Be it known that 1, PETER A. SoLnM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Planing Machinery, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to planing machinery arranged for planing wood.
It is the object of my invention to provide a planing machine having usual cutting and feeding means, with a profiler arranged for cutting the profiles, such as beads, grooves, or cross-sectional contours of different characters, in the material.
My invention is particularly applicable in high-speed planing machines, in which the material is fed through the machine at a high rate of feed and it is desirable to employ the machine with little interruption, irrespective of the character or change in character of the Work done thereby.
It is the object of my invention further, to provide means whereby the setting,
sharpening and other preparatory manip-.
ulation of the cutter-blades, and the mounting thereof on the cutter-head of the profiler, may be accomplished 01f the machine, the heads being attached as units in finished condition on the profiler cutter-head shafts.
It is the object of my invention further, to provide a planing machine with means whereby the profiler cutter-head or cutterheads are moved out of range of the material being fed through the machine, and the ends of the profiler shafts exposed so that the profiler cutter-head or cutter-heads may be removed or replaced while the material is being fed through the machine; further, to
provide a planing machine with a profiler table extending across the position of the material, so that a firm support may be provided for the material irrespective of the adjusted positions of the profiler cutter-- heads or the lateral adjustment of the profiler cutter-head supports; further, to provide novel means in a planing machine whereby the profiler bearings at the respective ends of the profiler cutter-head shaft have reinforcing releasable connection;
further, to provide a profiler cutter-head.
support, a profiler table, and an outer bearing for the profiler shaft, adjustable simultaneously or independently of each other; and, further, to provide novel adjusting res lations between the side-guides of the pro-,
filer and the tables of the profiler and main frame of the machine.

I have exemplified my invention in connection with a so-called planing and matching or flooring machine embodying the usual cutting and feeding devices, and show theprofiler as an attachment to such ma? feeding rolls 24, 25, which are located at the feeding-out end of the machine, these feeding rolls being of usual construction and rotatedin ordinary manner. I
- A cutter-head support for the profiler is movable toward and from the path of the material fed by the feeding means. I have shown this support, (see Figs. 1, 2,. 3, 8 and v 9), in the form of a stand 31 which is slldable crosswise of the main frame, as on a cross-piece 32, which has a guide. 33 thereon,

A cross-slide 62 is adjustable laterally on the slide 57, in a guideway 63 thereon, the adjustment being accomplished by an adjusting screw 64 jour- 'naled, and held against endwise movement in a bearing 65 on the slide 62, and'having threaded connection with a threaded bearing 66 on the slide 57. V j A bearing 67 for the lower profiler cutter-head shaft 68 is on the slide 62, this bearing being adjustable with said slide.

arranged to be shifted sidewise so as to present desirable portions of the material supporting face 82 thereof to the material, so that the material may have firm bearing irrespective of its width or the position crosswise of the machine at which it is fed through the machine. (See Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9.) The table is shown as having a long guideway 83 cotiperating with the guide 33 of the cross-piece 32. The table is shiftable lengthwise of this guide with and independent of the stand 31. It is ordinarily manually shifted on the guide or arranged to be pushed with the stand in the adjustment of the latter when moving the profiler cutter-heads on the stand into positions above, or in the vertical projection of, the material fed through the machine.
An end-bearing 86 is provided for the upper profiler shaft 47, and an end-bearing 87 is provided for the lower profiler shaft 68. Means are provided for removably supporting these end-bearings and for adjusting the same simultaneously with the adjustments of the cutter-head slides, and for independently positioning said end-bearings. The end-bearings are shown located at one side of the vertical projection of the material passing through the machine, while the main bearings for the profiler shafts located on the stand or support are located at the other side of said vertical projection, the support being shown as movable laterally for moving the cutter-heads on the profiler shafts into or out of said vertical projection and for moving the end journals 88, 89, on the profiler shafts 47 and 68 respectively, into and out of said end- bearings 86, 87.
