- which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a synchronizing apparatus.
The organization ofthe invention. comprises means for reflecting an index mark or numeral of the film of a picture machine to a tell-tale plate adjacent to a moving indicator or rotating dial with index marks or numerals, which indicator or dial is actuated preferably intermittently by the mechanism of a talking machine, so that the two machines are synchronized by maintaining the reflected index mark or numeral and the corresponding index mark or numeral on the dial in proper relation to each other.

A driving crank 64 with its usual appurtenances propels the picture record 65 having the index numerals 0, 0, &c., 9, 9, &c., on one edge thereof, a numeral being located between a pair ofthe gripping holes for each picture of the film, each consecutive foot of the film having consecutive numerals, so

With the mainopening 68 in the front 61 of the picture machine is formed a secondary opening 69, and a swing door 70 is hinged to a cover plate 71 having a main .opening 72 and secondary opening 73 which ley70. A bearing is shown at 70 that cargovernor and consequently the sleeve 70.
The sleeve 70 by reason of the spreading of the flexible arms of the governor causes the pulley 7 0* to move toward the record 65, and thereby the end of the arm 7 0 is moved downwardly. At the same time the arm 7 0 and the rod 7 0 are lowered. The coaetion of'the rod 7 O? and the bent arm 70" raises the door 70 at a predetermined speed of the record 65'. The openings 68 and 72 as usual allow the light rays to fall upon the pictures on the record, and the secondary openings 69 and 73 exposed the numerals on the edge of the record to the light rays. The door 70 swings up when the crank 64- is turned at a predetermined speed.
In the side Wall 62 is supported tube 75 with an elbow 76 at one end thereof, and a second elbow 77 at the other end thereof, the axes of the elbows in the present case making angles of 90 degrees with each other. The elbow 76 has its opening 78 opposite the openings 69 and 73 of the picture machine, and a mirror 79 is located in said elbow 76 with its surface at an angle of degrees with the plane of the front wall 61. In the elbow'77 is located a mirror 80 the plane of which makes an angle 45 de ees with the tell-tale plate 81 to be described. A lens 82 is detachably fastened to the end of the elbow 77 by means of a holder 83.
To theside wall 62 and foot of the picture machine is fastened a bracket 84, the vertical member 95 of which contains the slot 96. A supporting plate 85 can be secured at difierent levels to the said vertical member 95 by means of the screws 97. aushaped journalbracket with le 86, 87 and connecting member '88 exten s from the supporting plate 85. A spindle 89 is pivoted in the legs 86, 87 and carries on its upper end the dial plate 90 with the numerals 0m 9 to correspond with the numerals on the film 65. The tell-taleplate 81 is located on the upper leg 86 of the said U-sha ed bracket and is adjacent to the circum erential edge of the dial plate 90, so that any tel ' numerals which may be reflected on' the tale plate 81 can aline with the numeral on the dial plate 90 which may be adjacent thereto. On the spindle 89 are fastened the ratchet wheel 91 with the teeth 92, and the ratchet wheel 93 with the teeth 94. A spring 98 ex tends from theconnecting member 88 of the said U-shaped bracket," and its .free end bears on the spindle 89. A spring 99 extends from the same member 88 with its free end located in'the path of, the teeth 94. Brackets 101 extend from the plate 85 and.
support a pin 102 on which latter is pivoted the U-shaped bell crank 103 with the arms 104 and 105. A spring 106 extends between the end of the arm 104 and the plate 85. A screw 107 in threaded engagement with the arm 104 can bear against a post 108 extending from the plate 85, and a screw 109 in threaded engagement with the arm 105 can bear against a post '110 also extending from the plate 85. A magnet 111 extends from the plate 85and its cores 112 are in the path of the armature 113 carried on the bell crank 103. arm 105 of the said bell crank 103 is fastened a spring pawl 118 with its hook end 119 in the path of the teeth 94 of the ratchet wheel 93. A flexible stop-pawl-120 extends from the bell crank 103 with its hook end 121 in the path of theteeth 92 of the ratchet wheel 91. and are insulated from the supporting late 85. A battery 124 has extending there rom the wires 125 and 126, the wire 125 connects with the binding post 122 and the wire 126 connects with the contact spring 56. A wire 127 connects the binding post 123 with the contact spring 57.
To use the invention the operator first turns the dial plate 90 so that the numeral on the film opposite the openings 69 and 7 3 and which is reflected on the plate 81, corresponds with the numeral on said dial plate which is in alinement therewith. He then turns the crank 64 of the icture machine and thereby the record 65 1s propelled between the front wall 61 and cover plate 71 in the paths of the openings 68 and 72 and the secondary openings 69 and 73. As the arm of the said bell crank descends, the hook end'119 of the spring mec anism turning, rotates the double pinion and gear 31, '32, which latter rotate the double pinions pawl 118 engages one of the teeth 94 of the ratchet wheel 93 and thereby turns the spindle 89 with the dial plate 90 circumferentially the distance for one of the numerals on said dial plate. The flexible stop-pawl 120 with its hook end 121 engaging with one of the teeth 92 of the ratchet wheel 91 controls the amount of the rotation of the dial plate 90. While the film 65 is traveling across the front Wall 61, the light rays that pass through the openings 69 and 73 enter the elbow 76 of the tube 75, and by means of the mirrors 79 and 80 are consecutively reflected on the plate 81 which is adjacent to the numerals on the dial plate 90.
To obtain the correct operation of the tWo machines in other words synchronizing the picture machine with the talking machine, the numerals reflected and seen by the operator on the plate 81, must correspond with the numerals alining therewith on the dial plate 90. In case they do not agree, the operator changes the speed of the picture machine by means of its crank 64 until the numerals on the said plate 81 correspond with their accompanying numerals on the said dial plate 90. a
The disk 44 being adjustable to the disk 43 at the beginning of operations the former is turned so that the pin 45 has some distance to travel before making contact with a contact spring 56, so that the dial plate 90 rotates only after a portion of the film 65 has been propelled through the picture machine.
- It will be noted that the numerals on the film and dial plate can be varied from those described, using other combination of numbers to synchronize the machines.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is:

