'SURFACING-ZROLL.
Specification of 'Jtetters Patent.
Patented July 18, 191
Original application filed'Novemlier 12, 1915, Serial No. 61,007. Divided and this application filed-February 14,1916. Serial No. 76,099. v
' a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surfacing-Rolls, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to surfacing machines designed for producing smooth surfaces on floors, bowling alleys and the like, and has more particular reference to the structure of the surfacing roll itself, this application being a division of Surfacing rolls of this general character are customarily of cylindrical form and are provided on their peripheries with a longitudinally extending and usually diagonally d1sposed Tslot through which the ends of the sheet of abrading material, such as sand paper, emery paper or the like, are inserted.
Clamping rollers arranged within the cylinder beneath and parallel with the slot are adapted to clamp the inserted ends of the abrading sheet so that the sheet is securely held upon the periphery of the roll. Prior to my present invention these clamping rollers, so far as I am aware, have been journaled in the ends of the cylinder in such a way that it was necessary, in order to remove the rollers for repairs or other purposes, to remove one end of the cylindrical surfacing roll. Since the ends of the surfacing roll are rigidly and securely fastened to the central shaft and to the surrounding cylindrical walls the removal of an end necessitated the dismantling anddisassembling of the roll structure and involved the expenditure of considerable time and labor.
One of the primary objects of my present invention is to provide a surfacing roll in which the clamping rollers will be so mounted thatthey may be readily removed from the interior of the roll without dismantling or disassembling the roll structure.
Another object of my invention is to provide a roll, the body ofwhich will be-of integral construction as distinguished from built up structures comprising independent side and end walls such as have been previously employed.
vention will be readily appreciated as the same becomes better .understood by refer ence to the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a surfacing roll embodying my invention, .certain portions being broken away to show the underlying parts; and
I roll is mounted and by which it is rotated my prior application, Serial No. 61,007, filed November 12, 1915, forsurfacing 'machlne.
when in operation. The roll itself, so far as .the mounting of the clamping rollers is concerned, may be of any preferred con- ;struction and material, but for purposes of .6, the walls'being of cast metal construction which provides a strong and durable roll at relatively low cost.
The sheet of abrading material 7 which may be of emery paper, sand paper or the like, 1s disposed around the periphery of the cyllnder in the usual manner, the ends of the sheet being inserted through the slot 8 extending from end to end of the roll in a d agonal direction. Beneath and parallel with the slot 8 are disposed the clamping rollers 9 and 11, one or both of which has a fiat face 12 which when opposed to the other roller provides a space through which the ends 13 of the abrading sheet may be inserted as shown in Fig. 2. One roller, in this instance roller 11, has a squared shank pro ecting beyond the end wall of the roll to receive a wrench by which the roll may be rotated so as to firmly clamp and hold the ends of the abrading sheet in position, as shown in Fig. 2. The left hand ends of the clamping rollers are journaled in suitable bearings 1a and 15 formed in the end wall 5, while the opposite ends are journaled in bearings formed in a plate 16 removably secured to the end wall 1 by screws or bolts 17 f In order to accommodate the plate or block 16 the end wall 4 is provided with a suitable opening 18 adapted to receive the block and the wall surrounding the opening is depressed as indicated at 19 to permit the peripheral flange 21 of the block to lie flush with the outer face of the wall 4:.
It will be obvious that whenitis desired to remove the clamping rollers for any purpose it is not necessary to dismantle or disassemble the entire roll, but'by simply unfastening the screws 17 the plate or block 16 may be removed and the rollers may be withdrawn through the opening 18. In order to reassemble the rollers it is only necessary to insert them through the opening 18,
position them in the bearings 14 and 15 in the end wall 5 and then replace the plate or 'bl0clr16 and secure it in position by the screws. My lmproved manner of mounting the clamplng rollers provides a construction which can be economically manufactured and readily assembled, and while I prefer to employ a cast metal cylinder as a surfacing roll it should be manifest that this manner of mounting the clamping rollers can be employed in connection with surfacing rolls of any preferred construction, such as built up metal structures or even wooden rolls if desired. My invention therefore is not limited to the structural details shown and described but is capable of considerable modification and variation without departing from the scope thereof as defined in the following claims.
- ed'into said cylinder, and a block removably closing said opening and provided with bearlngs adapted to recelve the opposite ends of said members, said members being removable from the cylinder through said opening upon removal of said block.
2. A surfacing roll comprising permanently connected end and side walls, a clamping device disposed within and extending longitudinally of said cylinder, one of said end Walls being provided with an opening through which said clamping device may be introduced into and Withdrawn from said cylinder, and a removable member normally closing said opening, said member and the opposite end Wall of the cylinder being constructed to normally support said clamping device in operative position.