A bridge 91 is provided for rigidly and releasably connecting the respective bearings 46 and 86 of the upper profiler shaft, and a bridge 92 is provided for rigidly'and releasably connecting the respective bearings 67 and 87 of the lower profiler shaft. The
bridge 91 is shown bolted to an extension 93 of the upper cutter-head slide 41. This bridge has releasable connection with the bearing 86, shown in the form of an end slot 94 in said bridge, the walls of which are received about a bolt 95 threaded into an arm 96 extending from the bearing 86, there being preferably a tongue and groove slide connection 97 between said bridge and arm. For lending additional rigidity to the structure, an upright 101 is provided, (see Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8), with which the bearing 86 has releasable and adjustable connection, this upright being-also preferably adjustable laterally crosswise of the machine. The upright is shown provided with a slot 102, through which a clamp-bolt 103 is received into threaded connection with the arm 96.
If it is desired to adjust the upper profiler shaft up or down, the clamp-bolt 103 is released, whereupon adjustment is effected, and the clamp-bolt again clamped after adjustment. If it is desired to move the main cutterhead support of the profiler laterally for exposing the ends of the profiler shafts and positioning the cutter-heads at the side of the path of material passing through the machine, or permitting removal or replacement of the cutter-heads, the clamp-bolt 95 is released for permitting the sidewise moving of the main profiler support, the endbearing 86 maintaining its clamped relation with the upright.
If it is desired to shift the end-bearing laterally, the end-bearing is adjusted laterally on its support, this support being shown as the table 81. Bolts 104, 105, are located in slots 106, 107, in the table and pass through the feet 108 of the upright, being clamped in place by clamp- nuts 109, 110.
A hold-down plate 111 is mounted on and adjustable with and independently of the upper profiler slide 41. (See Figs. 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8.) It is guided thereon by a tongue and groove connection 112, and adjusted thereon by an adjusting-screw 113 journaled in and held against endwise movement in a bearing 114 on said plate and having threaded connection in a threaded bearing 115 on said slide. The plate is clamped to said slide by a clamp-bolt 116 received through a slot 117 in said slide'into threaded connection with said plate. The hold-down plate has a hold-down arm 118 extending crosswise of the machine and is arranged to support one or more hold-down shoes 119. The hold-down arm and shoes are movable laterally with the stand 31. These shoes are shown as reversable shoes, (see Fig. 5), and adjustable up and down on guide-pieces 120 by means of adjusting-screws 121, the guidepieces and shoes being arranged to be clamped at suitable positions lengthwise of the hold-down arm by T-bolts 122, received in a T-slot 123 and clamped in place by clamp-nuts 124.
A chip-breaker 125 is adjustable toward and from the cutter-head on the hold-down plate, shown accomplished by a tongue and groove connection 128 and clamp-bolts 129 received through slots 130 in the chipbreaker into threaded connection with said plate. An adjustable limiting screw 131 on the chip-breaker is arranged to be received against the hold-down plate for limiting the clamp-bolt 138 passing through a slot 139 in said bearing and having threaded connection with the bearing-block. The bearingblock is provided with a slot 140, a clampbolt 141 passing through said slot and having threaded connection with the profiler table-frame. The slot 140 is shown as an end slot opening inwardly for permitting ready outward removal of the bearing-block with its bearing.
The bridge 92 has releasable connection with the bearing 87, shown as an end slot 142 in said bridge and a clamp-bolt 143 in said slot having threaded connection with the bearing, a tongue and groove guiding connection 144 being between said bridge and bearing. The bearing-block is movable laterally on a guide 145 formed 146 of the table frame, the guide being provided with threaded holes 147 into any selective one of which the clamp-bolt 141 is arranged to be received.
The bridge 92 is shown in the form of a shaving-hood 148 for the lower profiler head, having a shaving opening 149 therethrough.
Lower supports 151 are provided for the material after passing the profiler heads. (See Figs. 1, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9.) One or more of these supports may be provided. They are shown adjustably positioned laterally on a cross-guide 152 by T-bolts 153 seleetively placed lengthwise of a T-slot 154 in said guide, and clamp-nuts 155. The guide is adjustable up and down on the bridge 92 by means of an adjusting-screw 156 and clamped in adjusted positions by clampbolts 157, passing through slots 158 in said cross-guide and into threaded connection with the bridge 92.