The combination of means for enabling 'the movement of a moving picture record and that of a corresponding phonograph record to be synchronized, consisting of a visible indicator driven by the phonograph and means located adjacent the moving picture' record and constructed to reflectthe image of an indicating mark thereon-ans visible indicator.
2.v In a synchronizing apparatus the combination of means to move a picture record having index marks thereon and a talking machine, a magnet intermittently excited by the talking machine, a dial plate, connections between the latter and said magnet to intermittently rotate the dial plate and means to reflect the said index marks of said record so as to coact with the dial plate.
3. The combination in a synchronizing apparatus for a picture machine and talking machine of means in the picture machine to permit light rays-to pass through a portion of the picture record thereof having index marks, a tube with one end in the path of said light rays, mirrors in said'tube to refiect the light rays and said index marks, an intermittently rotated dial plate actuatedby the talking machine and located to coact with the reflected index marks of said records.
4. The combination in synchronizing apparatus for a picture machine and talking machine of means in the picture machine to permit lightrays to pass through a portion of the picture record thereof during the movement of said record, a tube connected to the picture machine with one end in the path of said light rays, mirrors in said tube to reflect the light rays and index marks, located on the record, a tell tale plate opposite the other end of said tube, a dial plate with its circumferential edge adjacent to the tell tale plate, a magnet intermittently excited by the talking machine and connections between the magnet and the dial plate.
5. In a-synchronizing apparatus the combination of a talking machine and a picture machine carrying, a picture record having index marks, means in the picture machine to permit light rays to pass through a portion of the record with the index marks during the movement of said record, mirrors connected to the picture machine to reflect said light rays, a' lens in the path of said rays, a tell tale plate in the path of said rays to exhibit the reflected index marks of the record, a dial plate with its circumferential edge adjacent to the tell tale plate and means actuated by the talking machine to rotate the dial plate.

The combination in a synchronizing apparatus for a picture machine having a picture record with index figures adjacent to one edge thereof and a talking machine, means in the picture machine topermit light rays to pass through the portion of the picture record having the index figures during the movement of said record, mirrors connected to the picture machine to reflect said rays, a tell tale plate in the path of said rays to exhibit the reflected index marks of the picture record, a spindle pivoted on the picture machine, -a dial plate carried by said spindle with its circumferential edge adjacent to the tell tale plate, a disk journaled on the talking machine and rotated by the pole of the magnet and the second contact spring, a ratchet wheel fastened to the spindle of the dial plate, a spring pawl extending from said bell crank in the path of the teeth of said ratchet wheel to intermittently rotate said spindle and thereby the said dial plate.
7. The combinationin asynchronizing apparatusfor a picture machine having a picture record with a series of consecutive groups of numerals, one of said numerals for each picture of the record, a dial plate on the picture machine intermittently rotated in connection with the mechanism of a talking machine and means to exhibit the numerals of said record adjacent to, said dial plate.
8. The combination in asynchronlzing apparatus for a picture machine having a picture record with index marks and a talking machine, an adjustable disk rotated by the mechanism of the talking machine, ,a mag- -net connected with the picture machine, a dial plate operated by said magnet, an electric circuit connecting the magnet and adjustable disk, means to intermittently break said-circuit and means to reflect said index marks adjacent to said dial plate.
