To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, DIEDRICH I. FEHR, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Haskett, in the Province of Manitoba, in
Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricating Devices7 of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lubricating devices and particularly to means connected to the pitman of an engine for automatically oiling the same at each revolution thereof.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following speciication, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my lubrieating mechanism applied to the pitman of an engine. Fig. 2 is a similar view with some of the parts in an altered position. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4`4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 6 is a section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a section taken on line 7-7 of Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a section taken on line 3-8 of F ig. 5.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
he reference numeral 1 designates the base, 2 the connecting rod, 3 the wrist pin and 4 the crank shaft of an engine, in this case a horizontal engine. A yoke 5 is secured at one end to the base l and at the opposite end to a bearing 6 which is secured to the base 1 and in said bearing the crank shaft rotates. To the yoke 5 a stationary shaft 7 is secured by the nut 8 and upon said shaft an oil cup 9 is secured and about the same a sleeve ratchet 10 is disposed, the teeth of which are adapted for engagement with a pawl 12 pivotally carried by an arm 13 that is pivoted at 14; to the voke 5 and which arm further carries a disk 15. Referring again to the shaft 7 the same is provided with a disk 16 and with a bolt 17 which extends through said disk and is formed with a shoulder 18 upon which another disk 19 is disposed that abuts the disk 16 and that is threaded into engagement with a casting 2O which is fo-rmed with a `extends through a slotted .ing 20. The plunger 27 plurality of apertures 21 and which is also threaded into engagement with the oil cup Y Upon the forward or free end of the casting 2O a connecting ring 22 is disposed that connects said casting to the head of the oil cup which head rotates independently of said casting 2O and is separated therefrom by the packing ring 24. lThe bolt 17 beyond the disk 19 is enlarged as at 25 and upon this portion the integral shank 2G of a plunger 27 is slidably secured by a pin 28 which portion 28 of said shank into the said bolt.
A spring 29 is interposed between the plunger 27 and the disk 19 within the castis formed with two oppositely disposed teeth 30 which are adapted for engagement with the interior ratchet 21 formed upon the casting 2O whereby a longitudinal movement is i1nparted to said plunger as said casting rotates, this longitudinal movement in a reverse direction being imparted to said plunger by the spring 29 after disengagement of the ratchet 31 with teeth 30. The head 23 of the oil cup communicates withthe casting 20 through the medium of a port 32 and said head 23 is connected by a tube 33 with the piston rod wrist pin bearing whereby the same is lubricated in the manner to be hereinafter described.
To the tube 33 an arm 341 is secured which carries a disk 35 in frictional engagement with the disk 15. The arm 13 of disk 15 is limited in its movement by means of a stop pin 36 carried by the yoke 5 and a bracket 37 also secured to said yoke and encircling the aforesaid pawl 12 is provided with a spring 38 in frictional engagement with said pawl to retain the same in normal position.
The oil cup 9 .is filled with oil. As the pitman 2 operates it alternately raises and lowers the disk 35 by means of the arm- 34: which is connected to the tube 33 that rotates the head 23. As the disk 35 is moved into position illustrated in Fig. 2 itraises the disk 15 and depresses the pawl 12 which turns the ratchet 10 the depth of one tooth thereby causing the casting 20 to thrust the plunger longitudinally in one direction, through the medium of the teeth 30, a distance suiicient to uncover the apertures 21 in the said casting through which oil 'is admitted to the head 23 and from the same through the tube 33 to the wrist pin bearing. After each movement just described the spring 29 returns the plunger cutting off the oil supply from the cup andthe complete operation is repeated with each revolution of the wrist pin bearing.
What is claimed is l.- In a lubricating device, the combinationV of a pitman having a wrist pin bearing, a
Y rotary oil cup, a stationary shaft, supporting associated with said oil cup and plunger whereby rotary motion of the former 1s transmitted to the latter in the form of reciprocating motion, power transmission mechanism connecting said Apitrnan and oil cup, a head for said oil cup communicating with said plunger and a tube connecting said head and the said wrist pin bearing in said pitman.
2. In a lubricating device, the combination of a pitman having a wrist pin bearing, a rotary oil cup, a stationary shaft supporting said voil cup, an apertured casting within said oil cup and threaded into engagement therewith, a bolt carried by said stationary shaft and projected into said casting, a plunger carried upon said bolt within said casting and adapted to alternately cover and uncover the apertures i in said casting, a ratchet formedin said casting, teeth formed in said plunger and adapted for engagement with said ratchet whereby rotary movement of said casting is transmitted to said plunger'in the form of straight translation, a return spring for said plunger, power trans- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the to alternately cover andV eating with said plunger,
mission mechanism connecting said oil cup and pitman, a head for said oil cup communicating with said plunger and a tube connecting said head and the said wrist pin bearing in said pitman.
3. In a lubricating device, the combination of a pitman having a wrist pin bearing, a rotary oil cup, a stationary shaft supporting said oil cup, an apertured casting within sai-d oil cup and threaded into engagement therewith, a bolt carried by said stationary shaft and projected into said casting, a plunger carried upon said bolt within said casting and adapted to alternately cover and uncover the apertures in said casting, a ratchet formed in said casting, teeth formed in said plunger and adapted for engagement with said ratchet whereby rotary movement of said casting is transmitted to said plunger in the form of straight translation, a return spring for said plunger, a ratchet encircling said oil cup, a pawl in engagement with said ratchet, a head for said oil cup communia tube connecting said head and the said wrist pin bearing of said pitman and connection between said tube and the said pawl whereby rotary movement of the former will operate to depress the latter and cause it to move its ratchet a distance equal to the depth of one tooth.