Side- guides 161, 162, are provided, which are adjustable crosswise of the profiler and are arranged to form a channel therebetween through which the material is fed. The profiler side-guide 161 extends to rear of the main side-guide 160. In order to avoid the unequal wearing' away of portions of the profiler table and'chip-ibreaker, means are provided for adjusting the side-guides to different positions crosswise of the profiler table, and
means are'further provided for adjusting the table crosswise of the vertical projectionof the material passing through the machine, so that the material may be caused ,to contact selective points crosswise of said terial by means relieving the main cutterheads'of these duties, and thereby enhanc ing the capacity and speed of the machine, and providing smoother work, enabling a greater number of cutter-heads to act upon the material, and enabling the material to ary part of the machine.

are in these slots and pass through apertures in the forward ends of the guide 161, nuts 166 clamping the guide to the station- Bolts 167, 168, are received in the slots 106, 107, in the profiler table, clamp-nuts 169, 170, clamping the guide 161 in place on said profiler table.
Bolts 171 are recei ed in the slots 163, and pass through holes in the side-guide 162, clamp-nuts 172, clamping the sideguide 162 to the stationary, part of the machine. Bolts 173, 174, are received in the slots 106, 107, in the profiler table, clampnuts 175, 176, clamping the side-guide 162 to the profiler table.
In operation, in adjusting the profiler for a given class of work, the clamp-nuts 169,'
170, securing the side-guide 161 to the profiler table, and the clamp-nuts 172 securing the side-guide 162 to the main table, are loosened, it being assumed that the right hand guide 16 is in proper lateral position- The board having its edges finished by the main cutter-heads is placed against the right hand side-guide 161. The table is next moved laterally under the side-guide 161, carrying the side-guide 162 with it until the latter contacts the left hand edge of the board properly, whereby a channel of proper width is formed between the sideguides through which the material is arranged to pass. The clamp- nuts 169, 170, and 172,- are again clamped for rigidly loeating the parts in adjusted positions.
The profiler table extending across a considerable distance of the width of the machine forms a table of considerable area and firm structure, so that the blows of the upper cutter-head of the profiler which usually performs the greater service, are directed against a firm support, whereby chattering of the profiler may be sharpened or other attention given thereto when off the machine, and whereby profiler heads of differ ent characters may be readily and quickly placed on the machines. It further provides means whereby the support and shafts of the profiler may be moved to the side of the path of the material through the machine, so as to remove the profiler cutter-heads out of range of such path, when it is not desired to use the same on the material being fed through the machine, during which time heads of suitable kinds for the next job may be placed on the profiler shafts. It further provides means whereby the profiler heads may be located adjacent to the main bearings of their shafts on the profiler stand, when operating on narrow material, and the stand shifted into positions in line with the feed-rolls and main upper and lower cutterheads of the machine, whereby the blows of the profiler-heads will be directed mainly against said main bearings.
The profiler-shafts are arranged to be driven,. shown accomplished by means of pulleys 177, 178.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A planing machine comprising usual cutter-head and feeding devices, a profiler cutter-head support, a profiler cutter-head thereon, and a table under the latter, said profiler cutter-head support movable for moving said profiler cutter-head into and out of the vertical projection of material passing through the machine, and said table movable laterally crosswise of said vertical projection. i
2. A planing machine comprising usual cutter-head and feeding devices, a profiler cutter-head support, a profiler cutter-head thereon, and a table under the latter, said profiler cutter-head support movable for moving said profiler cutter-head into and out of the vertical projection of material passing through the machine, and said table movable laterally crosswise of said vertical projection with and independently of said profiler cutter-head support.
3. In a planing machine, the combination with a cutter-head, a feeding device and a main table, of a profiler cutter-head, a profiler table thereunder, means for sidewise shifting of said profiler table, a pair of sideguides, releasable connecting means between each of said side-guides and each of said tables, and constructed and arranged for rigid connection of either of said side-guides to either of said tables upon sidewise shifting of said profiler table.
