INVE VWI? A TTGRNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES WESLEY HUSE, OF GARY, INDIANA.
SUPPLEMENTAL AIR-FEEDING MEANS FOR summons, BOILERS, on s'roviis'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25,1916.
Application filed May 9, 1916. Serial 1810.963).
nace whereby the mingling of preheated air with the gases in combustion is effected with increased and more efiicient combustion and consequent saving in fuel consumption.
Another object of my invention is the pro- 4 vision of an lmproved means, adapted to be used on stoves, boilers and furnaces, that is so designed and is capable of such adjustment, relatively to the fire chamber of the stove, boiler or furnace, that it will effect a more complete smoke consumption, providev a more uniform heating and steadier fire draft and the consequent maintenance of uniform temperature in the apartment and,
at the same time, effect an increased ventilation by taking the air to be heated and directed into the fire chamber from the house find delivering it at desired points above the uel. c.
With other objects in view that will hereinafter appear, I have provided an improved means for heating air and delivering it into the combustion chamber at the desired points on top of the fuel and which embodies the peculiar features of construction and novel arrangement of parts, all of which will first be described in detail, then be specifically pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a-perspective view, parts being in section of a portion of a furnace with my invention operatively applied. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the several parts that constitute my invention, the said parts being shown separated.
My invention in its practical application is applied either to the body of the stove, furnace or boiler, or set in the door of the fire-box of said stove, boiler or furnace.
In the drawing I have shown my invention as set in the fire door of a iurnace and in applying the same to the door 1, the latter is formed with an opening 25mm whichis projected the annular flange 30"of"acollar 3. As is best shown in Fig. l, the flange 30 of the collar is of convexed shape 1n cross sec tion and it is held to its adjusted position by a pair of clamping rings, an outer one 4 and an inner one 5, each of which has a concaved bearing surface for engaging the convexed flange 30 of the collar 3. I
6--6 designate clamp bolts and nuts that hold the rings 4 and 5 in tight'engagemen't with the collar flange 30.
By reason of connecting the collar 3to I the furnace door, as shown and described,
a substantial ball and socket joint connection is provided that allows for directing the collar at any angle desired and at the same time conform to the angle of the fire door 'orcasing of the stove, iurnace or boiler to which my improvement may be applied.
7 designates an air pipe orrtube that is rotatably and longitudinally movable in the collar 3, the inner end of which is projected into the fire-box and terminates in an elbow shaped ejecting nozzle 70.
8 designates an air intake in the nature of an annular head portion, provided with a dished rear wall 80 that terminates in a tubular extension 80* adapted to fit and be secured in the outer end of the tube 7 and the said head has a series of air inlets 81 which may or may not have the usual slide plate to regulate the size of the openings.
9 designates a lever arm attached to the head, and projected radially therefrom, and by means of which the air intake or head and the tube 7,can be longitudinally or rotatably shifted in the collar 3.
By reason of the peculiar shape of the air tube and the manner in which the same is applied to the furnace, the air that is taken in through the air intake or head is thoroughly heated by contact with the heated tube as it is drawn in through such tube from which, in its preheated condition it passes out onto the top of the fire and mixing with the coal gases thereby forms a more perfect combustion and creating the draft needed to properly maintain. the fire.
By mounting the air tube for longitudinal and rotary movement relatively to the collar 3, as shown and d ibed, the said tube can be adjusted to r the at point desired over the advantages of such adjustment being pp c, it since in furnaces and stoves lacking cii'ieient air draft for is thus set,the collar is held clamped to theadjusted position-by tightly clamping 1 the rings 4 and 5 against it, as before stated, and} my invention, the collar 3 is first set to the angle desired, necessary to conform to the angle of the fire door or casing, and when it when thus applied, the air tube can be readily shifted to the point over the fuel where most needed and by the discharge of the preheated air at such needed point, a more complete combustion is developed and a consequent relative saving of fuel.
What I-claim is: I In a stove, boiler or furnace, the combination with the door or casing and the fire pot;
Copies of this patent may be obtained for collar having its outer end rockably mounted in the said door or casing and means for holding the said collar to its said position relatively to the door, the said means consisting of a pair of opposing clamping rings having concaved bearing surfaces that engage the convexed portion of the collar, one
' of the said rings engaging the inside and the other of the rings engaging the outside of the door or casing, clamp bolts that pass through the doorwasing and the rings, nuts engaging the said bolts for drawlng the rings into tight engagement with the con vexed portion ofthe collar whereby to. fixedly hold the collar to its adjusted positions,
an air intake tube projected through the said collar, said tube having longitudinal and rotatable movement within the collar and hav- CHARLES WESLEY Hose.
