DOOR-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 18, 1916.
Application filed March 16, 1915. Serial No. 14,661.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL FRnNoH, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Mammoth, in the county of Shasta and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in door locks.
An object of the invention is to provide a lock for doors, more especially car and barn doors, and in which a key of special construction is adapted for releasing the locking mechanism to permit the door to be opened.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock for doors in which the looking mechanism is completely hidden from view and the member for unlocking the same adapted to cooperate therewith in a manner difficult for one not familiar with the lock to operate the same.
With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, com bination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then claimed.
In the accompanying drawing in which is shown the preferred embodiment of the present invention and to which reference is had herein by like characters designating corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a swinging door with the present lock attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View taken on line III-III of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of a portion of the sliding bolt and keeper, with the locking pins elevated to inoperative position. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the handle for releasing the operating mechanism, and, Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the locking pins.
Briefly described, the present invention aims to provide a lock for swinging doors or sliding doors of car or barn construction and in which there is provided a sliding hollow bolt and a keeper therefor, and wherein the keeper carries key-operated sliding pins cooperating with the sliding bolt to hold the same immovable relative to the keeper to thereby lock the door.
Referring more in detail to the accompanymg drawings and particularly to Fig. l, the reference numeral 10 designates a door of suitable construction, hinged as at 11 to the support 12, which may be either a barn or a car, and for clearness in the present description, the same will be referred to as a car'.
Th locking mechanism for the door 10 includes the sliding bolt 13 and the keeper M.- A pair of spaced guides 15 are carried by the door lO and constitute a support for the bolt 13. The guides 15 are secured to the door 10 by the fastening bolts 16 while similar bolts 16 fasten the keeper to the support 12.
The locking bolt 13 is of hollow construction and preferably rectangular in crosssection so that the same will not be permltted to revolve in the guides 15, as the openings in the guides are of similar shape.
'One end of the bolt 13, is closed as at 17 while the upper wall thereof is of increased cross-sectional area and is beveled at its front end-as at '18 to provide a ready entrance into the rectangular opening 1n the keeper 14:.
The keeper 14 is provided with a removable cover 19 secured thereto by the fastenng screws 20 while the upper end thereof 1s provided with recesses 21 spaced by a vertical partition 22, the partition providing a support for the upper fastening bolt 16. The recesses 21 communicate with openings 23' that extend downwardly through the upper section of the keeper and are preferably arranged as shown in plan view in Fig. 3. Locking pins 24 are mounted in the openings 23 and carry enlarged heads 25 that are received in the recesses 21, which recesses constitute guides for the heads.
The forward end of the locking bolt 13 has the upper wall thereof provided with spaced openings 26 that are adapted to register with the openings 23 and into which openings 26 the locking pins 21 are received to thereby prevent relative movement of the locking bolt 13 and the keeper 14:. The key for removing the pins 24: from the bolt openings 26 is shown in detail in Fig. 5, and comprises the handle portion 27 carrying a head 28 at one end thereof and upon which head are provided projecting pins 29. These pins are suitably disposed on the head 28 so that when the head 28 is positioned in the open hollow end of the bolt, the said pins 29 may move into the lower flaring ends of the openings 26 of the bolt, as shown in Figs. 1 and 1, to engage the pins 24- and elevate the same to the position shown in Fig. 4, at which time the bolt may be shifted longitudinally, either by gripping the same or by the key to remove the beveled end 18 from the keeper. By reference to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the lower ends of the pins 24 do not extend completely through the bolt openings 26, and by this arrangement and the flaring lower ends of the openings 26 the pins 29 upon the key 27 may be easily positioned in the openings.
In operation, the bolt 13 has a beveled end thereof projected into the keeper 14L, and'the pins 24 normally projecting downwardly through the openings 23 ride upon the beveled end 18 of the bolt until the same reach the position shown in Fig. 1, with the operating handle removed, at which time the pins by their own weight, will move downwardly into the bolt openings 26 and prevent relative movement of the bolt and keeper. It is to be noted that the pins are out of longitudinal alinement so that the rear pins will not enter the forward open ings in the bolt and prevent the correct operation of the device. The belt is removed from the keeper in a manner as above described.
While I have shown and described the Copies of this patent may be obtained for preferred embodiment of the present invention, I do not wish to confine myself to the exact details of construction shown, as various forms, modifications and arrangements of the parts as shown may be had without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
W hat I claim as new is A device of the class described comprising a door and support, guides carried by the door, a keeper carried by the support, a
bolt closed at one end and open at the other end slidably mounted in said guides, vertically movable pins carried by said keeper, there being openings in said bolt adjacent the open end thereof adapted to receive said pins when the bolt is projected within the keeper to prevent withdrawal of the same, the lower ends of the openings being flared outwardly and the lower ends of the movable pins being spaced from the lower ends of the openings and a key carrying a plurality of tapering pins adapted to be in serted through the open end of the bolt with the pins carried thereby received in the flared openings to engage the slidable pins and move the same upwardly out of the bolt openings.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of wo witnesses.
