This invention relates to a machine for uniting metal sheets or plates; I
It is common practice in this art for inill ing establishments tO fni-nish jobbers and others with metal sheets or plates which the jobber-s or others have to unite or connect together when it is desired to use the same for roofing or other pur oses; The johbers and others frequently unite these sheets or plates by first edging one end of the same by a hand operated machine. The

A still fnrther object is to provide a machine for operating upon sheets of material forthe purpose of uniting them together With ine'ans o'perable automatically and operatrvely connected to the uniting means for shearing and edging the sheets prior to uniting them together, there beingmeans ep eratively connected to the nniting means for Winding the united sheets into a roll ready for the market. I
A still further object is to provide an antomatically operatin machine embodying among other characteristics means whereby a plurality of sheets may be sheared and edged and united together and rolled into a bundle ready for the market With the chine so constructed that it may be readily and expeditiously adjusted for operation upon sheets of various widths and lengths.
It is still further designed to provide an automatically operating machine whereby metallic or other sheets of material may be united together after they have been sheared and edged by mechanism operatively connected to the uniting means with the machine also provided with mechanism whereby the sheets may be fed through the machine and wound into a roll ready for the market, there being means constructed and arranged to indicate when the predetermined number of sheets have been united to thereby automatically throw parts of the machine out of operation to prevent uniting a single sheet more than the predetermined number to be wound into a marketable roll.
IVith the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combi nation and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion, size and minor details without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Fig. 13 is an enlarged detail view illustrating the mechanism for throwing the single and double lock seaming devices out of operation and for indicating the number of sheets connected together and being fed through the machine.
In carrying out my invention, I employ preferably two separate frames A and B. The frame A preferably includes side sills 10 and 11 connected together by means of suit able cross pieces 12 and 13 and mounted upon suitable legs 14. The frame B prefei= ably includes side sills 15 and 16 and an intermediate sill 17 with the sills connected or cast with the transverse cross-pieces 18, 1t) and 20. This frame B is preferably supported by suitable legs 21 and the two frames may be bolted or otherwise secured together as indicated at 22.
With the understanding that plates or sheets of varying lengths and widths may be operated upon in the use of my invention and with the further understanding that milling establishments furnish jobbers with unconnected or separate sheets or plates, we will assume that the milling establishment has furnished a quantity of metal plates or sheets and it is desired to unite them together and form them into a roll for the market to use for rooting or other purposes. These sheets or plates we will assume are twenty-eight inches in length or approximately so. Sometimes the ends have been properly mill-squared, that is, the ends have been sheared at a direct right angle to the longitudinal edges of the sheets or plates. At an increased expense to jobbers the milling establishments will re-square the sheared ends of the sheets. As this necessitates an extra operation on the part of the milling establishment, and as hand operated niachines are used for the purpose of re-squau ing the ends of the sheet, the expense is ohviously increased. Therefore, the jobber pays the milling establishment extra to re square the ends of the sheets or himself resquares the mill-squared ends through the use of hand operated machines. The jobber is put either to additional expense or to considerable loss of time. If the ends of the sheets are not true, that is, properly squared, a proper joint cannot be made in uniting the sheets together. To save additional expense and loss of time in re-squaring, I first provide means for simultaneously shearing and pro viding each end of each plate with a hook or What is commonly termed an edge, although, as intimated, I do not confine myself to shearing the ends of the sheets. To ac romplish this simultaneous shearing and edging of the ends of each sheet, I mount in suitable standards 23 and 24 disposed on the frame A, spaced cam shafts 25 and 26, each havingtwo or more spaced cams 27 and 2S thereon. Immediately over the cam shafts 25 and 26 I mount vertically movable clamping members 29 and 30 each of which carries an arm 31 at each end thereof whose outer ends are pivotally connected at 32 to the arms 33 of the standards 23 and 24. These clamping members cooperate with clamping members 34 and 35 fixedly mounted in the arms 3 1 and 35 of the standards 23 and 24, respectively. Thus, the clamping members 34 and 35 remain stationary, while, by virtue of the pivotal arm connections 31 of the movable clamping members 29 and 30, the latter may be raised into cooperative relation with the clamping members 34 and 35 to clamp and hold the sheets or plates 36 to be sheared and edged. To effect the vertical movement of the movable clamping members 29 and 30 I have provided the aforesaid cam shafts and 26 with the said cams 27 and 28 adapted to engage rollers 37 carried by the movable clamping members 29 and 30 so that as the cam shafts are rocked the engagement of the cams 27 and 28 with the rollers 37 will. effect the raising and lowering of the movable clamping members 29 and 30. I provide each of the cam shafts 25 and 26 with' a crank arm 33 and 39, respectively, to Which I pivotally connect a link 40 with a pitman 41 secured to the pivotal connection 42 between the link 40 and the crank arm 39 so that upon operation of the pitman the cam shafts are rocked. This pitman 41 may be operated in any suitable manner to effect oscillation or rocking of the camsh'afts 25 and 26 so as to raise and lower the movable clamping members 29 and 30 in a manner which should now be understood. 1 will later describe one means by which the pitman 41 may be operated and it will be the way it is preferably operated in carrying out the present lllV ell'tlOn; As the clamping members 29 and 30 are raised into clamping 'coiiperation with the fixed clamping members 34 and 35 to hold the sheet or plate 36 between them through the instrun'ientality of the cam mechanism and pitman connection hereinbefore described, there is set in operation means for shearing and bending the opposite ends of the metal plate 36. This means consists of a shearing blade holding member 44 having an inclined face to which face a shearing plate is connected in any suitable manner and whose shearing edge is indicated at 46. Secured to the shearing blade holding member 44 are bearings 43 in which are journaled the short shafts secured to the frame A. To one of the short shafts 43 is rigidly connected a crank arm 47 which has pivotal connection with a link 18 pivoted at 49 to another crank arm 50 fixedly secured to a shaft 51 to which latter is fixedly secured a shearing blade holder 52 to the inclined face of which is secured in any suitable manner a shearing blade 53 having a shearing edge 54 so that upon reciprocation in any suitable manner of the pitman of the aforesaid crank arm 47 and link 48 the shearing blade holders 44 and 52 with their blades are swung on their axes 43 and 51.
