To all 'whom t may concern.' 'Be it known that I, ALEXANDER S. SPIE- ,GEL, a citizen of the United States, and resi-` 'dent pf Chicago, county of Cook, and'State 'of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing-Machines, i of which the following is a specification and Iwhich are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to the manufacture of'prepared roofing and more particularly to the production of so-called strip shingles.'
These 4shingles comprise sections of prepared yroofing adapted to be laid upon the roof end to end in overlapping rows and intervals to simulate the appearance of a plurality of individual shingles.

indicated thereon by dotted linesl The strip shingle, as 10 (Fig. 4:), may be formed to embody the combined interlocking and selfspacing feature forming the a pair of rotating cutter heads 33, 34 and 35, 36, cooperate with the diey liable from each side.` These two sets of cutter' heads are of like construction,except that when the strips 10 have the complementary shoulders 15,116 at their opposite ends, the blades, as 37- and y38, oi the cutter heads 33 and', respectively, will be differently formed. Preferablyrthe two cutter heads, 3,3, 34 and 35, 36, of each pair are mounted uponfa common shaft', as 39 or 40. Each of these shafts extends along the corresponding side of the machine and is parallel'with the direction rolls 27, 28. As shown, each of the shafts 39,40, is journaled in brackets 41, 42, of the corresponding side member 31,. 32 of the frame 29. Each shaft 39, 40,' may be provided with a belt pulley 43 at that endwliich is remote from the corresponding set" of the travel of. the web 14, between the ,feed
of cutter' heads, 33, 34, or 35, 3G. When so constructed either one of the. belt pulleys 43 may be used for driving the machine.
`The lower feed roll 27 is driven from one of the shafts 3S), 4.0. In the arrangement shown this feed roll also serves for transmitting motion from the shaft 3S) eelt), ha ving the belt pulley 43 which is being used for driving the. machine, to the other one of said shafts. To this end` a, counter shaft ll extends parallel with and below each of the shafts lo and lo on a level with the feed roll 2T. Each oi" these counter shafts lis j onrnaled in the corresponding set oi brackets 11, l2 and it is operatively connected with the adjacent shaft -:lllor lll by intermeshing spur gears l5 and lo. Each counter shaft il is also operatively connected with the feed roll E37, as by a pair of interineshing beveled gears l? and 48, one mounted on the corresponda f counter shaft el and the other mounted on t ie adjacent end of the feed roll. As shown, each of the cutter heads 34 and 3G is provided with four blades 49 which serve for the purpose ot' forming the notches 17 in the strip shingle l0. Each of these blades is mounted in the correslionding eut ter head lll. 3G, as to project radially from the corresponding shalt 39. 4U, in a eon1- inon plane and they are located at equal intervals about the shaft. As shown, the inner `end ol each blade elf) enters a socket 51. `in the corresponding head 34, 36, and is adjustably secured therein by a set screw 52. The blades 3T and 38 ot' the cittter heads and 35 serve for dividing,r the corresponding part or halt 19, 30, ol.E the web 14, upon the broken lines or 21.. The diiierent form of the two blades 3i' and 38 arises from the desirability of making all oi? the 4rstrip shingles l() of the saine shape, wheihe produced from one, or the other of the two 'parts or halves 19, 20 of the web 1.4;. These blades also projcetradially from the ter heads :lll and 35.` They cooperate with the adjacent parts 53, 54 oi the forward edge. of the die table $30. The two parts 53, 54 ot' the forward edge ot' the die table 30 are each accordingly made of` corrcsponding;r cut-4 a complementary shapewvith the blade 37 or 38 of the adjacent cutter head 33, 35. The location of the shafts 3!) and l() above the level of the die table 3U, already described, provides that a shearing cut is also effected by each of the blades 3T and ilo, the cut, in each instance, beginning at the outer end of the plate and proceeding:r inwardly along the blade and toward the adjacentedge ofthe web 1l. Preferably the relative radial positions of the several blades `lil and the two blades 37 3B, is such that the blades 49, at the two sides of the machine operate alternately, and the blades il? and :l5 do not operate together or 'at the same time with the blade 49 at the same side of the machine.
As all of the part-s of the machine rotate continuously they may be. operated at high speed. Furthermore, neither the width of the strips 1l), nor the position ot' the shoulders l5, 16 with reference to the side of the strips, are'dependent upon a uniform mover ment of the web ll between the leed rolls :'27, It has also been found that a softness of the adhesive layer 1:! does not interfere with the operation oi the cutter blades l5) and 37, 3B, as is the case when reciprocating cutter blades are employed. The invention accordingly renders it entirely practicable to form the web l-l into the strip shingles 1U immediately after it has been produced and while the adhesive layer 12 is still soft.
