Edward G. 1645/56! In" Ml nun l.IIIN-UM alumn I L EDWARD G. KAYSEB, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOTTLE-STOPPEB FASTENEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1916.
Application filed September 30, 1914. Serial No. 864,269.
The invention has for its object to provide a fastener which will securely hold the cap and force it down on the bottle mouth to seal the same, and which can be easily and quickly manipulated to fasten or release the The invention also has for its object to provide novel and improved means for locking the fastener to prevent accidental disengagement from the cap.
These objects are attained by means of a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fragment of a bottle showing the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 shows a rear elevation of the device, and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the parts in another position.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a fragment of the bottle to which the invention is applied. The neck of the bottle, near the mouth thereof, is provided with the usual shoulder 6 which serves to retain in place a supporting member for the fastener of the stopper 7 of the bottle, said stopper being an ordinary cap seating on the bottle mouth and havin the usual retaining flange. The supporting member is a piece of wire 8 which is bent to partly encircle the bottle neck, beneath the shoulder 6. The ends of the wire are bent into eyes 9 which serve as a pivotal support for the fastener, the latter being a piece of wire which is bent to form a cross bar 10 having at one end a loop 11 which passes through the eyes 9. The other end of the cross bar terminates in a downturned hook 12. The fastener is so dimensioned and located that the part 10 may be swung to extend across the top of the cap, and upon being locked in this position, the cap is securely held in place on the bottle mouth.
The following means are provided for locking the fastener: Adjacent to the ends of the support 8, and diametrically opposite each other, the same is bent to form eyes 1 which pivotally support a bail-shaped lever 14. The branches of this bail, adjacent to the pivotal connection of the same with the eyes 13, are bent into eyes 15 to which are connected the respective ends of a locking bail 16 designed to engage the hook 12. The ends of the branches of the locking bail have lateral bends which are slipped into the eyes 13 whereby a pivotal connection between the bail and the lever is had. The cross piece connecting the branches of the bail is engageable with the book 12.
In operation, before the bail 16 can be placed over the book 12, it is necessary to swing the lever 14 upward until the pivot of the bail is above the pivotal connection of the lever with the support 8. This operation elevates and carries the bail forward a sufficient distance so that it may be swung over the hook 12. Now, to tighten the bail on the hook, the lever is swung downward which exerts a downward pull on the bail and draws it tightly down over the hook. The lever is swung down until the pivots of the bail and the lever are in vertical alinement or slightly past a dead center position. whereupon the bail is locked in holding position, and it cannot be released from the hook until the lever is again swung upward to carry the bail upward and forward oil the hook. The downward pull on the bail causes the cross bar to press down on the cap, and the latter is thus tightly (lumped on the bottle mouth to seal the same. It will be noted that in the applicants device the hook 12, and the connecting portion of the branches of the bail 14 are on opposite sides of the bottle, and the bail 16 extends diagonally therebetwcen. It will therefore be seen that the bail 16 tends to draw the bail 14 tightly against the side of the bottle and prevents the same from accidentally slipping up to release the cross bar 10.
By providing the cap fastener hcrcinbefore described, the bottle may be partly emptied and rescaled by replacing the cap arid securing the same by the fastening dcvlce.
I claim:
The combination with a bottle and a stopper therefor; of a fastener for the stopper comprising a supporting member fastened to the bottle, a stopper holding member pivoted to said supporting member and adapted to extend across the top of the sto per, a locking bail straddling the bott e, the branches of which bail are pivoted to the support adjacent to the pivot of the stopper holding member and the connecting portion of said bail branches being adapted to engage the side of the bottle when said hail is in locking )osition, and a bail adapted to engage the iree end of the sto per holding member and having its branc ies )ivotally connected to the branches of the loc ing bail adjacent to the pivot thereof, that part of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cent: each,
2O whereof I ailix my signature two witnesses.