As seen in Fig. 1 the plate or sheet 36 is positioned so that when it is clampedbetween the upper clamping members 34 and 35 and the lower clamping members 29 and 30 its ends project slightly beyond the same. By a movement in one direction of the pitman 55 the blade holder 44 is swung downwardly and as it swings downwardly the shearing edge 46 of blade 45 engages the metal sheet 36 evenly and bends it into engagement with the shearing edge 57 of the blade 58 fixedly secured in any suitable manner to the movable clamping member 30. As this inner end of the sheet 36 is sheared the edge 46 of the blade 45 continues into the notch 59 and forces the sheared edge of the plate 36 against the face 60 of the movable clamping member,30 and thereby provides the inner end of the sheet or plate with a hook or edge 61 which is thereby disposed at an angle to the body of the plate. As the inner end of the plate 36 is thus sheared and bent,- the outer end of-the plate is likewise sheared and bent only that instead of bending the outer end downwardly during the shearing and bending process, the outer end is directed upwardly to form the hook or edge 62 (Fig. 8). Forinstance, when the swinging blade 45 1s swung downwardly the link connection 43 between the crank arms 47 and 50 causes the blade holder 52 to swing upwardly and in its upward swing the shearing edge 54 of the shearing blade 53 engages the outer end of the sheet 36 and bendsit around so that when the shearing edge 54 reachesthe cutting edge 63 of the shearing blade 64 secured in any suitable manner to the fixed clamping member 34, V
the outer end of the sheet 36 is sheared evenly and the continued swinging movement ofthe shearing edge 54 of the blade 53 will force the sheared outer edge of the plate past the shearing edge 63 of'the blade 64 and into the notch 65 against the flat surface 66 on the fixed clamping member 34 and thereby provide the upwardly directed hook end or edge 62 at the outer end of the plate 36.
While I have illustrated herein my improved combined shearing and edging device in combination with means for carry- 6 After I have sheared and bent the ends of a plate 36 in the manner described, the plate is transferred automatically from the shearing out other steps in the production of a ing and edging mechanism to a table 67 along one side of which may be placed a gage 68 to guide material through the machine. This table is of a width to accommodate sheet metal or plates of varying widths, say for instance twenty inch, twentysix and one-half inch, twenty-eight inch, etc. This table 67 may be supported in part on the cross piece 18 of the frame B and on bracket arms 69 which may extend from the table or frame A or in any other suitable manner. To effect the transfer of the sheared and edged plates I provide means consisting of preferably a pair of chains 69, which are mounted over sprocket wheels 70 carried on the shafts 71 and 72 mounted in brackets 73 on the frameA, there being fingers 7 A on the chains 69 and 'at predetermined times or immediately after the shearing and bending of the ends of the plate 36 these fingers 74: are adapted to engage the plate 36 and carry it on the chains 69 under the influence of operation of the latter in a manner presently explained, to the table 67 where there is already a plate sheared and bent like the plate 36 in Fig. 8 so that the inner downwardly turned end 61 of the transferred plate 36 may overlap the upwardly turned end 62 of the plate 70 which is already on the table 67, as has been stated, and against the guide 67 ready for feed through the machine so that the hooked overlapping ends or edges 61 and 62 of the plates 36 and 70 may be fed in this relation in a manner to be presently explained through the machine for firmly uniting the overlapped ends 61 and 62 of the plates.
To operate the transferring mechanism I provide a counter shaft 75 journaled in any suitable manner in the frame A and which has on it sprocket wheels 76 adapted to engage between the runs of the chains 69 to operate the latter when the counter shaft 7 5 is rotated. Keyed to the inner end of the counter shaft 75 is a beveled pinion 76 adapted to mesh with a beveled gear 77 keyed to a shaft 79 provided with a worm gear 80 with which may mesh a worm 81 carried by the drive shaft 82 of any suit able motor 83. In this particular instance, the shaft 79 forms the main drive shaft of my improved machine and it is preferably journaled in any suitable manner in the table or frame B and transversely of the latter. However it will be seen from the foregoing that in combination with the combined shearing and edging device I may provide the transferring device and drive or operate the latter by or from any suitable source.
After shearing and edging the plates and transferring them from the shearing and edging device to the table and after abutting plates have their hooked ends overlapped, I operate upon the hooked overlapped ends to form a single and a double lock seam in a manner which will be hereinafter described and in order to effect a feed of the overlapped and united plates through the machine I provide a winding reel 84c with which reel. the hooked end 61 of the first plate 36 is connected so that as the plates which are interlocked with the first plate 36 and with the overlapping plates on the table 67 are pulled or drawn through the machine by said reel 84 having frictional drive connection with the main drive shaft.
To single and double lock the seams I provide on the frame B spaced pairs of uprights 85 and 86 each upright of each pair having a slot 87 in its upper end. In the front pair of standards 85 I mount upper and lower single lock seaming rollers 88 and 89 geared together by the intermeshing gears 90 and 91 and in the rear pair of uprights 86 I mount upper and lower double lock seaming rollers 92 and 93, respectively, geared together by the gears 94, and 95, the lower rollers 89 and 93 being secured to shafts 96 and 97 respectively, jOlllllitlGLl in the pairs of uprights 85 and 86 and driven by means of chains 98 and 99 operating over the sprocket wheels 100 and 101 on the main drive shaft 7 9 and over the sprocket wheels 102 and 103 on the shafts 96 and 97 of the lower rollers. The upper rollers 88 and 92 are secured to shafts 104 and 105. respectively, which are normally positioned on the lower ends of the slots 87 of the uprights 85 and 86. On the front and rear lower shafts 96 and 97 are pairs of levers 106 and 107 connected by suitable links 108. These levers have curved slots 109 in which said shafts 104 and are located. The upper rollers 88 and 92 may be lifted away from cooperative relation with the lower rollers 89 and 93, respectively, by means of these levers 106 and 107, as will be explained.
