To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST F. SOHURMAN,
a citizen" of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of the Bronx, State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Universal Joint, of which the fol-.
' lowing is a full,clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object to provide a universal joint having its two parts connected by a ball and socket joint, one of the parts having a cylindrical portion with a plurality of slots spaced apart and disposed longitudinally of the axis of the part, pins which extend from the other part, being movably disposedin the slots. The sides of each ofthe slots diverge for a distance from its center in the direction of its ends so that the pins which fit the. slots at their centers, may move laterally for a distance relatively to the part having the slots, as the pins move in the slots toward their ends. With'this construction the parts, when they are in alinement, will act as a flexible coupli'ng,
while the pins and the width of their corre sponding slots between their centers and their ends, will arrange for the rotation of one of the parts by the other, when the axes of the parts are disposed at any desired.

'34,,andfthe pins 19 may be prevented from turning inthe other direction by the shoule ders 35 which engagethe outer sides of the 'concavo-convex member 20. In the base 21 there is an opening 36 in which is disposed a rod 37, the rod 37' being held in position by a set screw 38.
The rod 3 7 with the base 21, may be moved to the position shown by the dotted lines shown in Fig. 1, and when in this position, the rod 37 will be rotated by the rotation of the rod 13, for the cylinder 15 at the sides of the slots 16 will engage one or more of @the pins 19 to rotate the concavo-convex.

However, if desired, the arms may be made integral with the base. In other respects the modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5"corresponds with the invention as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings. It will beunderstood that the pins and the slots may be arranged so that the joint will operate with the rods 13 and 37 disposed at any desired angle less than ninety When there is no thrust on the rods or shafts 13 and 37 the ball and socket joint may be omitted. When the rods or shafts 13 or 37 are disposed in alinement, all the'pins will be m the narrow portions of the slots and the device will act as a flexible coupling. Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a universal joint, a hollow member having longitudinally extending slots, the
sides of each of the slots diverging for a distance from its center-in the direction of its ends, a member disposed .in the hollow member, pins on the second member and disposed in the slots, a ring disposed around the hollow memberto which the pins'are secured, and means to prevent the longitudinal move ment of the members relatively to each other.
2. In a universal joint, a'hollow member having longitudinally disposed gslots, the sidesof each of the slots diverging for a distance from its center in the direction of its ends, a member disposed in the hollow member. pins on the second mentioned member degrees. 1

3. In a universaljoint, a hollow member having longitudinally disposed-slots spaced around the hollow member to which the pins apart, a member havingan extended base 7 and disposed in the hollow member, pins on the last mentioned member and disposed in the slots, a ring disposed around the' hollow member, to which the pins are secured,
and arms connecting the ring with the base of the second mentioned member, for holding the ring rigid relatively to the second mentioned member.
4. In a universal joint, a hollow member being an orifice on the conca-vo-convex memher through which the screw may be inserted.
5. In a universal joint, a hollow member having longitudinally disposed slots and a head, the sides of each of the slots diverging from the center in the direction of its ends, the hollow, member having a concave hear ing extending from its head and provided with a threaded orifice, a ball disposed in the concave bearing, a concavo-convex member secured to the ball anddisposed between the slots on the hollow member and the concave bearing, pins on the concavo-convex member disposed in the slots, a companion bearing member having an orifice and disposed around the ball and against the first mentioned concave bearing, and a screw disposed in the orifice and meshing in the threaded orifice, there being an orifice in the concavo-convex member through which the screw may be inserted.
6. In a universal joint, a hollow member having longitudinally disposed slots and a head, the hollow member having a concave bearing extending from the head and provided with a threaded orifice, a ball disposed in the concave bearing, a concave-convex member secured to the ball and disposed be tween the slots in the hollow member and the concave bearing, pins on the concavoconvex member disposed in the slots, a companion bearing member having an orifice and disposed around the ball and against the In testimony whereof I have signed my concave bearing, a screw disposed in the 'name to this specification in the presence of orifice and meshing in the threaded orifice, two subscribing Witnesses.
