rear knees 4E and 5 which are suitably secured to front and rear runners 6 and 7. The front and rear runners and the knees may be of any desired construction and when it is not desired to use the runners in seasons of the year when there is no snow on the ground the adjustable sleeves 3 with the knees and the runners may be removed and wheels may be maintained on the axles. Each axle is provided at each side of its center with a longitudinal slot 8 having opposite notches 9 arranged at intervals and adapted to be engaged by a key 10 which also engages the adjustable sleeves 3 of the knees. The key 10 consists of upper and lower portions 11 and 12 arranged at right angles to each other and consisting of thin webs or flanges as clearly illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawings. Each knee sleeve is provided with a slot 13 and it has opposite notches 14 located at opposite sides of the slot 13 to receive the upper portion 11 of the key when the latter is dropped to lock the knees in their adjustment.
The key is provided at its upper end with a head 15 and the lower flange or portion 12 is disposed longitudinally of the axle and the slot of the same and the adjustable knee sleeves and the upper flange or web 11 is disposed transversely of the said slot and, is
adapted to drop into engagement with the same. When it is desired to adjust the knee sleeve the key is lifted to carry the upper portion 11 out of engagement with the notches. This will permit the key to slide with the knee sleeve in the slot of the axle and when the proper adjustment has been effected the key is reengaged with the notches of the axle and the sleeve of the knee. The axle is preferably reinforced at each of the slots with a plate 16 constructed of suitable material and provided with a longitudinal slot 1? and opposite notches 18 which correspond with the slots and notches of the axle and the sleeve.
The front ends of the rear runners are connected by a cross bar 19 constructed of tubular metal and equipped with extension sleeves 20 carrying terminal pivots 21 and secured in their adjustment by transverse bolts 22 or other suitable fastening devices which pierce the extension sleeves. The cross bar 19 is provided at intervals with perforations23 which are adapted to receive the bolts 22 or other fastening means for securing the sleeves in their adjustment. The terminal pivots which are provided with nuts 24: are arranged in slots 25 in the ends of the runners to prevent breakage by pea mitting the necessary play of the parts. The extension sleeves are connected by rods 26 with the coupling pole or reach 27 which is provided with an eye bolt or other suitable means for securing the front ends of the connecting rod 26 to the said pole or reach.-
The pole or reach is preferably provided with a plurality of perforations 28 adapted to receive the eye-bolt to enable the latter to be adjusted backwardly and forwardly to correspond with the adjustment of the rear runners. The extension sleeves 20 are pro vided at their ends with eyes 30' into which the rear ends of the rods 26'are linked. The rods 26 which converge forwardly from the ends of the rear runners form a flexible connection between the same and the said cou= pling pole or reach.
The sleigh is equipped with a tongue or pole 31 provided with a cross bar 32 prefer ably constructed of tubular metal and equipped with extension sleeves 33 adapted to be secured intheir adjustmentby transverse bolts or keys 34 which pierce the sleeves, the cross bar 32 being provided at intervals with perforations 35 to permit the adjustment of the fastening means of the extension sleeves. The extension sleeves 33 are provided with terminal pivots 36 which are secured in slots 37 of the front runner by nuts 38 or other suitable fastening means. The sleeves are also provided at their terminal portions with eyes 39 to which are secured the rear ends of forwardly converging bracing rods 40 provided attheir front ter I minals with hooks or projections 41 adapted to engage perforations 42 arranged at inter:
vals at the side edges of a plate 43 of the tongue or pole. The plate 43 which is preferably secured to the upper face of the tongue or pole forms an adjustable connection between the rods 40 and the pole and the said rods are retained in engagement with the plate 43 by means of a cap plate M secured to the plate 33 and adapted to retain the hooks or projections in the perforations 42.
By this construction the braces of the tongue or pole are adapted to be adjusted backwardly and forwardly to correspond with the adjustment of the cross bar which connects the front end of the front runner. After the axles and cross bars have been adjusted the outer ends of the axles are closed by removable heads 4L5 which may be secured in the ends of the axles in any desired manner. 7
The bob-sleigh is equipped with front and rear bolsters 46 and 47 which are adjustably" connected by means of the coupling pole or v reach 27. The front bolster is equipped with a bearing plate 49 which is pivoted by a king bolt 53 to abearin'g plate 50 provided with a substantially semicylindrical attaching portion 51 which straddles the front axle. The rear bolster is bolted or other; wise secured to the rear axle, a central recess 54 being provided in the bolster at the lower edge thereof for the reception of the reach or coupling pole, the rear bob being adjustable backwardly and forwardly to vary the length of the sleigh in the usual manner.
The front end of the reach which is supported upon an extension 55 of the bearing plate 49 is provided with an eye 56 prefer ably consisting of a metallic strap and receiving a pivot consisting of a bolt 57 and a sleeve 58 arranged on the bolt but any other suitable pivot may of course be employed. The pivot bolt 57 is supported at the top by an approximately L-shaped plate 48 secured at one of its sides or wings to the rear face of the front bolster and having its other side or wing extending over the front end of the reach and pierced by the said pivot bolt 57.
What is claimed is 1. An extension sleigh including'an axle provided with a longitudinal slot having transverse notches, a sleeve 'slidably mounted on the axle and provided with a key operating in the slot and having means for engaging the notches, and a runner connected with the sleeve.
2. An extension sleigh including an axle provided with a longitudinal slot having transverse notches located at intervals, a slidable sleeve arranged on the axle and movable inwardly and outwardly and a key provided with upper'and lower portions ar ranged at an angle and operating in thesaid slot; the upperportion being movable into and out of engagement with the notches to lock the sleeve in its adjustment.
3. An extension sleigh including an axle provided with longitudinal slots and having opposite transverse notches arranged at intervals, slidable sleeves arranged on the axle and keys operating in the said slots and provided with transversely disposed portions arranged to engage the notches for locking the sleeves in their adjustment.
4. An extension sleigh includinga front axle, front runners having knees adjustably connected to the axle, a tongue or pole provided with an extensible cross bar and having terminal members movable inwardly and outwardly and provided with pivots connected to the front runners, and braces connected with the said members and adjustably secured to the tongue or pole.
