Description
CARL ROESSLER, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY.
METHOD OF MANUFACTURING LEATHER SUBSTANCES.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL RoEssLnR, manufacturer, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Hamburg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Manufacturing Leather Substances, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing leather substances which can be used, for instance, as floor covering material or a material for making jointless floors.
The method consists essentially in grinding leather or leather waste alone or mixed with other fibrous substances such as asbestos, simultaneously with non-fibrous substances of granular nature and in adding a suitable binding agent thereto.
I In carrying out the method, leather or leather waste of any kind, tanned leather as well as untanned leather, may be utilized.
As non-fibrous substances, mineral and also organic substances, come, for instance into. consideration. The leather, the leather waste or its or their mixtures with asbestos or the like are ground together with nonfibrous substances in a suitable grinding device, the fibrous nature of the leather being preserved and the product thus obtained being made into a thick paste with a suitable binding agent.
This paste can be applied directly upon a suitable base and thus be used, for instance, for the production of jointless floors. It
, can, however, be also made into plates or slabs of any thickness and size by using pressure.
Example I: 100 kilograms of leather waste are ground with 20 kilograms of coarse asbestos threads, 162 kilograms of magnesium oxid 10 kilograms of kieselguhr and 15 kilograms of metal oxid, or earthencolors and the product obtained is made into a thick paste with a 25% addition of a solution of magnesium sulfate. This paste can be used either as a jointless floor or, for instance, be made into slabs under hydraulic pressure.
Another manner of carrying out the method of the present invention consists, after having ground the leather or leather waste with the non-fibrous" substances, in

adding to the product thus obtained, a small percentage of glycerin and making these substances into a thick paste by means of a binding agent such as linseed oil.
Example II: 100 kilograms of leather waste are ground with 20 kilograms of asbestos, 27 kilograms of casein and 1 5 kilo- ,grams of'metal oxid or earthen colors, 150 grams of glycerin are added thereto and the product thus obtained is made into a thick paste by adding 7 kilograms of pulverulent slaked lime with 30 liters of linseed oil.
Finally, for the manufacture of the substances in accordance withthe invention, a binding agent constituted by tar oils or mineral oils, may also be used and which may contain mineral substances such as silicates and the like. This kind of substances is very appropriate as floor covering material for drill halls, circuses and the like. 1
The leather substances manufactured in accordance with the present invention have, in comparison with the known substances, advantages in various respects. They are by a greater elasticity and are more resisting mechanically as well as against moisture. They are therefore Well washable. Furthermore they can be treated in any manner for instance, they can be sawed, cut, impremed and so on, Without losing solidity or disintegrating.
I claim:
1. The method of manufacturing leather substances, which comprises grinding leather Waste with asbestos, magnesium oxid, kieselguhr and a color to obtain a triturated fibrous I fourth part of magnesium sulfate.
2. The method of manufacturing leather substances, which comprises grinding 100 kilograms of leather waste. with 20 kilograms of asbestos, 162 kilo rams of magnesium oxid, 10 kilograms 0 kieselguhr and 15 kilograms of coloring material, and mixing the resulting product with magnesium sulfate suflicient to bind the mass.
In testimony whereof, I aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
