Be it known that I, Cnzanm ,JOLY, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new.

which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to 1mprovements in rail joints, with the object in view of providing a simple article capable therewith to prevent displacement of the rails, the keys providing a water-tight joint, and means clamping the keys in and preventing displacement thereof from the chair.
The above and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the-novel construct-ion, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and claimed.
Reference will now be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, parts being broken away to show more clearly the details of construction. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken about on the plane indicated by the line 4i of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken about on the line 55 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a rail engaging member or key used in this device.
Throughout the following detail descrip tion, and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, this device comprises the chair 1 upon which the ends of the rails 2-2 are seated, the base portion of the chair being provided with one or more vertical projections or bosses 3 with which the bases of the rails coact, said rail this invention refers.

The chair is provided at each side with a lateral wall 5 extending vertically in spaced relation to the web of the rail, these walls forming seats to receive rail engaging members hereinafter more particularly described. At the base of each wall in the inner face thereof is provided a longitudinally extending slot or groove 6 disposed substantially on a level with the upper face of the base of the rails arranged in the chair.
In each of the seats thus provided is in troduced a heavy key on rail engaging member 7 most clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing. The key 7 is of sufiicient length to extend a short distance beyond the meeting ends of the rails 2, 2 and is interposed,
- of course, between said rails and the lateral wall 5 at the respective sides of the chair 1. Upon the inner side, the key is provided with an upper shoulder 8 which engages beneath the ball portion of the rails, and a lower shoulder 9 which engages with the base of the rails, while at the opposite side each key is formed with an upper flange 10 which overhangs the chair wall 5, and a lower laterally projecting wedge flange 11 which is received in the groove 6 in this wall. It will be obvious that the overhang ing flange 10 not only prevents access of rain or foreign matter into the chair seat but by reason of its engagement wlth the chair wall the pressure on said chair due to traveling of trains over the rails is distributed between the base of the chair and its lateral wall. Owing to the substantial bearing of the ends of the rail upon the chair 7 through the instrumentality of the keys the ends of the rails are prevented from work ing upward and downward resulting in the rounding of the ends which causes the deleterious vibration or pounding action comof rail connections. It will be noted that at one end each key 7 is formed with a lateral projection or head 12 which facilitates the removal of the key from its seat in that the workman is enabled to hammer against this Patented Jul 11, ieic.

From the end of the key having the head or lateral projection 12, the flange 11 tapers in a transverse direction with respect to the key and this tapering form provides the wedging function which interlocks the key in position.
The chair 1 at substantially its central portion is enlarged transversely as at 13, said enlarged portion having a transverse passage or opening to receive clamping means for holding the key members in place in the chair. The clamping means just mentioned comprises a shank 14: which is inserted in the opening of the enlarged portion 13, said shank being upturned at one end to form a hook 15, the extremity of which passes through an opening in the side wall 5 at one side of the chair and into engagement With the key 7 at this side. To insure positive interlocking action with respect to the key, the latter is preferably provided with one-or more shallow recesses 16 to receive the extremity of the hook. The shank let is square in cross section and carries at its other end an adjustable arm 17 mounted on the square portion, this arm corresponding in shape substantially to the hook 15 and engaging the key arranged at the opposite side of the rails in the same manner as the hook cooperates with the key first mentioned. The arm 17 is adjustable by means of the nut 18 having threaded connection with the end of the shank 14. It will be apparent that the respective keys 7 are positioned in the seats of the chair by introducing them in opposite directions between the Walls 5 and the rail ends and these keys will move into their normal engaging position substantially freely though the wedge flange becomes effective just before the recesses 16 of said keys registers with the openings in the side wall through which the hook 15 and the arm 17 extend. By clamping the keys tightly in the seats in the manner hereinbefore clearly set forth, a rigid and substantial connecting means is provided for rails and without the utilization of bolts which are generally provided for fishplates or angle bars of the conventional type. The connection of rails by means of my invention may be quickly accomplished.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:
1. A rail joint device of the class described comprising a chair having a seat arranged at each side of the rails, rail engaging members disposed in said seats, means for holding said members from displacement comprising a transversely arranged clamp extending beneath the rail and having one end coacting with the rail engaging member at one side of the rails, and adj ustable means carried by its other end engaging the opposite rail engaging member.
2. A rail joint device of the class described comprising a chair having a seat arranged at each side of the rails, rail engaging members disposed in said seats, means for holding said members from displacement comprising a transversely arranged clamp interlocked With the chair and having a hooked terminal at one end engaging the rail engaging member at one side of the rails, and a clamping arm adjustably car ried by the other end for engaging the rail engaging member at the opposite side of the rails.
3. A rail joint device of the class described comprising a chair having a lateral wall forming a key receiving seat, a key disposed in said seat and engaging the rails, the chair aforesaid having a transverse opening, and a clamping member arranged in the trans verse opening and having one end upturned to interlock with the lateral wall aforesaid,
the end of said member engaging the key at the corresponding side of the rails and adjusting means on the other end of said clamping member for clamping the key against displacement from its seat.
i. A rail joint device of the class described comprising a chair, a key member arranged intermediate the chair and the rail seated therein, a wedge flange on said key interlocking with the chair for preventing dis placement of the key therefrom, and a clamping member extending transversely of the chair and cooperating with the key memberto hold it in wedging position, the chair aforesaid being formed with an enlarged portion having an opening therethrough to receive the transversed clamping member.
5. A rail joint device of the class described comprising a chair provided with lateral seats, rail engaging members disposed in said seats, interlocking means intermediate the rail engaging members and the chair for preventing vertical displacement of the engaging members, and clamping means common to said rail engaging members and arranged transversely of the chair for engagement with said members to prevent longitudinal displacement of said members from the seats aforesaid.