To connect up the shearing and edging device hereinbefore described to the seaming mechanism, I provide the front upper and lower roller shafts 1041 and 96 with two cams 109 and 110, respectively each having a cam groove 111 therein in which may operate a roller 112 carried at the outer end of the pitmen 4:1 and 55 so that as the shafts 104: and 96 revolve said cams revolve and cause said pitmen to effect the aforesaid operations of the shearing and bending mechanism.
As the sheets or plates 86 and 70 which have been overlapped as shown in Fig. 9 are passed between the rollers 88 and 89 they are flattened out under the weight of the upper rollers 88 as indicated at 113 in Fig. 10 to provide a single lock scam, the material being drawn between the rollers 88 and 89 by the winding reel 84: as has been stated. When each single lock seam 113 reaches the dogs 114 and 115 the feed of the material is stopped ,momentarily. These dogs 114 and 115 are fixedly secured to a shaft 116 which is journaled in hanger plates 117 and 118 connected to the upper shafts 104 and 105. Immediately upon the single lock seam 113 engaging the dogs 114 and 115, mechanism is set into operation to double up the two plates at the point of formation of the single lock' seam as indicated at 117' in Fig. 11. This doubling of the interlocked plates at the single seam connection 113 may be effected in one way by the provision of male and female dies. The female die plate is indicated at 118 and is formed of hard steel and provides a clamping member and is. carried by the vertically movable bed 119 swingingly mounted on the shaft 96 by the arms 120 and provided on its under side with rollers 121 adapted to be engaged by cams 122 keyed to the main drive shaft 79 to support the swinging bed. The female die plate is raised with the bed 119 through the instrumentality of these cams 122 as the main drive shaft rotates because of irregular surfaces of the cams engaging. the rollers 121, effecting an alternate raising and lowering of said bed. When the female die plate 118. is raised the sheets or plates resting on its upper surface and directly over the recess 123 in the die plate 118 are forced against the fixed clamping member 124 so that the sheets or plates 36 and are held firmly between the die plate 118 and clamp member 124. The clamping member 124 may beheld fixedly by reason of hanger arms 125 and 126 secured to or formed with the aforesaid hanger plates 117 and 118 which are connected tn the upper roller shafts 104 and 105. as has been stated. As
the clamping bed moves upwardly and forces the sheets or plates 36 and 70 into tight engagement ith th clampi g member 124 the single lock seam joint 113 is forced down into the recess 123 in the die plate 118 and against the flat face 125 of the female die and caused to assume the con dition indicated at 117 in Fig. 11 through the instrumentality of a male die 127 swingingly mounted above the female die plate. One means for swingingly mounting this male die 127 is to mount stub, shafts 128 in the ends of the male die member 127 and to journal these stub shafts 128 in the aforesaid hanger arms 125 and 126 with a pinion 129 keyed en one of the stub shafts 128 for mesh with the teeth 130 of a rack bar 131 provided with a slot 132 whichembraces the shaft 96 of the forward lower roller- 89 so that as the shaft 9.6 revolves under the infiuence of the chain connection 98 between the shaft 96 and the main drive shaft 79 the cam 134 on said shaft engages the roller. 135 on the rack bar 131 and e roca es the latter in the guide 136 and in one movement of its reciprocation causes rotation of the pinion 129 which results in a forward swinging movement of the male die member 127 whose forward edge 137 forces the joint 113 into the recess 123 of the female die plate 118 and against the flat surface 125 of the recess of the female die plate. As the male die 127 swings forwardly it engages the dogs 114 and 115 and moves them on their pivots with the result that the arm 138 connected at one end to the upper end of the dog 115' and having its -slotted end 139, embracing the shaft 104 to move toward the forward end of the machine. As the arm 138 moves forwardly of th machine, the cam 140 fixed on the upper roller shaft 104 presents its fiat edge 141 to the roller 142 on the arm 138. YVhen the curved edge 139 of the cam 140 rides over the said roller 142 it forces the arm 138 rearwardly of the machine and consequently throws the dogs 114 and 115 to their normal position. By this time the cams 122 and the main drive shaft have permitted the bed 119 and female die to lower and the rack bar 131 has been returned to its normal position by the cam 134 engaging the roller, 133 at the outer end of the rack barl The reel 84 now draws the connected sheets or plates through the double lock seaming rollers 92 and 9.3 with the Weight of the roller 92 flattening out the material doubled the point 117 to form a double lock seam 126 (Fig. 12) i and the foregoing operations continue until apredetermined number of united sheets or plates have been wound upon the reel 84. It is customary to unite twenty-eight sheets or plates and wind them into a roll for transportation. Ither efore provide means whereby when the twenty-eighthsheet or plate has been weund upon the reel 84 to prevent the seaming of the twenty-ninth sheet or plate to the twenty-eighth one.

