srArEs rArErn YorrIen,
ELMER S. SH IMER, OF MILTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO SAMUEL J. SHIMER &
son's, or MILTON, PENNSYLVANIA, A
.no'rAnY cnr'rnIaHEAn.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ELMER S. SHIMER, a
- citizen of. the United- States, residing at lwilton, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new 'andj-useful Improvements in- Rotary Cutter-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in rotary cutter-heads forv wood-working machines, and the present invention is more especially designed forjointing the edge of the plank, it being an improvement on the construction disclosed'in Letters Patent No. 874,871, granted to me on December 24, 1907, the presentv invention, however, differing fromthe patented construction in. the structioni s provided with a ture of the knife or bit-holder, which in the present instance is in two parts instead of one, the-lower edges of whichoverlap or interlock at the inner end of the recess or,
seat in the head, which and in the interlocking contiguous faces of the one section of the. bit-holder.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is an end view of the cutter-head; Fig. 2 one of the bits or cutters the bit-holder .fits; corrugations in the 4; are views of the twosections of the bitholder.
The cutter-head 1 is provided with several recesses 2, 2, three being shown in the present instance, although there might obviously be even more or less.- These grooves preferably have parallel walls and are deepened at one portion, as at 3, and this deepened portransverse channel or groove 4. v r A The bit or cutter 5 is provided on one face with corrugations 6, which fitv and interlock with corresponding corrugations 7 on the section '8 ofthe bit-holder, which latter has a longitudinal rib 9'which fits the channel 4 to gage the position of section 8 of the bitholder and hold it in'place.' The other secinner end of section 8 bit andcutter' and CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA,
recess 3,. and reach-under and engage the not only fitting the recess 3 but embracing of the bit-holder, it i I 1",
v Patented July 4;, 1916. Application filed July 27,1915. Serial No. 42,184. A I y f tion 10 of the bit-holder is L shaped to fit the shown clearly in Fig. 1. The screws of the i bolt 11 fit, corresponding threads in section 10, and when its head is screwed back against the solid rear wall of recess 2,it-he parts are stood."
one of the corrugations, the sections 8 and rigidly clamped in place, as is'well under 10 of the bit-holder beingseparated for the purpose, after which they are put together with the inner ends of the two sections 8 l and 10 interlocking with each other, as
shown in Fig. 1, after which the bolts (two of which are usually employed) are screwed or thrown back against the rear wall of the 1 recess 2, and the bit or knife and its holder .are held firmly in place.
I claim: The combination of a cutter head having a recessed a bit, a bit holder,
bit between them, one
periphery,- the recess having a transverse groove on one sidewall thereof,
section having a longitudinal rib on one side adapted to fitthe groove in the wall of the recess and one end of the other section of the bit holder substantially filling the space between the inner end of the recess and the "inner end of the other section and a screw which. turns in a threaded hole in one section and is adapted to be backed up against a wall of the recess, whereby the cutter is rigidly held by the parts of the bit holder and the walls of the recess. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in thepresence of two witnesses. ELMER S SHIMER. Witnesses: I SAMUEL J.-SH1ME'R,