4. In a planing machine, the combination with a cutter-head and a feeding device, of a profiler cutter-head support, a profiler table under the cutter-head on said support,
and parallel guiding means for guiding said support and said profiler table laterally, said support and profiler table movable independently.
5. In a planing machine, the combination with a cutter-head and a feeding device for the material, of a profiler at the feeding-out end of the machine comprising a profiler cutter-head support, a profiler cutter-head shaft supported thereby, a profiler cutterhead on said shaft, a bearing for one end of said profiler cutter-head shaft on said support, a bearing for the other end of said shaft, positioning means for the latter, and means for lateral shifting of said support for withdrawing said shaft from said lastnamed bearing and locating said profiler cutterhead at the side of the vertical pro jection of the path of material fed by said feeding device.
6. In a planing machine, the combination with a cutter-head and a feeding device for the material, of a profiler at the feeding-out end of the machine comprising a profiler cutter-head support, a profiler cutter-head shaft supported thereby, a profiler cutter-head on said shaft, a bearing for one end of said profiler cutter-head shaft on said support, a bearing for the other end of said shaft, positioning means for the latter, means for lateral shifting of said support for withdrawing said shaft from said last-named bearing and locating said profiler cutter-head at the side of the vertical projection of the path of material fed by said feeding device, and a connecting bridge between said bearings.
7. In a planing machine, the combination with a cutter-head and a feeding device for the material, of a profiler at the feeding out end of the machine comprising a profiler cutter-head support, upper and lower profiler cutter-head shafts mounted thereon, upper and lower profiler cutter-heads on said shafts, and means for lateral movement of said support for moving said upper and lower profiler cutter-heads into and out of the vertical projection of the material fed by said feeding device.
8. In a planing machine, the combination with a cutter-head and a feeding device for the material, of a profiler at the feeding-out end of the machine comprising a profiler cutter-head support, upper and lower profiler cutter-head shafts mounted thereon, upper and lower profiler cutterheads on said shafts, means for lateral movement of said support for moving said upper and lower profiler cutter-heads into and out of the vertical projection of the material fed by said feeding device, and means for independently shifting one of said profiler cutter-head shafts endwise.
9. In a planing machine, the combination with a usual cutter-head and a feeding means for the material, of a profiler at the feeding-out end of the machine comprising a support, upper and lower profiler cutter-head slides mounted thereon, profiler cutter-heads on said slides, means for independently adjusting said slides up and down, means for causing relative lateral shifting between said slides, and means for moving said support laterally whereby said profiler cutter-heads are moved into or out of the vertical projection of said material fed by said feeding means.
10. In a planing machine, the combination with a usual cutter-head and a feeding means for the material, of a profiler at the feeding-out end of the machine comprising a support at one side of the path of the material, upper and lower cutter-head slides mounted on said support, upper and lower cutter-head shafts journaled on said slides, profiler cutter-heads on said shafts, an endbearing support for said shafts at the other side of said path of said material, endbearings for said shafts thereon, and means for moving said support laterally for moving said profiler cuttter-heads into and out of the vertical projection of said material fed by said feeding means and for moving the ends of said shafts into and out of said end-bearings.
11. In a planing machine, the combination with a usual cutter-head and feeding means for the material, of a profiler at the feeding-out end of the machine comprising upper and lower profiler cutter-head bearings at one side of the path of said material profiler cutter-head shafts journaled in said bearings, profiler cutter-heads on said shafts,
side of said path of said material, and means forrmoving said first-named bearings laterally for moving said profiler cutter-heads into and out of the vertical projection of feeding-out end of the machine comprising" upper and lower profiler cutter-head bearings at one side of the path of said material, profiler cutter-head shafts journaled in said bearings, profiler cutter-heads on said shafts, and bearings for said shafts at the other side of said path of said material, means for moving said first-named bearings laterally for moving said profiler cutter-heads into and out of the vertical projection of the material fed by said feeding means and the ends of said shafts into and out of said end-bearings, and a laterally movable profiler table in which said endbearings are mounted.