said wheel 150 as the joined plates are taken to the reel, the said pawl 151 is provided and connected to this lever 148 for the purpose of engaging a tooth on the ratchet wheel 147 to move the ratchet wheel one step when the shouldered end 149 of said lever 148 is lifted out of the notch 151. This stepby-step movement of the ratchet wheel 129 effects step-by-step movement of the aforesaid wheels 144 and 145, and finally, when twenty-eight plates have been joined together in the manner hereinbefore described, the teeth 146 of said wheels 144 and 145 have been brought into engagement with the teeth 152 projecting from the front pair of levers 106 which forces said front levers 106 to swing forwardly on the front lower roller shaft 96 causing the upper front roller shaft 104 to ride on the aforesaid curved slots 109 of the front levers 106 elevating or lifting the shaft of-the front roller 88 vertically in the slots 87 of the front standards away from the lower roller 89. As the rear levers 107 are connected to the front pair of levers 106 by the aforesaid links 108 and have the curved slots 109 embracing the rear upper roller shaft 105, the upper roller 92 is likewise lifted away from the lower roller 93. The result is that the upper rollers cannot lock the seam at the overlapping ends of the twenty-eighth and twenty-ninth plates and the edge or hook 61 of the twenty-ninth plate 36 may be engaged with the reel 84 to repeat the operation heretofore stated. Thus it will be seen that since the teeth 148 of the ratchet wheel 147 are provided with teeth numbered from one to 28 which coiiperates step by step the pawl 151 carried by the arm 148 swingingly mounted on the shaft 143, that there is provided. means whereby by reference to the ratchet wheel 147 and the position of the pawl 151 with relation to the respective numbered teeth 148 that the number of sheets double lock seamed may be readily determined and when the upper rollers are raised in the manner stated at the time when the overlapping ends of the twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth sheets have been double lock seamed, the clamping member 124 and also the swinging die 127 are lifted out of engagement with the material passing over the body 119 because of the fact that the clamping member 124 and also the swinging die 127 are suspended by the arms 125 and 126 from the aforesaid hanger plates 117 and 118 connected to the upper roller shafts 104 and 105, as has been stated. The lifting means raises the upper rollers immediately after the twenty-seventh double lock seam has passed the rollers 92 and 93 and prior to the entry of the overlapped loose connection into and between the rollers 87 and 88.
The lower rollers 89 and 93 have flanges 153 and 154 respectively at their outer ends movement thereon.
which are adapted to aline with the afore said gage 68 on the table 67 to insure a straight feed of the material through the single and double seaming rollers and the reel 84 is provided with the aforesaid tension drive because of the aforesaid momentary stoppage in feed of material when converting the single lock seam into a double lock seam so as to permit backward or unwinding movement of the reel 84 because of a wheels 161 adjacent its ends over which op erate chains 162 leading to sprocket wheels 011 the outer ends of stub shafts 163 and 161 journaled in brackets 165 secured to the frame B. These stub shafts 163 and 164 have slidably mounted on their inner ends disks 166 provided with a plurality of lingers 167 adapted to project loosely through coinciding apertures formed in their inner fixed disks 168 of the reel. These disks 168 are fixed on the inner ends of the shafts 163 and 164 while the disks 166 have sliding It is on these fingers 167 of the disks 166 that the material is wound and when the aforesaid twenty-eight sheets or plates have been interlocked as described and wound upon the reel it is simply necessary to throw the disks 166 outwardly which draws the fingers 167 outwardly through the apertures of the fixed disks 168 when the wound material is permitted to fall on and roll down the in closed guide 169 and is conveyed thereby to any suitable place, it being the custom when the sheets have been wound into a roll to tie or place bands around the same for shipping purposes. Various forms of reels may be used for this purpose but the one just described is the type of reel preferred and any suitable means may be employed in connection with the reel 84 to discharge the wound or rolled sheets or strips therefrom.
' One means which may be employed is shown particularly in Fig. 7 wherein it will. be seen that I secure to the disks 166 the collars 170 which are slidable on the stub shafts 163 and 164. These collars have grooves 171 in their peripheries in which grooves the forked ends of levers 172 are engaged. These levers 172 have their lower ends diverted inwardly as at 173 and at the joint between the inwardly directed portions 173 and the forked portions 172 of the levers they are pivotally mounted as at 17 l, on the lugs or brackets 175, secured to the frame B. The inwardly projecting portions 173 of the levers 172 preferably overlap. To effect a release of the wound material from the reel I provide an operating lever 176 which is pivotally mounted on one of the plvots 171 of one of the levers 172 and which extends beyond one side of the machine as seen in Fig. 7 By downward movement on the outer end of the lever 17 6 by foot or hand or otherwise, the inner end 177 thereof presses upwardly on the inner ends of the inwardly directed portions 173 of the levers and causes the collars 170 on the stub shafts 163 and 164-. and also the disks 166 to which said collars are connected to moveoutwardly and in this outward movement draw the fingers 167 through the apertures in the disks 168 and release the roll of material therefrom as has been stated.
The machine heretofore described is par ticularly adaptable for operation on sheets or plates of say for instance twenty-e ght inches in length and twenty inches in width and as the machine is equally applicable for performing the functions herein described upon material of greater length and with it may be noted that if the material be of greater width than twenty inches it is sim; ply necessary to shift the standard 165 to the left in Fig. 7 to space the disks 166 and 168 farther from the opposite disks 166 and 168 according to the width of the material. lVhen this adjustment is made the 'corresponding lever 172 is pivoted in either the apertures 177 or 178 according to the width of the material. This is the only change that need be made to' effectively operate on material of greater Width than twenty inches. \Vhere the material is of a length greater than twent -eight inches, and say for instance, ten feet in length, practically the only changes that need be made in the machine are to substitute a larger pulley than that indicated at 155 and to adjust the front standard 23 and the front shearing and edging devices the required distance from the inner standard 2-1 and the inner shearing and edging devices. Thus the speed of the reel may be readily increased or decreased through the instrumentality of various sized pulleys substituted for the one indicated at 155 in the accompanying drawings \Vhether the material be of twentyeight inch length or ten feet length and it is desired that the reels contain more or less than twenty-eight sheets it is simply necessary to change the ratchet Wheel 147 and substitute therefor a ratchet wheel with the number of teeth corresponding to the number of sheets to be wound in the bundle or roll on the reel.
