Be it known that I, Anonrrr H. KURTH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of lililwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Anchor-Winches for Small Craft; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in anchor winches more particularly of a type adapted for use on small craft.
It is in general the object of the present invention to simplify the structure and improve the efliciency and the readiness of operation of devices of this character.
It is more specifically an object to provide an anchor winch which has means for securing it to a boat in such manner that the winch is capable of universal pivotal adjustment with respect to its point of attachment to the boat, whereby the drum of the winch may be positioned in proper relation to certain guide pulleys carried on the boat, it being understood that the present structure is more particularly adapted to be secured at the intermediate portion of a boat.
Another object is to provide an exceedingly simple locking pawl for the Windlass drum which is at the same time adapted for ready and convenient manipulation to release the drum.
A further specific object resides in the provision of an improved guide roller means for the rope in conjunction with the Windlass.
lVith the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, arrangement and formation of parts more particularly hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the body of the wlnch comprises a pair of side plates 5 and 6 respectively which are held in spaced parallel relation by the corner bolts 7 passed therethrough, and carrying spacing sleeves 8 disposed between the plates. The plate 5 has an outwardly projected central bearing boss 9 and journaled in this boss is a sleeve 10 which forms the hub portion of the looking ratchet wheel 11. The plate 6 is pro vided centrally with an inwardly projected bearing boss 12 in which is journaled a sleeve 13 which terminates at its inner end.
flush with the inner end of the boss and which has its other end projected a slight distance outwardly of the plate. The bores of the sleeves 10 and 13 are squared, and slidably passed through these bores is a squared shaft 14 which has its end adjacent the sleeve 10 provided with a head 15 limiting its movement through the sleeve. A drum hub 16 is provided which is disposed between the ratchet wheel 11 and the boss 12 and which has a squared bore whereby it is interlockingly mounted on the shaft 14. The flanges of this hub comprise circular plates 17 fastened to the sides thereof,- and these flange plates are provided with centrally squared openings receiving the shaft. An actuating ratchet wheel 18 is provided having a squared opening receiving the end of the shaft 14 adjacent the sleeve 13 and engaged also onthis end of the shaft 14 is a locking sleeve 19 provided with set screws 20 whereby it may be locked on the shaft. For cooperation with the ratchet wheel 18, an operating lever 21 is provided having its inner end bifurcated to embrace the ratchet wheel, the ends of the fur-cations journally receiving the sleeves 13 and 19 respectively. A gravity pawl 22 is carried by the lever for engagement with the ratchet wheel.
By the structure set forth, a definite coaction of parts is provided conducing to a maximum simplicity and economy of structure, and to a maximum readiness of assembly of the various parts. The locking sleeve 19 holds all of the parts described in assembled relation and by removal of the sleeve 19 and withdrawal of the squared shaft all of the parts are mutually detached. The sleeve hub 10 of the locking ratchet and,
through one leg of the memberto clamp the be procured to properly the spacing sleeve 13 of the actuating ratchet form substantially bearing pintles for the Windlass drum, and the spacing sleeve 13 and locking sleeve 19 form the bearings for the furcations of the lever. The drum proper is held properly spaced between the side plates by the ratchet wheel ll'on one side and the bearing boss 19 of the plate 6 on the other side.
The pawl for the locking ratchet 11 comprises a bar 23 intermediately pivoted directly under the axis of the Windlass and having its head end upwardly inclined and provided with a tooth 24 selectively engageable with the teeth of the ratchet, and the handle end of the pawl bar extends horizontally to a point outwardly of the plate 5 and terminates in a finger piece 25 whereby the pawl may be readily tripped to release the drum. This handle end of the pawl also serves as a weight to urge the tooth 24: into engagement with the ratchet wheel at all times.
To provide an anti-friction means for guiding the rope adjacent the winch, a pair of upstanding roller bars 26 are provided 7 at the end of the winch from which the rope normally projects, and these bars are journally mounted by means of pint1es27 which engage in respective bars of vertically alined bearing ears 28 formed on the plates.
Taking np now the means forsecuring the winch to the side of a boat in a manner permitting universal pivotal adjustment with respect to the point of attachment, the plate 5 is provided with an outwardly projecting ear 29 centrally apertured for cooperation with a similarly apertured car 30, carried by a clamp member 31, for the reception of a clamping screw 32. This clamp member is of inverted Ushape to embrace the side of a boat and a clamping screw 33 is passed boat between said screw and the other leg of the member. The clamping action procured by the screw 32 permits adjustment in a generally vertical direction, and the clamping action procured by the screw 33 permits pivotal adjustment in a generally horizontal direction, and thus a. universal adjustment to a certain extent of the Windlass body may position the windlass body relative to a plurality of guide rollers 34 carried by the side of the boat for guiding the cable 35 to the end of the boat. Also the present winch is shown as mounted inboard of the boat, it could as well be mounted outboard if desired.
I claim:
1. A winch of the class described comprising a body member provided with a central bearing, a. ratchet wheel, a hub sleeve on the ratchet wheel journaled in the bearing and having a squared bore, a drum including a hub portion having a squared bore, a second ratchet wheel having a squared bore, a spacing sleeve disposed between said second ratchet wheel and the hub portion, a squared shaft passed through the hub sleeve, the drum hub, the said spacing sleeve and the second ratchet wheel, an operating lever j ournaled on the spacing sleeve, and a pawl on the operating lever for coaction with the second ratchet wheel. 7

A winch of the class described comprising the combination of a pair of side members secured in spaced relation and provided with bearings, a locking ratchet wheel, a hub sleeve for said wheel j ournaled in the bearing of one side member, and having a squared bore, a drum including a hub having a squared bore, a spacing sleeve journaled in the bearing of the other side member, an actuating ratchet wheel having a squared bore, a squared shaft passed through the said hub sleeve, the drum hub,the spacing sleeve and the actuating ratchet, a holding sleeve on the shaft adjacent the actuating ratchet, an actuating lever having inner end furcations embracing the actuating ratchet wheel and journaled on the'spacing sleeve and the holding sleeve, and a pawl on the lever engageable with the actuating ratchet wheel.
3. A winch of the class described comprising a pair of side members secured in spaced relation, a bearing projecting outwardly from one side member, a second bearing projecting inwardly from the other side member, a holding ratchet wheel, a hub sleeve therefor, journaled in the first named bearing, a drum including a hub having a squared bore, a spacing sleeve journaled in the second named bearing and extending outwardly of the respective side member, an actuating ratchet wheel having a. squared bore, a squared shaft passed through the hub sleeve, the drum hub, the spacing sleeve and the actuating ratchet wheel, a holding sleeve on the shaft outwardly of the actuating ratchet wheel, an operating lever journally mounted on at least one of said sleeves, and a pawl carried by the lever and engageable with the actuating ratchet wheel.
