I STA MP. APPLICATION FILED Nov. 11, 1515.

FIG= i WITNESSES iso WILLIAM J. PANNIER, an, or PITTSBURGH, rENnsYLvAnIA, ASSIGNOR To-rnnmnn. BROS. STAMP comrm, or PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A conroan rron or PENNSYLVANIA.
The invention has in view to provide, in.
a stamp in which the units are removably inserted, as in dating stamps or the like, a
holding base for the units having a recessed dove-tail or wedge-shaped cavity, and units having correspondingly shaped insertible' bases, so designed as to provide for contraction of the base to facilitate insertion and removal, and suflicient expanding action within the wedge-shaped socket to insure holding retention therein during normal operation.
One embodiment of the invention, in its simpler form, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hand stamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional View taken on the line H. II. of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the operation of inserting or removing .one of the units. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of one of the units, removed.
While the invention is articularly adapted for hand stamps, utilizing. rubber units or inserts, it will be readily understood that it is applicable to any of the various wellknown constructions of stamping or printing devices utilizing removable rubber inserts and a suitable supporting base.
In the drawings, the main base 2, which may be of metal, wood, or other suitable material, is provided'with a holding handle 3, or any other suitable actuating means. The base 2 is provided with a receiving cavity 4 for the stamping units or inserts 5 having on their operative faces letters or figures or other suitable devices, adapted to be inked and stamped upon any surface.
The inserts 5 are preferably made of rubber or other suitable material having the desired resiliency for the printing letters, figures, etc., and acting as a cushion inthe usual way, and also providing, in the attaching base portion of the insert, for exv STAMP.

Application filed November 11, 1915. Serial No. 60,861. Y
,,The middle portion of the unit or insert base is cut away or hollowed out, as at 8, whereby to provide the two diverging base members 9, 9. The inner walls of the cavity 8 substantially conform as to their inclination to the outer walls 7, and the base members 9 are thus easily compressed together, as in Fig. 3,so as to render their outer faces temporarily substantially straight and parallel from top to bottom, thereby facilitating either insertion or removal of the insert. I
When inserted, as in Fig. 2, the base mem-- bers 9 will spring outwardly against the sloping walls 6, practically filling the cavity, and firmly retaining the insert in position during ordinary use.
As will be observed, the inner contacting bottom faces of the base members 9 are preferably flat across their width, providing a substantially flat confronting hearing, so that the insert is practically solid from bottom to top, and the rubber is-in a con-- dition of normal expanded shape'within the cavity. I thus provide, within the base, a
' firm holding engagement between the base and the insert, and beyond the face of the base and the inserted root portion of the insert, the extended ortion of the unit having the desirable resilience and compressibility,
combined in a. single holding base with permanently attached printing units, dependingnpon the entire stamping capacity of the devlce.
The invention 'may be variously changed in other respectsas to detail construction, design, or other features, depending upon the requirements of thevmakeror user, but all such changes are to be considered as within the scope of the appended claims. What I claim is;
1. A stamplng device comprising a hold ,panding resiliency within the socket 4.
ing base having an inwardly enlarged wedge-shaped socket, and a resilient printi'ng unit having "a correspondingly shaped base formed of two normally separated resilient parts inserted therein. 7
2. A stamping device comprising a holding base having an undercut inwardly flaring socket, and a resilient printing unit having a correspondingly shaped base formed of two normally separated resilient parts inserted therein. a
, 3. A stamping dei'ice comprising a holding base having an inwardly enlarged socket, and a resilient printing unit having a base formed of two normally separated divergent parts adapted to be ressed together and inserted therein, an to re-act intp holding engagement with the socket wa ls.
4. A stamping device comprising a holding base having an inwardly enlarged socket, and a printing unit having a correspondingly shaped base formed of two normally separated compressible resilient parts inserted therein.
5. A stamping device comprising aholding base having a socket provided with in wardly diverging walls, and a printing unit having a projecting stamping portion and an integral base formed of two normally separated resilient holding parts 'divergin from the stamping portion and inserte therein. g
6. Astamping device comprising a holdto bring their outer faces into the planes of the sides of the stamping portion and to resiliently react to normal position.
8. A-rubber printing unit of the class described having an integral base formed of two normally separated parts having diverging outer and inner faces providing an intervening ll-sha-ped space and adapted to be compressed together for insertion into a correspondingly shaped receiving socket andnto resiliently re-act "to normal position.
9. A rubber printing unit of the class described having a projecting-stamping portion and an integral base formed of two normally separated parts diverging anguing portion.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