It is evident from the foregoing that a strip of material composed of a plurality of sheets or plates Which have been single lock seamed or otherwise connected together, may be readily fed into the machine and the single loclr'seam manipulated to convert the same into a double lock seam.
I; thns provide an automatically operating machine designed for the purposes here inbefore stated which has the advantage of operating upon the sheet material without destroying its condition or strength and without the use of' solder. In the use of solder the soldering tool must necessarily have such heat as to provide for the effective application of the solder. The heat of the soldering implement has a more or less deteriorating effect upon the coating of metal used particularly for roofing purposes. The metal of this character is usually coated with lead and tin and the application of a heated implementthereto causes melting of the coating. The melted coating is drawn away from the base material, that is, the iron body of the sheets, with the result that the base material, or iron is exposed leaving the iron subject to practically immediate rust. I herefore obviate the necessity of soldering the joint between the united sheets. Furthermore, in the use of solder to effect a firm joint there is more or less danger of leakage at the joint because of climatic conditions contracting and expanding the metal. WVhen the sheets contract and expand it has such action on the solder as to crack itwith the result that the joint becomes defective and leaks. In my invention, I not only eliminate the solder and possibility of exposing the iron by reason of the coating becoming disturbed and removed, but I provide a firm substantial joint possessing such characteristics as to permit of contraction and expansion incident to atmospheric conditions Without danger of causing leakage at the joints between the connected or united sheets.
hat is claimed is:
1. A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for shearing and edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for transferring each sheet after it is sheared and edged into overlapping relation with a sheared and edged sheet, means operable upon the overlapped portions of the sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the overlapping sheets, means fordoubling the mate rial at its single lock seam, means for flattening and double lock seaming the doubled material at the single lock seam, and means for feeding the material through the machine and Winding it into a roll.
2. A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for automatically shearing and edging opposite ends of sheet material, automatic means for transferring each sheet after it is sheared 130 and edged into overlapping relation with a sheared and edged sheet, means operable automatically upon the overlapped portions of the sheet to complete a single lock seam connection between the overlapped sheets, means operable automatically for doubling the material at its single lock seam, automatic means for flattening the doubled matcrial at the single lock seam to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, means for automatically feeding the material through the machine and operating to wind the material into a roll subsequent to the single and double lock seam and doubling operations, and means whereby the re] led material may be discharged from the feeding and roll forming means.
3. A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for edging ends of sheet material, means for placing the edged ends of the sheets of material in overlapping relation, means for feeding the overlapped sheets through the machine, means operating upon the sheets at their overlapped portions to complete a single lock seam at the overlapping connection between said sheets, means operable on the material to double the same at the single lock seam, and means operable upon the single lock seam subsequent to the doubling of the latter to flatten out the doubled portion and provide a double lock seam at the joint between the sheets.
4:. A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for single lock seaming sheetsy together, comprising means for edging the ends of sheet material, means for placing the edged ends of the sheets of material in overlapping relation, means for feeding the overlapped sheets through the machine, means operating upon the sheets at their overlapped portions to complete a single lock seam at the overlapping connections between said sheets, means for converting the single lock seam into a double lock seam comprising means operable upon the material at the single lock seam to double the material, means operable upon the single lock seam subsequent to the doubling of the latter to flatten out the doubled double lock seam at the joint between the sheets, and means for throwing out of oper ation the means which complete both the single and the double lock seaming operations, and also the means which doubles the material, when a predetermined number of sheets have been double lock seamed.
A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for plac ing edged sheets of material in overlapping relation, means for feeding the overlapped sheets through the machine, means operating upon. the sheets at their overlapped portions to complete a single lock seam at the portion and complete a overlapping connection between said sheets, means operable on the material to double the same at the single lock seam, and means operable upon the single lock seam subsequent to the doubling of the latter to flatten out the doubled portion and provide a double lock seam at the joint between the sheets, said feeding means operating to wind the united sheets into a roll, and means whereby the rolled sheets may be discharged from the combined feeding and winding means.
6. A machine of the character described including in combination, means for single lock seaming sheets of material comprising means for edging the ends of sheet material, means for placing the sheets of material in overlapping relation, means for feeding the overlapped sheets through the machine, and means operating upon the sheets at their overlapped portions to complete a single lock seam at the overlapping connection be tween said sheets, means operable 0n the single lock seam to convert the same into a double lock seam comprising means operable on the material to double the same at the single lock seam, and means operable upon the single lock seam subsequent to the doubling of the latter to flatten out the doubled portion to complete a double lock seam at the point between the sheets, means for throwing out of operation the means which completes the single lock seam and also the means which completes the double lock seam, together with the means which doubles the material between the complete formation of the single and double lock seams, the aforesaid means operating to form the united sheets into a roll, and means whereby the rolled sheets may be discharged from the combined feeding and roll forming means.
7. A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with an edged sheet, means operable upon the overlapped portions of the sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the overlapped sheets, means for doubling the material at the single lock seam, means for flattening the doubled portion of the material to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, and means for feeding the material through the machine.
8. A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with an edged sheet, means operable upon the overlapped portions of the sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the overlapped sheets, means for doubling the material at the single lock seam, means for flattening the doubled portion of the material to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, and means for feeding the material through the machine and winding the material into a roll.
9. A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with an edged sheet, means operable upon the overlapped portions of the sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the overlapped sheets, means for doubling the material at the single lock seam, means for flattening the doubled portion of the material to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine and winding the material into a roll, and means operable to discharge the rolled material from the feeding and winding means.
10. A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for edging sheet material, means for overlapping one edged sheet with another edged sheet, means operable upon the overlapped portions of the sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the overlapped sheets, means for doubling the material at the single lock seam, means operable on the doubled material at the single lock seam to flatten out the same and form a double lock seam, and means for feeding the material through the machine.
