To a whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY J. NoTZ and Gronau A. Riiiivn, citizens of the United Ktates,v residing at Middletown, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expansible Chucks, of which the following is a specification;
The present invention relates to improvements in expansible chucks for centering and holding tubular work.
An important objectof the invention is .to provide apparatus ofthe above mentioned liipthe accompanying drawings forming,

The stand 5 is provided near its forward edge with a screw-threaded opening 7, receiving an adjustable stop screw or element 8, projecting upwardly beyond the same,
as shown. The ynumeral 9v .designates the tubular body portion of the chuck, having a longitudinally extending bore 10. The lower ,nd of the tubular body portion 9 is closed bv a reduced and exterior-ly screw-threaded portion 11, which engages within a screwthreaded opening formed in a base 12. This base is provided with a horizontal knuckle 13, adapted to be arranged betweenv the' knuckles 6V, and having a cylindrical opening 14.l The body portion 9 provided near its upper end with aiijexhaust, port 15, adapted to communicate with the atmosphere and at its lower end with an exhaust port 16, to communicate with the atmospliere.y Arranged upon the top of lthe tubu lar body portion9 is a .cap 17, heldthereon by screws 18 or. other'suitable devices.
The tubular body portion 9 is provided near its lupper. and lower ends with preferablyequidstantly spaced horizontal radial openings 19, there being three of these openings in each set. Mounted to reciprocate within each set of openings 19 are three reciprocatory or expansible clamping 'ja-ws or bolts 20, as shown. The jaws 2O are providedat their outer ends with transverse grooves 21, receiving a curved leaf spring 22. The ends of this leaf spring are bent inwardly, forming hooked portions 23, disposed within one of the grooves 21,4 and extending into a vdepression .24: thereof.- The function of this spring is,4 to normally hold the jaws 20 in the inner position' and re-r -turn them to this position and to :hold
them againsty turningmovement upon their longitudinal axes. f v

ing their outer ends tapered and decreasing in diameter outwardly, to 'contact with the inner or ,inclined tapered ends of the jaws 20, as shown. which serves to pivotally connect the body portion 9 with the support 5. The pipe 35 is stationary-and one end thereof is connected with a pressure supply conduit... As more clearly shown in Fig. 3, the pipe 35 is provided with a plug 37, dividing the same Vinto an inlet portion' 38 and an outlet portion- 39. The inlet portion 38 of the pipe has an opening or port 40 adapted for registration with the 4port 34, when the body portion 9 is swung to the vertical position,
as clearlyillustrated in Fig. 1. When this l takes place, pressure is supplied to the chamber 32, as is obvious. Communicating with the exhaust portion 39 of the pipe 35 is a` surface groove 41, the free end of which is in rcircumferential alinement with the port 40 but of course has no communication therewith. 'The free endv of this groove 41 is adapted to communicate with the port 34., when the body portion 9 is swung to an approximately .horizontal position, thus allowing the pressure within the chamber 32 to exhaust to the atmosphere.`

In the use of the device, the body portion 91s moved to amore or less horizontal position, whereby the chamber 32 exhausts to i the atmosphere or has in communication i with the source of pressure The work 42 may then be placed upon the` body portion 9 and the work and body por.` 'f on swung to the verticalposition. When lie vertical position is reached, which may be defined by the adjustment of the screw 8, the port 4U will register with the port 34 and pressure, such as compressed air, will pass through the inlet portion 38 of the pipe 35,

This pressure will move the pistons 25 outwardly and their tapered ends 2G will expand thejaws 20, causing them to move outwardly into clamping contact with the work. To remove` the work 'the body portion 9 Vis swung to the horizontal position, whereby the port 34 is movedv out of registration with the port 40 and into registration with the free end of the groove 41. The pressure will now exhaust from chamber 32, through port 33, port 34, groove 41 and through the 'outlet portion 390i the pipe 35 to the atmosphere. The spring 31 will now move the pistons 25 inwardly, allowing the jaws 2G to move inwardly under the action of the springs 22., Theworlr 42 may now be conveniently removed.

size, and arrangement o f parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the. scope of the Sybjoined claims. Y

In. an expansible 'chuck of the character described, a `'tubular body portion having sets oi approximately-'radial openingsV formed therein which areA longitudinally spaced upon the tubular body portion, jaws mounted to'slide within the approximately radial openings, a pair of pistons. mounted to move longitudinally within the tubular body portion and adapted to contact withV the setsof jaws to move them outwardly,
and 'means for 'introducing pressure into the tubular body portion between the pistons to etecttheir movement.
V2. 1n an expansible chuck oi the character described, a tubular body portion having` spaced sets of approximately radial `openings formed therein and a pressure supply port discharging into the interior of the tubular body portion between the sets of approximately radial openings, jaws mounted 4to slide within the approximately radial openings, a pair 'of pistons mounted within the tubular body portion upon opposite sides' of the outlet end 'of the pressure supply port to be moved in opposite directions by the pressure and adapted to move the jaws outwardly, and means to supply pressure to the' ports.
