Description
W. R. SMITH.
CLOD CB USHER AND PULVERIZER.
APPLICAT'IOQ FILED FEB. 21. 1916.
WALTER, RAMSEY SMITH, 0F FORREST CITY,
C1401) CE'USHER AND PULVERIZER.
iaoeoi.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVAL'rnn RAMssY SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forrest City, in the county of St. Francis and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clod Crushers and Pulverizers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clod crushers and pulverizers; the object being to provide a crushing roll formed of a series of wheels having pyramidal teeth for breaking up-the clods; these teeth being arranged in staggered relation in respect to one another on the complete crushing roll in order to form spirally arranged rows of teeth which act upon the clods in such a manner as to thoroughly crush the same.
Another object of my invention is to provide a crusher and pulverizer in which the wheels constituting the crushing roll are secured together by bars so as to cause the wheels to rotate in unison.
Another object of my invention is to provide a clod crusher and pulverizer in which a crushing roll is employed and a harrow, so that the clods after being crushed and broken up by the crushing roll, will be pulverized by the harrow.
Another object of my invention is to provide a clod crusher and pulverizer which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction; the wheels constituting the crushing roll being formed identical, but being secured together in staggered arrangement so as to form the complete crushing roll with spirally arranged teeth.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
' In the drawmg-Figure 1, is a side elevation of my improved construction of clod crusher and pulverizer; Fig. 2, is a section taken on the line 2 is a detail plan view of a portion of the complete crushing roll showing the manner of arranging the independent wheels to produce a crushing roll with spirally arranged teeth.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In carrying out my invention, I emplo a frame l which is provided with depending Specification of Letters Patent.
2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3,
converging arms 2 terminating in split bearv Patented July 11,- 191%., Application filed February 21, 1916. 'serialno. 'faesa ings 3 which is arranged an axle d secured in position therein by a washer and cotter pin 5. The frame 1 is provided with a :t'ongue socket 6 in which a tongue 7 is mounted carrying the ordinary form of double-tree 8 to which the draft-ani1nals can be connected in the ordinary manner. Mounted on the frame 1 is a box 9 in which is adapted to be placed, stones or any other Connected to the de pending arms 2 are the arms of a springsuitable weights.
seat support 10 carrying a seat 11.
Mounted on each end of the axle 3 is a draft bar 12 connected to a barrow 1,? by
links 14, said harrow being arranged under the seat 11 and the particular construction of harrow forms no part of this invention. Arranged on the axle 3 between the dependmg converging arms 2 of the frame 1 is a crushing roll formed of a series of wheels 15, the tread of each wheel being provided with pyramidal-shaped teeth 16, each tooth having a base substantially diamond shaped,
the point of each tooth extending laterally beyond the tread of the wheel as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The wheels 15 are arranged on the axle 3 so that the projecting points of the teeth extend into the space between the spaced teeth of, the adjacent wheel and it will be seen that when the series of wheels is assembled on the axle, as shown in Figs. 2 arfd. 3, the edges of the base of the teeth are parallel with one another so that the teeth extend around the circumference of the complete crushing roll in a spiral manner in both directions. The wheels 15. are each formed exactly alike, the tread of each wheel having spaced teeth arranged 'thereon arid in assembling these wheels on the axle, they are arranged as shown in Fig.
3, which brings the'spokes of the wheels into alinement. The spokes of thewheels are adapted to be connected by a bar 17 extending through the series of wheels having clips '18 and it will be noticed that I have employed two bars, as when the wheels are v arranged so as to bring the diamond-shaped teeth of every other wheel in longitudinal alinement, the spokes of every other wheel pyramids'break and thoroughly crush the "same. g i
up the elods.
Frorn the'foregoing description, it will be i seen that I have provided a novel form of crushing roll for a clod crusher and pulverizer which is formed of a' series of wheels each wheel having a series of teeth on the tread thereof, which when arranged upon a common axis and united. to rotate in unison, form a crushing roll with spirally arranged teeth I claim: v 1. A clod crusher and pulverizer having a crushing roll formed of a series ofwheels,
eaeh'wheel being provided with pyramidal teeth of a. greater width than the tread of the wheel adapted to rest on the tread of the adj aeent wheels.
. 2. 7Aclod crusher and pulverizer comprising an axle, a series of Wheels mounted on said axle, each wheel being provided with a series of pyramidal teeth having overhanging portions, and meansfor connecting said wheels together with'the overhanging portions of the teeth resting on the'treadofthe adjacent wheels. y
3. A clod crusher and pulverizer comprising an axle, a series of wheels arranged upon said axle, said w eels being providedwith overhanging pyramidal teeth, the base of each tooth being substantially diamond} shaped, and means for locking said wheels together, with the teeth of the adjacent lwheels out'of alinement, with the edges of the teeth arranged in spiral manner. 1. In a clod crusher and pulverizer, the
so as to thoroughly break combination with an axle, of a series of said teeth arranged in spiral manner with the overhanging portionso'l: said teeth resting on the tread of the adjacent wheels 5. A clod crusher and pulverizcr, having a crushing roll formed of a series 01. wheels, each wheel having pyramidal teeth provided with overhanging portions resting on the tread of the adjacent wheels, and means for locking said wheels together with the teeth of said wheels arranged in staggered relation.
6. A clod crusher and pulverizer, comprising an axle, a series of wheels mounted upon said axle, each wheel being provided with a series of pyramidal teeth having overhang ing portions, said wheels being arranged upon said axle with the teeth thereof overlapping the adjacent wheels, and bars extending through the spokes of said wheels having clips forsecuring said bars to said spokes. 4
I 7. A clod crusher, having a crushing roll formed of a series of wheels mounted upon can axle, means for securing said wheels together, and pyramidal teeth formed on the tread of said wheels having overhanging portions arranged over the tread of the adjacent wheel. In testimony whereof I hereunto allix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