11. A machine of the character described including in combination, means for single lock seaming sheets of material which comprises means for edging opposite ends of the sheet material, means for transferring each edged sheet into overlapping relation with an edged sheet, and means operable upon the overlapped portions of the sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the overlapped sheets, means for subsequently converting the single lock seam into a double lock seam which comprises means for doubling the material at the single lock seam, means for flattening the doubled material at the single lock seam to complete a double lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine, and means for automatically throwing out of operation at predetermined times the means which completes the single lock seam and also the means which completes the double lock seam, together with the means which doubles the material prior to completing the double lock seam.
12. A machine of the character described including in combination, means for single lock seaming sheets of material together which consists of means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for trans ferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with an edged sheet, and
means operable upon the overlapped portions of the sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the overlapped sheets, means for converting the single lock seam into a double lock seam which consists in means for doubling the material at the single lock seam, and means for flattening the doubled material at the single lock seam to complete a double lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine and winding the same into a roll, and means for automatically throwing out of operation at predetermined times the means which completes the single lock seam and also the means which completes the double lock seam.
13. A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with the edged sheet, means operable upon the overlapped portions of the sheets to complete a single lock seam connection ,between the overlapped sheets, means for converting the single lock seam into a double lock seam comprising means for doubling the material at the single lock seam, and means for flattening the material at the single lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine and Winding it into a roll, means operable to discharge the rolled material from the feeding and winding means, and means for throwing out of operation the means which completes the single lock seam, and also the means which completes the double lock seam, together with the means which doubles the material prior to completing the double lock seam.
14. A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for single lock seaming sheets of material comprising means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for, overlapping one edged sheet with another edged sheet, means operable upon the overlapped sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the sheets, means for converting the single lock seam into a double lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine, and means for throwing out of operation at predetermined times the means which completes the single lock seam and also the means which converts the single lock seam into a double lock seam. v
15. A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for feeding single lock seamed sheets through the machine, and means operable upon the sheets to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam.
16. A machine of the character described including in combination, means for feeding through the machine sheets which have been connected together by a single lock seam, means operable upon the sheets to loo double the seam at the single lock seam, and means operable upon the doubled portion to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam.
17. A machineof the character described, including in combination, means for feeding through the machine sheets which have been connected together by a single lock seam, dies automatically operable to double the material at the single lock seam, and means operable automatically to flatten said doubled portion to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam.
18. A machine of the cha 'acter described including in combination, means for feeding through the machine sheets which have been connected together by a single lock seam, means operable upon the sheets to double the same at the single lock seam, and means operable upon the doubled portion to convert' the single lock seam into a double lock seam, said feeding means also operating to wind the united sheets into a roll.
19. A machine of the character described including in combination, means for feeding through the machine sheets which have been connected together by a single lock seam, means operable upon the sheets to double the same at the single lock seam, means operable upon the doubled portion to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, said feeding means also operating to Wind the united sheets into a roll, and means whereby the roll may be released from the combined feeding and winding means.
20. A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for feeding through the machine sheets which have been connected together by a single lock seam, dies automatically operable to double the material at the single lock seam, and means operable automatically to flatten said doubled portion to convert the single lock seam into a. double lock seam, said feeding means also operating to form the united sheets into a marketable roll.
21. A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for feeding through the machine sheets which have been connected together by a single lock seam, dies automatically operable to double the material at the single lock seam, means operable automatically to flatten said doubled portion to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, said feeding means also operating to form the united sheets into a marketable roll, and levers operable to effect a release of the wound roll from the combined feeding and winding means.
22. A machine of the character described for operating upon a plurality of sheets which have been connected together by single lock seam joints comprising means for automatically doubling the material at the single lock seam joint, means for positioning said joints for said doubling operation and means operable automatically upon the doubled material to flatten the same against the body of the material and convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam.
23. A machine of the character described for operating upon a plurality of sheets which have been connected together by single lock seam joints comprising a vertically movable female die and a swinging male (lie operating to double the material at the single lock seam, and means subsequently operable on the doubled material to flatten the doubled material into the same plane with the body of the material and convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam.
24:. The combination with means for converting a single lock seam connection between united sheets into a double lock seam comprising a male and a female die auto matically operable to double the material at the single lock seam, means for positioning the single lock seams for said doubling operation, and means to operate automatically upon the doubled material at the single lock seam to force the doubled material into the same plane with the body of the material and convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam.
25. Means for converting a single lock seam connection between united sheets into a double lock seam comprising means to clamp the material, said means including a female die, a male die arranged for cooperation with the female die to draw upon one of the sheets to double the material at the single lock seam, and means operable upon the doubled portion of the material at the single lock seam to convert the latter into a double lock seam.
26. A machine of'the character described, including in combination, means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for placing each sheet after it is edged into oven lapping relation with another edged sheet, means operable upon the overlapped sheets at their point of overlapping to complete a sin gle lock seam, means consisting of male and female dies for doubling the material at the single lock seam, means for subsequently operating upon the doubled portion of the material to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, and means for feeding the material through the machine 27. A machine of thecharacter described including in combination, means for shearing and edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for placing each sheet after it is sheared and edged into overlapping relation with a sheared and edged sheet, means operable upon the overlapped sheets at their point of overlapping to complete a single lock seam, means consisting of male and f male dies for doubling the material at the single lock seam, means for subsequently operating upon the doubled portion of the material to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine, means for automatically throwing the male and female dies into cooperative relation subsequent to the formation of the single lock seam and to throw the male and female dies out of cooperative relation prior to the completion of the double lock seain.
