To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hans Anzennonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of lVisconsin, have invented new and use,
ful Improvements in Skylight Supporting and Adjusting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sky light supporting and adjusting apparatus.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for raising and lowering a sky light and for looking it in a raised position.
In the drawings Figure l is a sectional view of a sky light frame and sash showing the latter supported in raised position by apparatus embodying my invention, the section being taken on line 11 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, drawn on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the lower end portion of the adjusting apparatus. Fig. i is a sectional view, drawn on line H of Fig. 3.
Like parts are identified by the same reference characters throughout the several views.
The roof A is provided with a light well having walls A of ordinary construction, to one upper margin of which the sash B is hinged, as shown at B. The walls of the,
light well have inclined side margins adapted to receive and support the sash when the latter is in closed position. All of these parts may be of ordinary construction.
A bar C is secured by bolts C to each side wall a of the light well. These bars are each downwardly and inwardly inclined from the respective side walls, as shown at D, and their inner end portions D extend vertically and downwardly or parallel with each other and are sufficiently spaced apart to receive an operating lever between them. They therefore constitute supporting hangers for the operating lever. This operating lever has its central portion fulcrumed or pivotally secured near the upper end of the portions D of the bracket bars by a pivot or fulcrum bolt E. The arm F of the lever projects upwardly and angularly in the direction of the lower portion of the sky light sash and is connected with the sides of the sash frame near the lower end of the latter by a link rod G which is pivotally secured at g to the side bars of the sash frame. central portion of the rod G is looped through an aperture at g in the arm F of the operating lover. The operating lever is also provided with an arm F which projccts downwardly and divergently from the hanger portions D of the bracket bars, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The lower end portion f of the arm F is partially elbowed and diverges from the hangers D more abruptly than the main portion of this arm of the lever. An operating cable or wire H is secured to the portion f near its extremity and a latch I is pivoted at 2' substantially at the elbow.
The latch I is free to swing upon its pivot bolts 2', but its upwardly swinging movement is limited by a stop J. A coiled spring K connects the latch T with the portion F of the operating lever above the pivot bolt 2' and tends to pull the latch upwardly in the direction of the stop J. The outer end of the latch is provided with a notch L in which the tapered extremity (Z of the hanger is adapted to engage.
- The latch preferably comprises a flat bar bent or folded upon itself to form a U- shaped or stirrup shaped member, each leg or side of which is provided with a notch L to receive one of the hangers D and these hangers may, if desired, be connected by a spacer bolt (Z near their lower ends, whereby they are kept from spreading or drawing toward each other. This, however, is not essential as one of the bars will necessarily engage the latch I with proper manipulation.
It will be observed that the operating wire or cable H is provided with a branch H connecting its upper end portion with the outer end of the latch I at it. Normally this branch will be sufficiently slack so that it will not interfere with the upward move- ,ment of the latch I into en a ement with the hangers D, but by pulling the operating cable Fl to the right, as indicated by dotted lines 25 in Fig. 1, the branch H may be utilized to retract the latch T against the tension of the spring K and disengage it from the hangers, whereupon the weight of the sash B will be entirely supported by the cable H through the medium of the operating lever F, F, and the sash may therefore be lowered to closed position by means of the cable H, the operating lever and cable swinging to the position indicated by the dotted line a in Fig. 1. I claim 1. Operating mechanism for skylight sash, including a hanger bracket, an operating lever pivotally connected therewith, said hanger bracket having a depending portion below the point of pivotal connection, means 'for connecting the operating lever with the sky light sash, a latch connected with the operating lever and adapted to resiliently engage the depending portion of the hanger bracket, depending flexible actuating connections for the operatinglever, and branch connectionsextending therefrom to the latch, whereby the latter may be retracted by swinging the operating connection out of a vertical position.
2. Sky light sash operating mechanism, comprising the combination with a hinged sky light sash, of a hanger bracket, an operating lever pivotally connected therewith, a
. link connecting one arm of the operating lever with the sides of the sash at points distant from the hinged margin thereof, a flexible actuating connection secured to another arm of said operating lever on the opposite side of its pivotal connection with the hanger bracket, a latch pivotally connected with the operating lever and adapted to engage said bracket, and means connected with r the flexible actuating connection for retractsash, comprising the combination with the,
walls of a light well, of a sky light sash having a margin in hinge connection with one of said walls, hanger bars secured tothe walls of said well and projecting inwardly from opposite sides thereof and downwardly in substantially parallel relation to each other at their inner ends, a lever pivotally connected with said downwardly extending portions of the hanger bars, said lever comprising a flat bar having its central portion extending between the hanger bars and supported therefrom by a pivot bolt, a link rod passing through one arm of said lever and pivoted to the sides of the sash frame, a flexible actuating connection attached to the other arm of said lever, a latch pivotally connected with the lever and adapted to engage the lower extremities ofthe hanger bars when the'lever is actuated to raise the sash, and a flexible branch connection between said actuating connection and the free end portion of said latch adapted to transmit motion from the actuating connection to the latch when said actuatingconnection is swung inone direction from normal position. 7