13. In a planing machine,.the combination with a usual cutter-head and a feeding means for the material, of a profiler at the feeding-out end of the machine comprising a support, upper and lower profiler cutterhead slides mounted thereon, profiler cutter-heads on said slides, means for independently adjusting said slides up and down, a profiler table between said cutter 7 heads, means for causing relative lateral shifting between said slides, means for lateral shifting of said table for moving selective parts of said table into the vertical projection of the material fed bysaid feeding means, and means for moving said support laterally whereby said profiler cutter-heads are moved into and out of the vertical projection of said material fed by said feeding means.
14. In a planing machine, the combination with a usual cutter-head and feeding means for the material, of a profiler at the feeding-out end of the machine comprising a profiler cutter-head support, upper and lower bearing slides adjustable thereon, profiler cutter-head shafts journaled in said bearings, profiler cutter-heads on said shafts, end-bearings for said shafts, and means for moving said support laterally for moving said profiler cutter-heads into and out of the vertical projection of the material fed by said feeding means and the ends of shafts into and out of said end-bearings.

16. In a planing machine, the combination with the usual cutter-head and feeding means for the material, of a profiler at the feeding-out end of the machine comprising a profiler cutter-head support, upper and lower bearing slides adjustable thereon, bearings thereon, profiler cutter-head shafts journaled in said bearings, profiler cutterheads on said shafts, an end-bearing for each of said shafts, supporting means for said end-bearings,releasable securing means between each of said end-bearings and its supporting means, means for simultaneously adjusting said bearings of each of said shafts, releasable connecting means between said bearings of each of said shafts, and means for adjusting said support laterally for separating said bearings and thereby moving said profiler cutter-heads out of the vertical projection of the material fed by said feeding means and withdrawing the ends of said shafts from said end-bearings.
17. In a planing machine, the combination with the usual cutter-head and feeding means for the material, of a profiler at the feeding-out end of the machine comprising a profiler cutter-head support, upper and lower bearing slides adjustable thereon, bearings on said slides, profiler cutter-head shafts journaled in, said bearings, profiler cutter-heads on said shafts, a laterally adjustable profiler table, end-bearings on said table for the ends of said shafts, and means for adjusting said support laterally for moving said profiler cutter-heads out of the vertical projection of the material fed by said feeding means and said ends of said shafts out of said end-bearings for removal of said profiler cutter-heads during continuance of feeding of said material.
18. In a planing machine, the combination with the usual cutter-head and feeding means for the material, of a profiler at the feeding-out end of the machine comprising a cutter-head stand at one side of the path of said material, a bearing slide, a bearing on said slide, a profiler cutter-head shaft journaled in said bearing, a profiler cutterhead on said shaft, a profiler table adjustable laterally under said profiler cutter-head, an upright on said table at the other side of said path of the material, said upright adjustable laterally on said table, an endbearing for the end of said profiler shaft, releasable securing means between said endbearing and said upright, releasable connecting means between said bearings, means for adjusting said bearing slide up and down on said stand, and means for laterally adjusting said stand laterally moving said profiler cutter-head into and out of Vertical projection of the material fed by said feeding means and moving the end of said profiler shaft into and out of said end-bearing.
19. In a planing machine, the combination with the usual cutter-head and feeding means for the material, of a profiler at the feedin -out end of the machine comprising a cutter-head support at one side of the path of the material fed by said feeding means, a bearing thereon, a profiler cutterhead shaft journaled in said bearing, a profiler cutter-head thereon, an end-bearing at the other side of said path of feed for the end of said shaft, a shaving-hood for said cutter-head secured to said support and having releasable connection with said end bearing, and means for moving said support for moving said profiler cutter-head and shaving-hood into and out of the vertical projection of the material fed by said feedmg means.
20. In a planing machine, the combination with a cutter-head, a feeding device, and a main table, of a profiler comprising a profiler table movable laterally With relation to said main table, a support, a bearing thereon, a profiler cutter-head shaft journaled in said bearing, a bearing on said profiler table for the end of said shaft, and means for adjusting said support and said bearing and shaft thereon laterally toward and from said profiler table and said bearing thereon, for the purpose described.