28. A machine of the character described including in combination means for single lock seaming sheets of material comprising means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for placing each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with an edged sheet, and means operable upon the overlapped sheets at their point of overlapping to complete a single lock seam, means for converting the single lock seam into a double lock seam comprisingmale and female dies to double the material atathe single lock seam, and means for subsequently operating upon the doubled portion of the material to complete the double lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine, means for automatically throwing the male and female dies into cooperative relation subsequent to the formation of the single lock seam and to throw the male and female dies out of cooperative relation prior to the complete. formation of the double lock seam, and means operable to throw the means which completes the single and also the means which completes the double lock seam out of operation when a predetermined number of sheets have been double lock seamed.
29. A machine of the character described including in combination, means for single lock seaming sheets of material comprising 11161118 for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for placing one edged sheet into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, means for feeding the overlapped sheets through the machine, and
means operable upon the overlapped portions of the sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the sheets, means to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam comprising means for doubling the material at the single lock seam, and means operable upon the doubled portion to complete the double lock seam, said feeding means being operable to wind the united sheets into a roll, means for throwing the means which completes the single lock seam and also the means which completes the double lock seam out of operation when a predetermined number of sheets have been double lock sea-med, and means to effect a discharge of the roller material from the feeding and roll forming means whereby a separation between the last of the predetermined number of sheets to be united and the following overlapped sheets is effected so that said following sheets may be con nected to the combined feeding and roll forming means to repeat the aforesaid operations. v
30. A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, means operable upon the overlapped portions of the sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the sheets at their overlapped points, means operable upon the material at the single lock seam to dispose the single lock seam at an angle to the plane of the material, means subsequently operableupon the material at the single lock seam to convert the latter into a double lock seam, and means for feeding the material through the machine and winding it into a roll.
31. A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for feeding through the machine sheets which have been connected together by a single lock seam, means operable upon the material at the single lock seam to dispose the seam at an angle to the plane of the material, and means subsequently operable automatically to operate upon the angularly disposed single lock seam to convert the latter into a double lock seam.
32. Means for converting a single lock seam connection between united sheets into a double lock seam, comprising means to feed the united sheets into the machine, a vertically movable die plate having a recess therein provided with a straight flat wall, and'a swinging die having a portion adapted to force the single lock seam into said recess and against said straight flat face of the recess to dispose the single lock seam at an angle with relation to the body of the sheets and means to automatically operate said dies.
33. Means for converting a single lock seam connection between united sheets into a double lock seam, comprising means to feed the united sheets into the machine, a vertically movable die plate having a recess therein provided with astraight flat wall, and a swinging die having a portion adapted to force the single lock seam into said recess and against said straight fiat face of the recess to dispose the single lock seam at an angle with relation to the body of the sheets, and means subsequently automatically operable upon the single lock seam to 1 force the latter into the same plane with the body of the sheets and thereby convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam.
3st. Means for converting a single lock seam connection between united sheets into a double lock seam, comprising means to feed the united sheets into the machine, means operable upon the sheets at the single lock seam to deflect the latter into a plane at an angle to the plane of the body of the sheets, and means'subsequently operable autom atically upon the angularly disposed single lock seam to force it into a plane parallel with the united sheets and thereby convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam.

36. A machine of the character described, including in combination, a frame, means for edging opposite ends of the sheet material means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, rollers operable upon the overlapped sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the sheets, a gear connection between said rollers, a drive shaft journaled in said frame, a driving connection between said shaft and one of the aforesaid rollers, an operative connection between the edging means and one of said rollers, an operative connection between the transferring means and the drive shaft, means operable automatically to dispose the single loclr seam at an angle to the plane of the sheet material, a second set of rollers operable upon the material to force the angularly disposed single seam parallel with the'sheets to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, a driving connection between the drive shaft and one of said second set of rollers, a gear connection between the sccond set of rollers, and means operatively connected with the main drive shaft to automatically feed the material through the machine.
37. A machine of the character described, including in combination, a frame, means for edging opposite ends of the sheet mate rial, means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, rollers operable upon the overlapped sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the sheets, a gear connection between said rollers, a drive shaft ournaled in said frame, a driving connection between said shaft and one of the aforesaid rollers, an operative connection between the edging means and one of said rollers, an operative connection between the drive shaft and the transferring means, means operable automatically to dispose the single lock seam at an angle to the plane of the sheet material, a second set of rollers operable upon the material to force the angularly disposed single seam parallel with the sheetsito convert the single lock seanr into a double lock seam, a driving connection between the drive shaft and one of said second set of rollers, a gear connection between the second set of rollers, means operatively connected with the main drive shaft to automatically feed the material through the machine, and means for automatically throwing said sets of rollers out of opera tive relation at predetermined times.
38. A machine of the character described, including in combination, a frame, means for edging opposite ends of the sheet mate rial, means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, rollers operable upon the overlapped sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the sheets at their points of overlapping, a gear connection between said, rollers, a drive shaft journaled in said frame, a driving connection between said shaft and one of the aforesaid rollers, an operative connection. between the edging means and one of said rollers, an operative connection between the drive shaft and the transferring means, means operable automatically to dispose the single lock seam at an angle to the plane of the sheet material, a second set of rollers operable upon the material to force the angularly disposed single seam parallel with the sheets to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, a driving connection be tween the drive shaft and one of said second set of rollers, a gear connection between the second set of rollers, and means operatively connected with the main drive shaft to auto matically feed the material through the machine, said feeding means also winding the material into a marketable roll.
39. A machine of the character described,
including in combination, a frame, means for edging opposite ends of the sheet mate rial, means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, rollers operable upon the overlapped sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the sheets at their points of overlapping, a gear connection between said rollers, a drive shaft our naled in said frame, a driving connection between said shaft and one of the aforesaid rollers, an operative connection between the edging means and one of said rollers, an operative connection between the drive shaft and transferring means, means operable automatically to dispose the single lock seam at an angle to the plane of the sheet material, a second set of rollers operable upon the material to force the angularly disposed single seam parallel with the sheets to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, a driving connection between the drive shaft and one of said second set of rollers, a gear connection between the secondset of rollers, and means operatively connected with the main drive shaft to automatically feed the material through the machine, said feeding means also winding the material into a marketable roll, and means whereby the rolled material on the combined feeding and winding means may be discharged therefrom.

