Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July :i 1l .'irsiln.
Application filed .i'uly 27, 1915. Serial No. 422,199.
To alt whom it may cameras: 1
Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. lli'r'rnn canons, a citizen of the United States, re siding at Kettle River, in the county oi Carlton and State of Minnesota, have in-' vented certain new and useful lmpro'wimerits in Battery-Boxes, of which the itch lowing is a specfiication.
My invention relates to a container for a battery of cells, and more particularly to a simple, cheap, and eflective connecting means associated therewith.
The primary ob ect of my invention 15 to provide a container for a battery of cells having an improved connecting circuit terminal carried by the cover of said container, whereby to automatically connect the cells contained therein.
With the above and other objects in view my invention resides preferably in the construction, combination, and arrangement of.
parts as hereinafter set forth in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical sectional view taken through the longitudinal axis of the container. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view of my invention. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view of a portion of-the container showing thev circuit terminals associated therewith.
Similar reference charactersindicate simi lar parts throughout the various views of the drawings.
In the drawings, whereinthe preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated, 1 provide a container 1 of any suitable material having an insulating and water proof' lining 2 into which is receivable a plurality of cells forming an electric battery and designated 3. l
The battery connecting means is carried by a cover 4 hinged at 5 and having a hasp lock at 6. The cover 4 is provided with a plurality of vertical openings 7 in which are disposed insulating bushings 8 which are adapted to receive the circuit terminals 9 of the cells 3. The connecting elements include a plurality of blocks 10 vertically slidable in said bushings 8 and having the terminals 11 of suitable electrical conductors 153 connected thereto. A supplemental cover is provided and is designated13, said sup plemental cover being hinged at l4.- and having a lock as at 15. under surface of the cover 131s recessed as indicated at it to receive a conductor carrying block l? of insulating material and a protecti plate 18. The block l'i'is grooved as indicated. 18 to receive the conductors l2. As shown to advantage in Fig. 2, the cells are connected in series, but it will be understood that any desired arrangement of conductors l2may be had in order to vary the manner of connecting said cells. In order to maintain an even and positive contact between the blocks 10 and the binding posts 9 coil springs 20 are interposed between the blocks 17 and the blocks 10. Suitable retainini v screws 21 pass through said plate 18 and the block 17 into the cover for retention of said block and plate thereon. lhe ter" minals of the connecting means are'designated 2-2 and are disposed through cpenings 23 provided in the plate 18. Needless to say, the conductors 12 are of flexible wire or the like so as to allow of ample niovernent of the blocks 10 to accommodate dillerent sizes oft binding posts.
It will be noted that the construction of this battery container permits the quick and sure connection of av plurality of cells, the
same being as readily adapted for connectand access gained to the conductor carrying 1 plate 17 and the protecting plate 18.
From the above description taken in con nection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention may be readily had and it is desired that it be understood that, while i have shown and described the same as embodying a peculiar construction, it do not desire to be limited to said construction other than by the import of the claims appended. l
What is claimed is:
1. A battery container, including a receptacle, a cover therefor having a plurality of recesses, circuit terminals in said recesses, battery terminals receivable in said recesses, conductors associated therewith, a supplemental cover, said circuit terminals being complemental to the battery terminals of the cells to automatically connect the same when the cover is closed.-
2, A connector for a battery of cells, inclrrding a container, a cover therefor, said cover having a plurality of apertures, circuit terminals insaid apertures, conductors associated therewith, battery terminals receivable in said apertures, a: supplemental cover, and protecting means associated therewith, said circuit terminals being complemental to the binding posts of the cells Goples of this patent may be obtained flor to automatically connect the same when the cover is closed.
3. A battery container, including a receptacle, a receptacle for reception-of a battery of cells, a cover therefor, said cover having a plurality of apertures, yieldable circuit terminals in said apertures, battery terminals-receivable 1n said apertures, conductors associated therewith, a supplemental cover, and insulating and protecting means asso ciated with said first mentioned cover, :18 and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