A machine of the character described, including in combination, a frame, means for edging opposite ends of the sheet material, means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, rollers operable upon the overlapped sheets to operate'upon. the overlapped portions of the sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the sheets, a gear connection between said rollers, a drive shaft journaled in said frame, a driving connection between said shaft and one of the aforesaid rollers, an operative connection between the edging means and one of said rollers, an operative connection between the drive shaft and the transferring means, means operable automatically to dispose the single lock seam at an angle to the plane of the sheet material, a second set of rollers operable upon the material to force the angularly disposed single seam parallel with the sheets to convert the single lock seam into a doublelock seam, a driving connection between the drive shaft and one of said second set of rollers, a gear connection between the second set of rollers, means operatively connected with the main drive shaft to automatically feed the material through the machine, means for automatically throwing said sets of rollers out of operative relation at predetermined times, said feeding means also winding the material into a roll, and means whereby the roll of material may be discharged from said feeding and winding means.

A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for placing each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, means operable upon the overlapped sheets at their point of overlapping to complete a single lock seam, means operable upon the single lock seam to double the sheet material at the single lock seam,
means operable upon the doubled portion at the single lock seam to convert the latter into a double lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine and to wind it into a roll, and means operable to prevent the completion of single and double lock seams when a predetermined number of sheets have been wound into a roll and thereby indicate that a predetermined number of sheets have been double lock seamed.
42. A machine of the character described including in combination, means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for placing each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, and means operable upon the overlapped sheets to complete a single lock seam,
means for subsequently converting the single lock seam into a double lock seam comprising means operable to double the sheet material at the single lock seam, andmeans operable upon the doubled portion at the single lock seam to complete a double lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine and to wind it into a roll, and means for throwing out of opera tion the means which completes the single lock seam and also the means which completes the double lock seam when a predetermined number of sheets have been double lock seamed and wound into a roll, and thereby indicate that the predetermined number of sheets have been double lock seamed;

A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, a set of rollers operable upon the overlapped portions of the sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the overlapped sheets, means for disposing the single lock seam at an angle to the plane of the sheet, a set of rollers operable to flatten the angularly disposed single seam into parallel relation with the sheets to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine, and means for throwing said sets of rollers out of operative relation at predetermined times.
44. A machine of, the character described including in combination, means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, upper" and lower rollers operable -upon the overlapped portion of the sheets to complete a single lock seam at the overlapped connection between the sheets, means for doubling the material at its single lock seam, upper and lower rollers operable to flatten the doubled material at the single lock seam to convert the latter into a double lock seam, means for feeding the material throughthe machine, and means operable automatically connection between the sheets, means for doubling the material at its single lock seam, upper and lower rollers operable to flatten the doubled material at the single lock seam to convert the latter into a double lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine, and means operable automatically to lift the upper rollers out of operative relation with the corresponding lower rollers and simultaneously throw said doubling means out of operation.
46. A machine of the character described including in combination, means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, upper and lower rollers operative upon the overlapped portions of the sheets to complete a single lockseam connection between the overlapped sheets, means for doubling the material at its single lock seam, upper and lower rollers for operation upon the doubled portion of thematerial to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine, and means to indicate step by step the formation of each double lock seam.

"A machine of the character described including in combination, means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, upper and lower rollers operable upon the overlapped portions of the sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between the overlapped sheets, means for doubling the material at its single lock seam, upper and lower rollers for operation upon the doubled portion of the material to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine, and means to indicate step by step the formation of each double lock seam and for simultaneously throwing said rollers out of operation when a predetermined number of sheets have been double lock seamed.

A machine of the character described, including in combination, means for edging opposite ends of sheet material,means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, rollers operable upon the overlapped portions of the sheets to complete a single lock seam connection between said sheets,
means for doubling the material at the single lock seam, rollers operable upon the doubled portion to convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine and winding it into a roll, levers connected to one of the first-named rollers, levers con nected to one of the second-mentioned rollers, connections between said levers, and means operable automatically to shift said levers and throw the first and second-mentioned rollers out of operation when a predetermined number of sheets have been double lock seamed.

A machine of the character described including in combination, means for single lock seaming sheets of material comprising means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for transferring each edged sheet into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, rollers operable upon the overlapped portions of the sheets to compress the material and thereby complete a single lock seam connection between said overlapped sheets, means for converting the single lock seam into a double lock seam comprising means for doubling the material at the single lock seam, rollers operable upon the doubled portion to compress the latter and thereby convert the single lock seam into a double lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine, and winding it into a roll, levers connected to one of the first-named rollers, levers connected to one of the second mentioned rollers, connections between said levers, and a ratchet mechanism to indicate step by step the number of double lock seams formed in the ma terial, and means operating in conjunction with the aforesaid levers to operate the lat ter and thereby throw both sets of compressng rollers out of operation.
50. A machine of the character described including in combination, means for single lock seaming sheets of material, comprising means for edging opposite ends of sheet material, means for transferring each sheet after it is edged into overlapping relation with another edged sheet, rollers for compressing the sheets at their points of overlapping to complete a single lock seam at the connection between the sheets, means for converting the single lock seam into a double lock seam comprising means for doubling the material at the single lock seam and rollers operable upon the doubled portion to compress the same and thereby complete the formation of the double lock seam, means for feeding the material through the machine and winding it into a roll, levers con nected to one of the first mentioned rollers, levers connected to one of the second men tioned rollers, connections between said levers, a ratchet mechanism to indicate step by step the number of double lock seams
